Bass puts up 23 as Lindenwood downs Morehead State 73-65 in Ohio Valley Conference Tournament

EVANSVILLE, Ind. (AP) — Reggie Bass had 23 points and No. 6 seed Lindenwood beat No. 7 seed Morehead State 73-65 on Wednesday night in a first-round game of the Ohio Valley Conference Tournament.
Lindenwood (16-16) will move on to face No. 3 seed Tennessee State in a Thursday quarterfinal.
Bass added four steals for the Lions. Anias Futrell scored 15 points and grabbed 13 rebounds. Markeith Browning II added 14 points.
Kenny White Jr. led the way for the Eagles (15-17) with 12 points and seven rebounds. Tyler Brelsford added 10 points for Morehead State. Steven Clay had nine points. The loss is the ninth straight for the Eagles.
Browning scored eight points in the first half and Lindenwood went into the break trailing 30-21. Bass' 16-point second half helped Lindenwood close out the eight-point victory.

Associated Press BELMONT, Mich. (AP) — Lexi Thompson was back in contention going into the weekend in her beloved Meijer LPGA Classic, a year after a playoff loss at Blythefield County Club. Making her sixth start of the season in a part-time tour schedule, Thompson birdied three of the last four holes in breezy afternoon conditions for a 3-under 69 and a 7-under total. The 2015 winner at Blythefield was a stroke behind leaders Karis Davidson, Carlota Ciganda, Hye-Jin Choi and Celine Boutier. 'The golf course is one thing. It's always in great shape for us, which we always look forward to," Thompson said after the bogey-free round on the tree-lined layout. "But the amount of support that the tournament gets and also how Meijer gives back to the community as well. It's not just a tournament. It's much bigger than that.' The 30-year-old from Florida won the last of her 11 LPGA Tour titles in 2019. 'Some days are harder than others and we get frustrated, but at the end of the day it is just golf,' said Thompson, also set to play next week in the major KPMG Women's PGA Championship in Texas. Davidson, playing in the second-to-last group off the first tee, birdied the par-4 16th and par-5 18th for a 70. 'We just really hung in there today,' Davidson said. 'Was a bit of a grind, and nice to get the couple birdies at the end.' Ciganda and Choi each shot 67, and Boutier had a 68, all playing the morning session. "Coming here the week before a major obviously gives you confidence for playing next week," Ciganda said. 'The course is one that I like. I enjoy coming here, and it's always fun playing in Grand Rapids.' Thompson was joined at 7 under by Nanna Koerstz Madsen (68), Amanda Doherty (69), Bronte Law (69), Minjee Lee (70) and Sofia Garcia (71). Grace Kim, also part of the playoff last year that Lilia Vu won, was 6 under after a 73. She bogeyed two of her last three holes to fall out of a tie for the lead. Mi Hyang Lee, the first-round leader after a 64, had a 75 to drop to 5 under. With the major days away at PGA Frisco, only three of the top 10 in the world are at Blythefield. Pacers coach Rick Carlisle using finals platform to bring awareness to food insecurity in Indiana
Associated Press INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — At the NBA Finals, Indiana coach Rick Carlisle is trying to shine a light on what he considers an important cause. Carlisle often has been seen wearing a QR code on his shirt — one that directs interested scanners to a site for his Drive & Dish initiative, something he founded about two years ago to raise money for battling food insecurity across Indiana. So far, the program has raised more than $1 million. Carlisle and the Pacers have also made donations to the charity, which served more than 1,000 households and distributed more than 250,000 pounds of food in in its first year. 'Each year we've been able to help more people,' Carlisle said Friday night before Game 4 of the finals between the Pacers and the Oklahoma City Thunder. 'People in Indiana should never have to deal with food insecurity. There's plenty of food in Indiana. The challenge is logistics. So, this charity helps with logistics.' The program has partnered with Spokenote, which provides the technology behind the scannable code. The Pacers and Spokenote also collaborated last year on the first scannable code on a jersey in the four U.S. major pro sports leagues. Another partner is the Gleaners food bank, which works with Drive & Dish in providing fresh food, produce, eggs and more to families who need help. Carlisle said when the program started, about 1 million people in the state were considered food insecure — or in other words, unsure where their next meal was coming from. The Pacers plan to help the program grow as needed across the state over the next decade. 'It's been a great effort,' Carlisle said. 'I've got some really great people that are supporting it. Mexico's president calls for no ICE raids during Mexico-Dominican Republic soccer match
Associated Press MEXICO CITY (AP) — Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum urged U.S. officials on Friday not to target individuals attending a Gold Cup soccer match in Los Angeles between the Mexican national team and the Dominican Republic. Dozens of workers have been detained by federal immigration authorities in a series of raids in LA's fashion district and at Home Depot parking lots in Southern California. More than 100 people have been detained. 'We don't believe that there will be any raids if there's a soccer game,' Sheinbaum said in a news conference. 'We hope there won't be any. We call for no action from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement.' Mexico is scheduled to play the Dominican Republic on Saturday night at SoFi Stadium in Inglewood, California, in a group stage match of the Gold Cup. Usually, the Mexican national team matches attract thousands of fans whenever they play in Southern California. Their last match there was in March, when more than 50,000 fans attended a League of Nations semifinal against Canada. In the most recent measure in the administration's immigration crackdown, President Donald Trump deployed National Guard troops and Marines to the Los Angeles area after the raids sparked days of tumultuous protests throughout the city. The city's downtown has seen a variety of protests, from quiet to boisterous. Over the weekend, protesters blocked a key freeway and set cars on fire.
