Raipur: Security forces dealt a crushing blow to Maoists in the 24-day
Karegutta Hills operation
-- 31 hardcore PLGA cadres were killed, the Naxals' 'unified command centre' was smashed and four weapons manufacturing factories were destroyed,
CRPF
DG GP Singh and Chhattisgarh DGP Arun Dev said at a press meet in Bijapur on Wednesday.
"Today, the Tricolour is flying proudly on the hill on which red terror once reigned," said Union home minister Amit Shah, lauding the forces for their bravery in extremely hostile conditions.
Ahead of the press briefing, Maoist central committee member and spokesperson Abhay released a statement, admitting to the death of 26 cadres and yet again appealing for peace talks. He also asked Prime Minister Narendra Modi to "clarify if govt was open to negotiations".The mission began on April 21 on the Karegutta Hills range in Bijapur, on the Chhattisgarh-Telangana border. Shrouded in secrecy, there was very little information coming out on the operation that was spread over 1,200 sq km of treacherous, mined terrain. At Wednesday's press briefing, CRPF DG G P Singh said: "We have recovered a large cache of arms, ammunition, and a sniper rifle." DGP Gautam said: "Maoists believed this region to be impenetrable. They thought no one could cross such terrain, but our forces proved them wrong."As many as 21 gunbattles took place between April 21 and May 11, 2025, and 31 bodies of Maoists in uniform were recovered. Sixteen of them are women. Those that have been identified so far carried a combined bounty of over Rs 1.7 crore. Preliminary investigation suggests that they were from PLGA Battalion 1, Telangana State Committee, and Dandakaranya Special Zonal Committee.Maoists had riddled the hill sides with hundreds of IEDs, making the mission harder for the forces. They advanced cautiously, defusing 450 IEDs along the way, but 15 exploded, injuring 18 jawans. All of them are stable, said officers. Some 216 Maoist hideouts and bunkers were destroyed and searches at these locations yielded a whopping 450 IEDs, 818 BGL rockets, 899 bundles of Cordex, detonators, and large quantities of explosives. Security forces destroyed four Maoist 'technical units', where BGL shells, guns, IEDs, and other weapons were manufactured.Conditions atop Karegutta Hills were extremely harsh, with daytime temperatures exceeding 45°C. Many soldiers suffered from dehydration but continued the operation with high morale, said the officers.A base camp and a helipad were established on the hilltop to support the mission, which was launched following detailed technical intelligence collection and 24-hour analysis, DG CRPF said."Anti-Maoist operations have intensified since 2014 with a unified and multi-dimensional strategy. We have strengthened joint capabilities through integrated training between state and central forces. Today, we are leveraging advanced technology for precise surveillance on Maoist movements," said CRPF DG Singh. As a result of these efforts, the number of Maoist-affected districts has plunged from 35 in 2024 to just 6 in 2025, he added."Maoist-affected police station jurisdictions have reduced from 330 in 76 districts (2014) to 151 in 42 districts (2024). Civilian and security casualties have dropped significantly, with security personnel deaths falling from 88 in 2014 to 19 in 2024. Maoist surrenders increased, with 928 in 2024 and 718 already in 2025. The number of encounters has risen, with 2089 Maoists killed since 2014 — 197 neutralized in just the first four months of 2025," said the CRPF chief.Govt attributed this shift to increased development efforts in remote regions, including construction of roads, mobile towers, schools, and health facilities. More than 320 security camps have been set up across LWE-hit states since 2019 -- 185 of which include Forward Operating Bases (FOBs), joint task forces, and 68 night-landing helipads, the officer said.Security agencies, including NIA and SIA, have intensified investigations into Maoist financial networks, and choked funding sources, said the officers. They also condemned the Maoists' "continued use of child soldiers". "Children are being recruited into Bal Sangham and Chetna Natya Mandali, used as couriers, and later trained to carry weapons," DG Gautam said.Target: Eradication By March 2026The Maoist leadership is fragmented and now forced into hiding in smaller units, said the officer. Forces have pledged to neutralize or force the surrender of remaining leadership cadres by the end of 2025. "The belief in their invincibility has been shattered. We are determined to eliminate the Maoist threat from India by 2026," said DG Gautam.Battleground: Karegutta HillsThe Karegutta Hill range spans about 60km in length and varies from 5km to 20km in width, forming a highly difficult terrain. Over the past two and a half years, Maoists had gradually established a strong base here, housing about 300-350 armed cadres, including the PLGA 'technical department'.Based on intelligence inputs, an operational plan was developed, and from April 21, 2025, a large-scale joint operation was launched by
Chhattisgarh Police
and CRPF. This turned out to be the largest and most extensive
anti-Maoist operation
so far and stands as an excellent example of coordination among various state and central agencies.
The aim of this operation was to weaken the armed strength of the Maoists, neutralize their armed groups, clear them from these difficult terrains, and dismantle the PLGA Battalion.Raipur: Security forces dealt a crushing blow to Maoists in the 24-day Karegutta Hills operation -- 31 hardcore PLGA cadres were killed, the Naxals' 'unified command centre' was smashed and four weapons manufacturing factories were destroyed, CRPF DG GP Singh and Chhattisgarh DGP Arun Dev said at a press meet in Bijapur on Wednesday.

