CM praises Cial for socializing profit, launches digitization project
Kochi: Lauding
Cochin International Airport Ltd
(Cial) for being a model for socializing profit,
chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan
on Monday launched the Rs 200-crore
Cial 2.0 project
, which aims to fully digitize airport operations. Vijayan emphasized the strategic importance of ensuring safety of air passengers and protection of airport assets.
With around 50,000 passengers travelling through Kochi airport daily and close to 1,00,000 people visiting the premises for travel-related needs, security of digital assets becomes even more significant. The airport also hosts over 400 govt and non-govt agencies, 30 airlines, around 200 commercial establishments, including hotels, and more than 12,000 employees, making it a vast and complex travel hub.
Cial 2.0 project incorporates various initiatives focused on artificial intelligence, automation and foolproof cybersecurity to tackle emerging challenges in cyberspace and enhance travel experience.
As part of the project, full-body scanners have been introduced, eliminating need for physical pat-downs during security checks. An automated tray retrieval system has been implemented to speed up cabin baggage screening.
Additionally, 4,000 AI-enabled surveillance cameras have been installed to strengthen airport and perimeter security. Airport's existing bomb detection and disposal system is also being upgraded.

"Apart from these initiatives, several large-scale projects launched last year are progressing rapidly. Apron construction, part of the Rs 700-crore international terminal development, is in its final stages. Commercial zone being constructed in front of Terminal 3 is also advancing steadily. These developments have created around 29,000 job opportunities," said a Cial official.
Cial authorities said the firm is committed to offering maximum benefits to investors, local communities and workers.
"In 2023-24 fiscal year, it distributed a 45% dividend to investors," said an official. The company also undertook multiple bridge construction projects and recently launched a society for cargo loading and unloading contract workers, which is functioning effectively. Cial plays a key role in Wayanad Model Township project initiated by state govt.
It is independently installing solar panels on all 400 houses in the township.
Industries minister P Rajeeve presided over the inaugural event. MLAs Anwar Sadath and Roji M John; MPs Benny Behanan, Hibi Eden and Haris Beeran, and Cial managing director S Suhas also attended the programme.
As part of the event, aero digital summit featuring an AI experience centre, a robotics display and a panel discussion involving leading national AI experts were held.

3 summer special trains giving much relief to migrants from UP, Jharkhand
1 2 3 Chandigarh: Northern Railways has brought major relief to migrant workers and families in the Tricity area by operating three summer special trains. The trains— Chandigarh-Dhanbad Garib Rath, Chandigarh-Patna Garib Rath, and Chandigarh-Gorakhpur-Dibrugarh Express — are running at full capacity, significantly easing travel during the summer rush. The move has boosted direct connectivity from Chandigarh to key cities such as Lucknow, Varanasi, Bareilly, and Dhanbad. Officials say the trains have emerged as a lifeline for hundreds of migrants who otherwise struggled to secure bookings in regular long-distance trains, which were already overbooked well before the start of the vacation season. Senior divisional commercial manager (DCM) Naveen Kumar confirmed that the decision to run these summer specials was made in response to rising demand. "Three special trains were sanctioned to cater to the needs of migrants and travellers from the region. These trains are running packed and have brought much-needed relief to passengers," he said. Train number 03311, running from Dhanbad to Chandigarh, operates every Tuesday and Friday. It departs at 11:50 pm and reaches Chandigarh at 4:30 am on the third day. The return service, train number 03312, leaves Chandigarh every Thursday and Sunday at 6 am and reaches Dhanbad at 9 am the following day. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Sunteck Sky Park, Mira Road - 2 & 3 BHK @ ₹1.33 Cr* Sunteck Sky Park Learn More Undo The route passes through major junctions including Varanasi, Lucknow, Bareilly, Moradabad, and Ambala. The train from Chandigarh leaves every Thursday at 11:35 pm and reaches Patna at 10:10 pm the next day. The return train departs every Friday night from Patna and reaches Chandigarh late the following evening. With halts at Lucknow, Sultanpur, Varanasi, Buxar, and Ara, this service has become an important corridor for passengers from Eastern Uttar Pradesh and Bihar. Additionally, the Chandigarh-Gorakhpur-Dibrugarh Express (train numbers 15904/15903) departs from Chandigarh every Sunday night at 11:35 pm. It reaches Gorakhpur the next morning and continues onward to Dibrugarh, reaching by the third day. The return train from Dibrugarh runs every Monday morning and arrives in Chandigarh two days later. All three trains have seen high demand since their announcement. Bookings are open both online and at railway ticket counters. Officials have urged passengers to travel responsibly and make early reservations due to limited seat availability. With these services in place, migrants from UP and Jharkhand can now travel home for summer with far less hassle.

