March 5 - Javon Small delivered 18 points and several key plays down the stretch as West Virginia topped its interim coach from last year, Josh Eilert, in a 71-69 victory over Utah on Tuesday in Salt Lake City.
Amani Hansberry contributed 12 points and six rebounds as the Mountaineers (18-12, 9-10 Big 12) enhanced their chances of gaining an at-large berth in the NCAA Tournament after opening the day in the No. 48 spot in the NET ratings.
West Virginia got 12 points from Joseph Yesufu and 10 from Jonathan Powell, with each hitting a key 3-pointer in the final eight minutes.
The Mountaineers also got the best of Eilert, who coached them to a 9-23 record last year after the departure of coach Bob Huggins. Eilert moved into an interim job again last week when Utah fired Craig Smith.
The win also keeps West Virginia alive to finish in the top eight in the Big 12 and earn a first-round bye in the conference tournament next week.
Gabe Madsen scored 23 points and Mike Sharavjamts added all 12 of his points in the second half for the Utes (16-14, 8-11). Ezra Ausar scored nine of his 11 points at the free throw line for Utah.
West Virginia trailed by eight points in the second half before rallying. In the closing minutes, a seven-point run by the Mountaineers was decisive.
Small drained an NBA-length 3-pointer and followed with an alley-oop feed to Eduardo Andre for a slam dunk that put the Mountaineers up for good, 63-58, with 2:52 left.
Small also made a driving shot off glass with 37 seconds left that kept West Virginia in front, 68-64.
In their final home game this season, the Utes got off to a blistering start. They made their first four 3-point attempts, including three by Madsen as Utah roared to a 19-7 lead.
The Mountaineers answered with a 10-point run, capped by triples by Yesufu and Powell to make it 19-17.
West Virginia made six straight shots late in the first half, including 3-pointers by Small and Hansberry, to take a 30-29 lead at the break.
Early in the second half, 3-pointers by Jake Wahlin and Sharavjamts started and finished an 8-0 run that gave the Utes a 44-36 lead.
The Mountaineers responded behind Hansberry, who muscled for a three-point play and added a triple that put them up 54-52 with 6:55 left.

NBA star looks unrecognizable with new look as he enters Chinese monastery after injury scare

NBA star Victor Wembanyama is currently in the middle of a retreat at a Chinese monastery where he looks unrecognizable with a shaved head. The 7-foot-3 Frenchman is in the middle of the 10-day exercise trying to stay as isolated as possible. Wembanyama can be seen praying in grey robes as well as running alongside a forest. The San Antonio Spurs sensation appeared in China in one of his first public appearances since his injury scare. Wembanyama was diagnosed with deep vein thrombosis in right shoulder in February, ending his season, with the Spurs believing it to be an 'isolated condition.' A vein thrombosis occurs when blood begins to clot in deeper veins in the body. The issue can become seriously dangerous because those clogs could loosen and end up in the lungs, causing a pulmonary embolism. Wemby is in China beginning his 'journey of inner discipline, focus, and mind-body harmony' at the Shaolin Temple According to a Buddhist monk, Wemby is on a ''Summer Retreat'' tradition that is tied back to ancient Buddhist practices (via @SpursGDP, @SpursReporter) — Bleacher Report (@BleacherReport) June 11, 2025 NBA star Victor Wembanyama is currently in the middle of a retreat at a Chinese monastery It is almost always treated with blood-thinning medication, which typically precludes a player from participating in a contact sport such as basketball. Athletes who are involved with contact sports are typically advised to avoid using such medication because of the heightened chance of bleeding. Wembanyama's injury came just days after first All-Star Game appearance. The 21-year-old Frenchman was the NBA's Rookie of the Year in 2023-24, as well as an All-Defensive First Team selection after leading the league in blocked shots. He was averaging 24.3 points, 11 rebounds, 3.8 blocks and 3.7 assists; the only other player to finish a season averaging all that was Kareem Abdul-Jabbar in 1975-76. The Spurs are positioned to make a jump with Wembanyama in his third year in the NBA, as he might not be the only superstar on his team come October. San Antonio is believed to be a major play in the sweepstakes for both Kevin Durant and Giannis Antetokounmpo.

Report: Suns weighing Kevin Durant trade options

June 11 - The Phoenix Suns are actively working with Kevin Durant's business partner to weigh trade options, ESPN reported Wednesday. The Suns and Boardroom CEO Rich Kleiman have met "multiple times" in the past week to discuss potential destinations for the future Hall of Famer, per the report. Teams that have reportedly expressed interest in the 36-year-old forward include the Houston Rockets, Miami Heat, Minnesota Timberwolves, New York Knicks and San Antonio Spurs, although the report indicated that "several wild-card suitors" have recently entered the conversation. Durant is due to earn $54.7 million in 2025-26. If he is traded, the 15-time All-Star becomes eligible to sign a two-year extension worth up to $112 million in July. The Suns finished 36-46 this season despite having the highest payroll in NBA history, leading to the firing of head coach Mike Budenholzer and a demotion for general manager James Jones. A two-time NBA champion and four-time scoring champion, Durant averaged 26.6 points, 6.0 rebounds and 4.2 assists in 62 games (all starts) in 2024-25. --Field Level Media