Govt committed to fulfill all its promises: Min Narayana

Tirupati: The TDP alliance is committed to fulfill all its promises including the Super Six, asserted MA&UD Minister Ponguru Narayana. Along with M Sugunamma, the chairperson of AP Greenery and Beautification Corporation; Yadav Corporation Chairman Narasimha Yadav and municipal officials, he inspected municipal dumping yard in Ramapuram village on Saturday, where waste is being accumulated. Minister Narayana pointed out that the previous YSRCP government not only left the huge burden of Rs 10 lakh crore loans, but also left 85 lakh tons of uncleared municipal waste. He said that the TDP-led alliance government has already taken up cleaning of waste and 45 lakh tones was cleared, and works are in full swing to clear the remaining 40 lakh tones in the town. He said that Tirupati ZIGMA company, which has taken up clearing of 900 tonnes against 2,700 tonnes of waste daily, was instructed to speed up waste clearance. ZIGMA company representative informed the Minister that they are using generators for power supply as there is no electricity connection. Responding to their request, he directed Joint Collector Subham Bansal to provide power supply immediately to the dumping yard. SPDCL officials informed Minister that power supply will be provided within four or five days. Minister Narayana claimed that despite facing financial restraints, the government started fulfilling its promises one by one, citing the government releasing Rs 10,000 crore for Talliki Vandanam scheme towards school fees to all poor children. He criticised that the previous government had ignored several schemes initiated by the TDP including Swachh Andhra Corporation and also mechanisation for fast clearing of urban waste to avoid huge accumulation of waste in all municipal towns. The present government led by CM Chandrababu Naidu had already taken up to strengthening of all these works by getting funds from the Central government, which was stopped during the YSRCP period because of its failure to provide its share, he added. The Minister said another 70 Anna Canteens will be opened soon and plans are afoot to extend the scheme to rural areas also to provide quality food at a cheaper rate to more number of poor people. It may be noted here that Minister Narayana attended a national meeting in new Delhi on waste management in municipal towns a few days ago. Deputy Commissioner Amaraiah, ME Gomati were present.

Pool, Bathtub Found Inside Religious Site During Demolition Drive In Gujarat

A swimming pool, a bathtub and huge, spacious rooms - these were among the constructions that were found inside an illegally-built religious site, that was demolished along with a series of other similar structures in Gujarat's Jamnagar on Saturday. According to sources, the luxurious facilities were found at a place of worship in Bachu Nagar Extension, which has come under the scanner of civic authorities over the construction of at least 294 houses, including four religious sites, illegally. The occupants of these houses had raised these structures around 20-25 years ago and have since been residing here, the sources said. Some of these houses were built at a significant environmental cost, as it blocked the flow of Rangmati river flowing in the area. "Due to this, rainwater often accumulated in residential areas. The municipality began the demolition work today. After years, all the houses are now being demolished," a source said. Twelve JCBs, three Hitachi machines and 13 tractors are being used for this purpose. Around 100 people are engaged in the demolition process, the source added. Another source said four religious places were illegally built at the spot. "They covered over 11,000 square feet. The police were shocked to find luxurious facilities inside a shrine. The price of the land where the demolition took place, under police surveillance, on Friday is approximately Rs 200 crore, the source said. According to Superintendent of Police (SP) Premsukh Delu, 300 illegal structures were razed on Saturday. "There was illegal encroachment near the Rangmati River. Due to this illegal encroachment, flood-like conditions arise in Jamnagar during the rainy season... An area of about eight lakh square feet has been cleared. Several criminals had built their houses and farmhouses there. All of them have now been removed," he said.