Farmers dump mangoes onstreets after prices crash
Bengaluru/Kolar: Protests erupted in Srinivaspura–India's Mango Capital – located 90 km from Bengaluru, Wednesday following a sudden crash in mango prices. With the king of fruits commanding little respect in the market, distraught farmers across Kolar district took to the streets, demanding a support price and withdrawal of the ban imposed by the neighbouring Andhra Pradesh on Karnataka mangoes. The growers poured several quintals of mangoes on the streets and staged a protest. Fighting the vagaries of weather that cast a dark spell on mango production, the farmers were hopeful of recovering their expenses with whatever was left on the trees. However, with the crash in mango prices, both the farmers and traders incurred losses. "At the beginning of the season, we were dismayed by the delayed flowering and subsequently the crop was debilitated due to the extreme heat, and now the early onset of monsoon has wreaked havoc across the region. Not much is left for us to take home," bemoaned Ravishankar Reddy, a mango farmer in Srinivaspur taluk. With the crop cultivated over 45,000 hectares of area, Kolar supplies more than half of Karnataka's mangoes, and Srinivasapura, with over 35 varieties of the fruit, is known as India's mango capital. But unlike previous years, the prices of mangoes dropped to as low as Rs 3,000-4,000 per tonne. "It used to be around Rs 10,000-12,000 per tonne all these years during this time of the season. In the retail market, 1 kg of mango is sold for Rs 8-10 now! With nearly 40% of the crop awaiting harvest, the price crash has pushed farmers to the wall," lamented Bayya Reddy, another farmer. With a similar situation unfolding in Andhra Pradesh, the border districts of that state refused to allow the transportation of mangoes from Karnataka. This added to the woes of Karnataka farmers, forcing them to shut down the entire taluk Wednesday demanding stability in market prices and free trade across borders. The day-long bandh by the Srinivaspur Mango Growers Association evoked a total response, with all establishments remaining completely closed throughout the day. "The mango market at Srinivaspur gets about 900-1,000 tonnes of mangoes every day, with the demand lasting till July. But this season, there are hardly any takers due to a lack of demand in both Andhra Pradesh and Tamil Nadu, where mango pulp processing industries thrive," explained Munishamappa, a farmer from Kolar. "The mango season in Tamil Nadu and Andhra Pradesh begins after the harvest in Kolar. However, most of the pulp processing factories in these states did not even use 50% of their stock last year due to a drop in exports, triggered by a steep rise in air cargo charges. Similar is the situation in Srinivaspur taluk. This has affected the overall purchase of mangoes. Besides, the quality of mangoes has also taken a hit this year due to the early onset of monsoon," explained a technical officer of the Karnataka State Mango Board. Sensing the farmers' anguish, Kolar deputy commissioner MR Ravi held a meeting with the farmers and promised them that the district administration would persuade pulp processing units to purchase mangoes, besides exploring other options to stabilise prices in the market. Kolar MP Muniswamy also urged the state govt to announce a minimum support price for mangoes in Karnataka. ——- Box: Govt may announce MSP Horticulture minister SS Mallikarjun acknowledged the crisis across the mango belt of Karnataka and said he discussed the issue with chief minister Siddaramaiah. "We have asked the CM to announce a minimum support price for mangoes. But this would require additional funds, and the finance department headed by the CM must approve our proposal. Currently, the MSP for mangoes is around Rs 3 per kg, and the govt may increase it by Rs 1-2 over the next few days," Mallikarjun said.

SC: Homebuyer seeking refund can't ask builder to reimburse loan interest
NEW DELHI: Supreme Court has held that a homebuyer, who seeks refund due to delay in completion of a project, cannot claim that a developer also reimburse the amount paid as interest on home loan. The buyer is only entitled to the principal amount paid to a company and a 'compensation' in terms of the interest on the said amount as per the agreement, it said. It set aside a consumer court order directing the Greater Mohali Area Development Authority to reimburse the interest paid by a homebuyer to a bank on home loan in addition to refunding the principal amount with 8% interest. SC: How buyer funds flat buy not developer's consideration A bench of Justices Sanjay Karol and Prasanna B Varale said there cannot be multiple heads to grant damages and interest over and above what is agreed upon between the homebuyer and the builder. Referring to various SC verdicts, the bench said there were no exceptional or strong reasons for directing GMADA to pay the interest on the loan taken by the homebuyer. The bench said, "Whether buyers of the flat do so by utilising their savings, taking a loan for such purpose or securing the required finances by any other permissible means, is not a consideration that the developer of the project is required to keep in mind. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like It's Affordable and Actually Works Undo "For, so far as they are concerned, such a consideration is irrelevant. The one who is buying a flat is a consumer, and the one who is building it is a service provider. That is the only relationship between the parties. "If there is a deficiency or delay in service, the consumer is entitled to be compensated for the same. Repayment of the entire principal amount along with 8% interest thereon, as stipulated in the contract, alongside the clarification that there shall be no other liability on the authority, sufficiently meets this requirement." In this case, the Punjab State Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission had directed GMADA to refund the entire amount of Rs 41 lakh along with interest at the rate of 8%, apart from compensation of Rs 60,000 to the buyer for the mental tension and harassment suffered by him, in addition to reimbursing the interest paid by the buyer to banks on home loan. The court said once the parties had agreed for a particular consequence of delay in handing over of possession, then there had to be exceptional and strong reasons to award compensation at more than the agreed rate.
