AS Watson and HSBC have grown together since the very beginnings of Hong Kong

Hong Kong is a renowned commercial and financial hub, and that status can be traced to the 19th century, when early entrepreneurs laid the foundations for the city's success with some of its most enduring household names. Among these is AS Watson, established in 1841 – as The Hong Kong Dispensary, with just a single shop.
Over the following decades, the company's significance in Hong Kong grew alongside the city's rapid development. AS Watson was appointed chemist to the Hong Kong governor in 1869, and inspired by the need to have safe, clean water during the plague of the late 1890s, the company established Watsons Water in 1903.
Today, as the world's largest international health and beauty retailer, AS Watson Group operates more than 17,000 stores in 30 markets around the globe, with some of the most recognisable brands including Watsons, ParknShop, Fortress, Superdrug and many more. All share a strong focus on customer experience, innovation and community.
For Malina Ngai, group CEO of AS Watson, much of the company's success can be attributed to its long-standing partnership with HSBC, the Hong Kong-founded bank which celebrates its 160th anniversary this year. 'The story between AS Watson and HSBC goes back 160 years,' Ngai says. 'In fact, AS Watson appeared on HSBC's very first customer ledger in 1865. I believe that trust, understanding and shared experiences have defined the relationship over the last 16 decades.'
Beyond sharing values, both AS Watson and the bank have grown together to become deeply ingrained in Hong Kong society. 'We have been touching the lives of different generations in Hong Kong through our retail offerings … and HSBC has also been part of the everyday life of Hong Kong,' Ngai adds.
Together, the two Hong Kong stalwart brands strive to make a positive impact, contributing to a better future for the city and beyond while supporting their customers. 'We're proud to call Hong Kong home, so our shared success has grown from here,' Ngai says. 'For both HSBC and AS Watson, we remain as committed to Hong Kong as ever. It's this shared purpose that strengthens our bond, taking it beyond just business.'

HKEX chairman Carlson Tong sells Pok Fu Lam luxury home for US$9 million

The chairman of Hong Kong Exchanges and Clearing (HKEX) sold a house in Pok Fu Lam for HK$70 million (US$8.9 million), around three times what he paid for it a quarter of a century ago, amid signs of improving sentiment in the luxury residential property market Carlson Tong Ka-shing bought the 3,114 sq ft, four-bedroom house at Villa Cecil – 200 Victoria Road in Pok Fu Lam – in 2000 for HK$23.2 million, according to Land Registry records. The selling price translates to about HK$22,479 per square foot. Tong declined to comment. Agents said the deal was one of two secondary transactions in the past four years in phase one of Villa Cecil. A 3,308 sq ft house in the first phase was sold for HK$100 million, or HK$30,230 per square foot, in 2021, according to Centaline. Phase one consists of 10 houses. Phase two and three are low-density buildings with a total of 65 units. Tong's sale came as some other wealthy investors have been taking advantage of falling prices to snap up luxury homes. Property agents said prices of exclusive residences had plunged by as much as 45 per cent from their peaks. The sister of former Hong Kong chief executive Tung Chee-hwa bought a HK$119 million flat in the Mid-Levels neighbourhood. The 3,349 sq ft, four-bedroom unit in Grenville House, located at 3 Magazine Gap Road, was sold on Tuesday, according to Land Registry records. And Cantopop singer Gloria Tang Tze-kei bought two flats in Wan Chai in March at a 35 per cent discount from a peak price three years ago. Tang, who uses the stage name G.E.M., bought two 2,480 sq ft units in Leon Court at Wong Nai Chung Gap Road for a combined HK$85 million, according to Land Registry records.

‘US troops critical': South Korean presidential candidate signals turn on China policy

US troops in South Korea could be 'critical' for containing China, and might potentially benefit Seoul's outreach to the Arctic, according to the front runner for the coming presidential election who has signalled a possible change in his position on China. During an exclusive interview with Time Magazine published on Thursday, the Democratic Party of Korea's (DPK) presidential candidate Lee Jae-myung said US Forces Korea (USFK) could play a 'critical role for the United States policy of containment against China'. He also said Washington's recent rapprochement with Moscow was 'a means to exert pressure on China' and could benefit Seoul with the possible opening of Arctic shipping routes. 04:19 Political divide widens along gender lines for young first-time voters in South Korea Political divide widens along gender lines for young first-time voters in South Korea 'If so, it could offer strategic advantages, not only for the US and Russia but also for Korea,' he said, according to Time. South Korea is set to hold a presidential election on Tuesday. Former president Yoon Suk-yeol was impeached in April, following political turmoil stemming from his abrupt declaration of martial law in December. Lee and the progressive DPK lead South Korea's presidential race with up to 50 per cent of public support according to the polls. They have largely been regarded as more friendly in their diplomacy with China compared to Yoon and his conservative People Power Party (PPP), which emphasised the alliance with the US and strengthening South Korea's outreach in addressing security challenges outside the Korean peninsula. During the last presidential election campaign in 2022 when Lee competed with Yoon for the presidency, Lee was criticised for his description of the American military in Korea as 'occupation forces'.

Hong Kong athletics bosses dismiss trail runners' complaints over ‘crazy, dangerous' race

Athletics bosses have defended their handling of a trail race that runners called 'crazy and dangerous', adding if competitors had concerns they should not have taken part. Advertisement Nearly a week after complaints first surfaced on social media over the Hong Kong Trail Championships in Tai Mei Tuk, organisers issued a statement on Friday dismissing any criticism and pointing to a host of other races that had also been held in late May. However, the Hong Kong Association of Athletics Affiliates (HKAAA) did apologise for 'inconvenience caused to local residents' after rubbish left behind following the event resulted in one of the city's oldest and best-preserved rural settlements being littered with plastic waste. Officials had come under fire for opting to stage the 62.4km (38.8 mile) championships – which served as the selection race for the World Mountain and Trail Running Championships in September – on May 25, when temperatures reached 26 degrees Celsius (86 degrees Fahrenheit) and humidity was high. In its statement, the HKAAA said while 'an earlier month with an average lower temperature would be preferable, holding trail running races in May in Hong Kong is not unusual'. Of the rest, the longest was 27km, and several were below 10km.