Israel Bombed World's Largest Gas Field In Iran. Why It Is A Big Deal

New Delhi: Iran was forced to partially halt gas production at the world's largest gas field, South Pars, after an Israeli airstrike caused a fire at one of its key processing units on Saturday. The attack, which hit Phase 14 of the offshore site, led to the suspension of 12 million cubic metres of gas output per day. This was Israel's first direct strike on Iran 's oil and gas infrastructure. FOLLOW LIVE UPDATES About The South Pars Gas Field The South Pars gas field, located offshore in Iran's Bushehr Province and shared with Qatar (which calls its portion the North Field), is the world's largest natural gas reserve. It provides nearly two-thirds (around 66 per cent) of Iran's domestic gas, which is essential for electricity, heating, and petrochemical production. Iran is the world's third-largest gas producer after the United States and Russia, generating around 275 billion cubic metres (bcm) annually, about 6.5 per cent of global output. Due to international sanctions, most of this gas is consumed domestically, though some is exported to countries like Iraq. Qatar, with help from global energy firms like Shell and ExxonMobil, exports 77 million tonnes of liquefied natural gas (LNG) every year from the same field to Europe and Asia. Why This Strike Is A Big Deal New Front In A Dangerous Conflict Until now, Israeli strikes focused on Iran's military and nuclear assets. But targeting energy infrastructure like South Pars crosses a red line, signalling that economic warfare is now in play. "This is probably the most important attack on oil and gas infrastructure since Abqaiq," said Jorge Leon, an analyst at Rystad Energy, referencing the 2019 attack on Saudi oil facilities that shook global markets, as per Bloomberg. Threat to Global Energy Supplies South Pars is a shared field with Qatar, which is a major global LNG supplier. Escalation in this region raises fears of attacks on other critical chokepoints like Kharg Island (Iran's main oil export terminal) and the Strait of Hormuz, through which 21 per cent of the world's LNG and 14 million barrels of crude oil daily pass. "This is a warning shot that Israel is willing to hit Iranian energy infrastructure if Israeli civilians are targeted," said Richard Bronze, head of geopolitics at Energy Aspects, as per The NYT. Analysts warn that if the conflict continues to escalate, Qatar's energy operations and Israel's own infrastructure could also become targets. Both countries play critical roles in energy exports, and any attack could create ripple effects across Asia, Europe, and global supply chains. Market Reactions Oil prices surged as much as 14 per cent on Friday following the initial Israeli strikes, settling around $73 (Rs 7000) per barrel. Even though South Pars mostly serves domestic needs, its significance lies in the message: energy is now fair game. With OPEC's third-largest producer (Iran) under attack, any future assault on Kharg Island or disruption in the Strait of Hormuz could send oil and gas prices skyrocketing. The fighting will go on despite international calls for de-escalation, Iranian media reported. Iran's President, Masoud Pezeshkian, has vowed a fiercer retaliation, The NYT reports. Iran's Fragile Energy Sector The strike comes as Iran faces one of its worst energy crises in decades. Gas shortages have caused frequent blackouts, costing the economy around $250 million a day, according to the Iran Chamber of Commerce. The government has been forced to cut power to homes and factories, even before the Israeli strikes. Sanctions and outdated infrastructure have left Iran struggling to meet demand. "Attacking Iran's energy infrastructure will be a disaster because repairing them will be costly and take time," said Abdollah Babakhani, an Iran energy expert based in Germany. Global Impact Though South Pars fuels Iran domestically, its location in the Persian Gulf, a key global energy route, makes it critical. The Israeli strike shows energy assets are now on the battlefield, raising risks for oil markets. Any escalation could spike fuel prices and trigger inflation, especially in energy-dependent regions like Europe and Asia.
