Elks face first pre-season test in Calgary on Saturday
The optimism and hype are high for the Edmonton Elks after the end of the 2024 season, which started a culture shift.
Chris Morris was hired as the new president and CEO, Ed Hervey as the vice-president of football operations and general manager, and Mark Kilam as head coach.
Hervey went to work in free agency and rebuilt the roster. Saturday night's pre-season game is the first test for the 2025 version of the Elks as they visit the Calgary Stampders at McMahon Stadium.
Sixty-two players will dress on Saturday for the Elks. They will be led by quarterback Cody Fajardo, who will serve as the backup to starter Tre Ford once the regular season begins in two weeks. Fajardo will start at quarterback for the Elks on Saturday before giving way to rookies Will McElvain and Cody Snyder, who are competing for the third quarterback spot.

Other battles to watch on Saturday are at kicker, receiver, defensive end and the secondary.

Campbell Fair, a 2023 Stampeders draft pick, is competing for the place-kicking job with Elks 2024 draft pick Vincent Blanchard.
The Elks' receiving corps is pretty well set, with four starters sitting on Saturday. It includes second-year players Zach Mathis and Arkell Smith, along with a crop of rookies led by Georgia product Kearis Jackson.
Two veterans are competing for one defensive end spot in Canadian Jonathon Kongo and American Brandon Barlow.
The secondary is the deepest and most competitive position in training camp, where three veterans are being pushed by rookies. Veterans Marcus Lewis, Devodric Bynum and Kobe Williams will play on Saturday in an effort to lock down their spots for the 2025 season.

