SC tags Partha Chatterjee's bail plea with co-accused in West Bengal's cash-for-jobs scam

New Delhi, May 8 (UNI) The Supreme Court on Wednesday tagged the bail application of former West Bengal minister and Trinamool Congress (TMC) leader, Partha Chatterjee, with a pending matter involving a co-accused in the high-profile multi-crore West Bengal's cash-for-jobs scam, while scheduling the next hearing for July 17.
Appearing for Chatterjee, the counsel submitted that the trial had stalled and opposed the separation of his client's proceedings from those of the co-accused.
'He is bedridden and cannot even walk,' the lawyer argued, emphasising Chatterjee's deteriorating health condition.
However, Additional Solicitor General (ASG) S V Raju strongly opposed the plea, stating, 'He was a minister, this is a serious case. He is neck-deep in corruption. Genuine candidates were denied jobs while only those who paid were recruited.'
He further said that a hospital was favouring high-profile accused and that the former minister was medically fit.
The bench, comprising Justices Vikram Nath and Sanjiv Khanna, questioned the delay in listing the bail matter, asking, 'Why is the bail matter posted for July?'
The ASG replied by citing the involvement of multiple co-accused and the gravity of the charges, including misuse of official position and corruption.
The court noted that a Special Leave Petition (SLP) filed by a co-accused against the same Calcutta High Court orders dated November 20 and December 24, 2023, was already scheduled for July 2025.
Consequently, the apex court directed that Chatterjee's petition be tagged with the existing matter and heard jointly on July 17, 2025.
In a significant procedural directive, the bench also ordered the Chief Secretary of West Bengal to take a decision on sanctioning prosecution against the co-accused within two weeks, emphasising that neither the State nor the co-accused were parties before the Court at this stage.
'We have not expressed any opinion on merits but directed the needful to ensure the facilitation of trial,' the court observed.
During the hearing, Justice Khanna expressed concern over inconsistent and verbose rulings in bail matters from the High Courts.
'In bail matters, High Courts are writing lengthy judgments and delivering divergent views? What is happening, Mr Raju?' he questioned.
To avoid multiplicity of proceedings, the bench also directed the Supreme Court Registry to tag any future SLPs filed against the same High Court orders with the present case.
The cash-for-jobs scam continues to draw national attention due to its political ramifications, with multiple leaders and bureaucrats under investigation for alleged recruitment irregularities in West Bengal's public sector hiring process.

Banke Bihari temple priests threaten to 'relocate Thakurji' over corridor redevelopment plan

AGRA: Priests of the centuries-old Banke Bihari temple in Mathura, who are opposed to the proposed 'redevelopment plan for the Banke Bihari corridor in Vrindavan', alleged on Monday, that if govt does not heed their concerns, they will relocate the Banke Bihari deity to another site. The latest development came after a series of protests by the Goswami community members and locals against the proposed corridor and the creation of the Banke Bihari temple trust by the state govt. Ghanshyam Goswami, 60, a member of the management committee, said, "The problem is that the govt wants to turn this place of faith into a picnic spot. The Banke Bihari Trust was formed without consulting us. We're open to suggestions for improving the management of the temple but if this situation continues, we'll not hesitate to move Thakurji out of the temple. This temple was founded by our forefathers, and the customs and traditions here date back to the 19th century. " The Supreme Court, in its May 15 verdict, permitted the UP govt to continue with the 'Rs 500 cr redevelopment plan for the Shri Banke Bihari temple corridor in Vrindavan'. The project, approved by the bench of Justice Bela M Trivedi and Justice SC Sharma, enables the state to utilise temple funds to acquire about 5 acres of land near the shrine. Calls for redevelopment intensified after a stampede-like incident took place during the Janmashtami celebrations in 2022, which resulted in two fatalities. In Sept 2023, Allahabad high court directed the state govt to implement a corridor plan to manage crowds and ensure safety. Although the state said it engaged with all stakeholders, Shebaits and local residents have claimed they were excluded from discussions. On Monday, Agra's divisional commissioner Shailendra Kumar Singh, Mathura DM Chandra Prakesh Singh, Agra range DIG Shailesh Kumar Pandey and additional officials held a meeting with the stakeholders to seek a resolution. Shailendra Kumar Singh said, "The proposed corridor has been cleared by the SC. The locals have raised some issues, and we have reached out to them. In the issues related to the temple, we ensured that no change will be there to the customs and traditions of the temple. Shopkeepers had doubts related to compensation, and we cleared them. The streets in and around the temple are narrow and unsuitable for the influx of people who visit the temple daily, so this corridor will be beneficial for all the stakeholders. "