Harris looks to give Sea Bears massive offensive boost
One of the top scorers in CEBL history is joining the Winnipeg Sea Bears. The club announced Thursday that Jalen Harris, a two-time All-CEBL guard and former Toronto Raptor, has officially signed with the Sea Bears and is expected to join them on the road and play in Friday night's game against the Brampton Honey Badgers (0-5). It's a massive boost to a Winnipeg side that has lost four straight games by double digits and fallen to 1-4 on the season. 'We tried to build a team that would play a little bit better team basketball, and we got a great group of guys… (But) we got off to a slow start,' said Sea Bears head coach and general manager Mike Taylor at the Sport for Life Centre on Thursday. 'We felt we needed a little bit of offensive production and offensive playmaking in the back court. So, from our standpoint, we're really excited to add Jalen. We think he'll bring a lot to the team.' The six-foot-five Dallas, Tex., product averaged 24.5 points, 4.5 rebounds and 4.6 assists in 11 games with the Saskatchewan Rattlers last summer. In 2022, he made his CEBL debut with the Scarborough Shooting Stars and led the team to the championship final. Harris, 26, was most recently in China with the Nanjing Monkey Kings where he averaged 12.5 points, 3.6 rebounds and two assists in 32 games. He was drafted in the second round, 59th overall, by the Raptors in 2020, and appeared in 13 games as a rookie, highlighted by a career-high 31-point performance against the Dallas Mavericks on May 14, 2021. On July 1, 2021, the NBA dealt Harris a one-year suspension after he tested positive for a prohibited substance and he hasn't played in the league since. The Sea Bears have had some accomplished scorers in the past in Teddy Allen and Justin Wright-Foreman, but Taylor believes Harris is a different type of player than those two. Harris set the CEBL's scoring record last year with a 45-point performance against Brampton. 'I think Jalen can play with the ball or without the ball efficiently. I think Jalen is a willing passer, and he's a guy we can use in different situations to play as a point guard, at the point of attack, controlling the tempo, and force defences to play defensive coverage because of his ability to shoot,' said Taylor. 'And I think he's also a guy we can move off the ball, so I think he's got a chance to connect well with every type of teammate we have.' Also joining the Sea Bears this weekend is star Canadian centre Simi Shittu who was finishing up his season in the Greek Basketball League. Shittu isn't expected to play in Brampton on Friday or in Scarborough on Saturday. Shooting has been the biggest issue, as they're dead last in in both field goal (36.7) and three-point percentage (25.7). 'The goal stays the same. We've always been aiming to play our best basketball at the championship weekend and so adding those two talents definitely help our odds and we're happy about it,' said veteran Canadian guard Alex Campbell. 'I think them joining us on the road actually helps us build camaraderie. Between the games, travelling, being at the airport, stuff like that, those types of things do go a long way so I think camaraderie and chemistry will happen quickly.' Brad Marchand's Game 1 goal for Florida Panthers wins donairs for 1,500 fans in Halifax
Halifax's 'little ball of hate' delivered free donairs to about 1,500 people Wednesday night. Brad Marchand's goal for the Florida Panthers in the first game of the Stanley Cup finals had the folks at King of Donair rolling up their sleeves after the maker of the Halifamous late-night snack took to social media promising free donairs if people commented on their Facebook and Instagram posts about the celebrated playmaker and hometown hero before the puck dropped. 'We know Brad likes donairs and, obviously, we're rooting for Canadian teams, too, but we want to see the cup back in Halifax,' said Nicholas Nahas, one of three brothers who co-own the fast-food business that has four outlets in Halifax. 'We're hockey fans and he's a Halifax homegrown boy.' Marchand played for the Boston Bruins when they won the Stanley Cup in 2011. The left winger was traded to Florida this past March. While Marchand scored on a power play at the 12:30 mark of Wednesday night's game, the Edmonton Oilers won Game 1 against Florida 4-3 in overtime. 'Tough night last night,' Nahas said Thursday morning of Florida's loss as he was adding up the number of people who cashed in on the offer of a free donair, which normally retails for $9.89. The business made the offer 'on a whim,' he said. 'We knew what we were getting ourselves into.' He plans to send coupon codes to everyone who commented on the outfit's Marchand posts. 'All of our stores have the master list at the store level and when someone comes in with their code, they cross it off.' The business has made donairs for Marchand before when he hosts private events. 'Brad does have a free donairs for life card,' Nahas said. 'He has redeemed that card a couple of times, but it's almost as if he's redeeming it on behalf of all his fans in Halifax who were commenting.' Not everyone who saw the company's social media posts about Marchand was after a free donair, which for the uninitiated, is a pita filled with spicy ground Canadian beef, tomatoes, onions and slathered in a sweet sauce. 'There was a lot of hate in the comments, too,' Nahas said. 'People were saying, 'I'm only going for Canada,' and 'I don't like him, he's a rat.' Not everyone, I guess, played by the rules and is expecting a donair.' The business expected some blowback, Nahas said. 'We expect that. A lot of people have their blinders on. It's black and white; it's Canada or U.S. And these are people who probably aren't from here or don't know the Brad connection of Halifax.' The brothers who own the business are 'tossing around' ideas for offers before the two teams meet again Friday night. 'It will be game time decision,' Nahas said. While he's 'not a betting man' Nahas said he's also cheering for Edmonton in the finals, but maybe not as loudly. 'It's Brad and Florida over Edmonton for sure,' Nahas said. Besides his scoring skill, Marchand is known for weird antics and relentless chirping aimed at getting inside the heads of opposing players, including licking them. Six years back, ESPN dubbed him 'the NHL's ultimate troll.' Even former U.S. president Barack Obama called Marchand the 'little ball of hate' when the Bruins visited the White House after winning the Stanley Cup in 2011. So, what could the prize for fans be in future online contests if the most suspended player in NHL history licks one of the Panthers during this series? 'That would have to be donairs for life, or something,' Nahas said with a chuckle. 'Or at least a year.' New-look Toronto Argonauts squad to kick off '25 season in Montreal
TORONTO – The Toronto Argonauts squad head coach Ryan Dinwiddie led to a 2024 Grey Cup win will be vastly different than the one tasked with defending the title. Toronto visits the Montreal Alouettes on Friday in the season opener for both teams. But the Argos will be minus seven defensive starters, along with quarterback Chad Kelly and rushing leader Ka'Deem Carey. 'I see a new group coming together and building its identity,' Dinwiddie said. 'I feel like the new pieces really fit in well and even the young rookies fit into the culture and understand what it is. 'I think we're definitely capable of being a playoff team and making a run at the end, but we've obviously got to prove that.' Defensive linemen Jake Ceresna and Robbie Smith (both in Edmonton), Ralph Holley (Cleveland, NFL) and Folarin Orimolade (trade, Calgary), linebacker Tunde Adeleke (Ottawa, then retired) and defensive backs Royce Metchie (Edmonton) and DaShaun Amos (Hamilton) are all gone. Ditto for Carey, who was released last weekend after rushing for 1,060 yards and seven TDs last season, his first with Toronto. For the second straight year, Toronto is opening the season with Kelly, the CFL's 2023 outstanding player. Kelly, 31, suffered a fractured tibia and fibula in last year's 30-28 East Division final win over Montreal that required surgery and was only cleared to practise late last week. Veteran Nick Arbuckle will start in Montreal. Arbuckle got the nod for Toronto's Grey Cup showdown versus Winnipeg, passing for 252 yards and two TDs in securing MVP honours in the Argos' 41-24 victory. Last season, Kelly missed the entire exhibition campaign and Toronto's first nine regular-season contests after being suspended by the CFL for violating its gender-based violence policy. The Argos went 5-4 under Cam Dukes (4-4) and Arbuckle (1-0) before Kelly was reinstated and finished with a 10-8 record to stand second in the East Division. Toronto also released Dukes last weekend. Arbuckle will have a veteran receiving corps with DaVaris Daniels, Damonte Coxie, Dejon Brissett (top Canadian in Grey Cup) and David Ungerer III. But Makai Polk (61 catches, 1,024 yards, five TDs) is now an Atlanta Falcon. Deonta McMahon (288 rushing yards, six-yard average, 30 catches, 237 yards, TD) replaces Carey at halfback. The offensive line will again be solid, anchored by Canadian tackle Ryan Hunter, the CFL's top lineman last year, who moves to the right side this season. Towering Sage Doxtater (6-7, 343 pounds) starts at left guard after joining the Argos late last season. Sophomore defensive end Derek Parish (six sacks last season) starts on the defensive line, Veteran Anthony Lanier II (free agent, Saskatchewan) and rookie Jeremiah Ojo ('25 first-round pick) should both get chances to play. Veteran middle linebacker Wynton McManis returns and will be flanked by Canadian Cam Judge (trade, Calgary). And although Amos and Metchie are gone, cornerbacks Tarvarus McFadden and Beniie Franklin and halfback Mark Milton remain in the secondary. Veteran kicker Lirim Hajrullahu and punter John Haggerty are also back. The return game is handled capably by Janarion Grant, the CFL's top special-teams player last season, who will miss the season opener due to injury. 'Our guys all know what the expectation is,' Dinwiddie said. 'I don't care how many guys are new or how many guys we've lost, no one cares about that. 'We've got to understand it's going to be a tough season, we're going to have some ups and downs just like you always do. It's a new chapter, a new season, and now we've got to go earn it.' Since 2022, Toronto is 7-2 versus Montreal in the regular season but Montreal holds the overall edge (112-99-3). Dinwiddie, entering his fifth season as Argos head coach, is 26-10 versus division rivals. Montreal head coach Jason Maas is 13-5 within the East Division. 2024 record: 10-8, second, East Division.