Mother's whereabouts ‘unknown' after detention by Assam police, son knocks on Supreme Court door

Monowara Bewa, whose son's Habeas Corpus petition the Supreme Court has agreed to hear next week, lives in Khagrabari village in Dhubri district with her family and is among several people who the Assam police have detained since May 23 in a crackdown against people declared foreigners by the state's Foreigners' Tribunals. Her son, 26-year-old Iunuch (Yunus) Ali, has alleged that she has been picked up for deportation, and her whereabouts since then are not known. Bewa was declared a foreigner by an FT in 2016 and placed in detention in Assam's Kokrajhar. She was released on bail in 2019 following the Supreme Court's directions to this effect for those who had completed three years in detention. The Gauhati High Court had upheld the FT order in 2017, and the family approached the Supreme Court through a Special Leave Petition the same year. While the Supreme Court has agreed to hear her son's petition, back in Dhubri, her family remains in the dark about her whereabouts since she was detained on May 24. 'That day, she got a call from the Gauripur police station asking her to report with her documents. Since she goes every month because of her bail conditions, we thought they needed her for something related to that. She and her son went around 5 pm. They were made to wait there until late at night, when a senior official came to take her away, saying he was following instructions from higher authorities. The next day, we went to the office of the border police SP in Dhubri, but the in-charge there said he did not know anything. It has been eight days, and we still don't know where she is,' said her nephew, Maminur Hussain (37). Bewa's neighbour, Jahanara Hussain (55), who is also a local women's leader who has been helping the family with the case, said that on Sunday, she received the link to a Facebook video that purportedly showed Bewa in Bangladesh alongside four others. 'It was circulated among people in the area on Sunday night. It is her in the video, but we still do not have any idea where she could be right now,' she said.

TN CB-CID unearths multi-crore Iridium Copper scam posing as RBI officials, six held

Chennai, June 3 (UNI) In a significant breakthrough, the Tamil Nadu Crime Branch-CID wing has unearthed a multi-crore Iridium Copper scam by the culprits posing as RBI officials and arrested six people in this connection. A CB-CID release here on Tuesday said those arrested included five from Tamil Nadu and one from Telangana and several incriminating materials were seized from them. It was a case of cheating of public by some groups across Tamil Nadu and neighbouring states by collecting unauthorized deposits claiming that several thousand crore rupees has been received from the central government through RBI for the sale of iridium copper. They also con them saying service fee has to be paid to RBI and commission has to be paid to higher officials of RBI to release the said amount. These scamsters assure exorbitant returns in the range of crores by showing fabricated RBI bonds to make the victims believe their scam. The scam came to light when a complaint was lodged by a civilian in February 2024 on the 'Sachet' website of Reserve Bank of India for lodging complaints against unauthorized deposit accepted by unincorporated bodies. Subsequently, a complaint was filed by RBI Assistant General Manager A.J. Kennedy in May 2024 to the Chennai Police Commissioner and the same was directed to the CBCID. After conducting a preliminary enquiry, a case has been registered in Salem OCU CBCID unit U/s 419, 465, 468, 471, 420 IPC and 66 D Information Technology Act 2000 r/w five Emblems and Name (Prevention of Improper use) Act, 1950 and taken up for investigation in March 2025. During investigation, the accused persons Nithyanandham, Chandra (both from Thanjavur district of Tamil Nadu) were arrested and remanded on May 28. Further investigations led to the arrest of four more accused Anbumani from Dharmapuri district, Muthusamy a native of Salem district, Kesavan also from Salem and Gadi Charla Kishore Kumar of of Telangana state. They were subsequently remanded in custody. The release said a gold-coloured metal, few forged documents, Cell phones with incriminating materials have been seized from the accused persons. Inquiries revealed that the accused have cheated many people across Tamil Nadu and in Andhra Pradesh. So far, around 20 victims from Chennai, Thanjavur, Coimbatore, Salem, Namakkal and Dharmapuri, have been identified and said to have been cheated of money to the tune of Rs 4.5 crores collectively by the accused persons. The scamsters induced victims to invest money in the allegedly secretly maintained central government Iridium trade scheme by showing forged credit certificates in the name of the depositors with RBI emblem. Thereafter, when the victims contacted them for the promised returns, the accused kept dodging them. After a point, they hired persons to pose as RBI officials and meet the victims in star hotels in Delhi or Mumbai and assure them of returns. Once this is done, they even go to the extent of creating a bank account and share credentials with the victims saying money will be deposited in this account. Investigation is going on to arrest remaining persons of this racket and to identify more victims. UNI GV 0630
