Asian shares post modest gain, dollar holds drop
NEW YORK: Asian shares edged up at the open as investors awaited news on trade negotiations between the US and China before taking on risky bets. A regional stock index climbed 0.4 per cent while equity-index futures for the US dipped 0.2 per cent. Shares in mainland China fluctuated at the open on their return from a holiday Monday (June 2). Hong Kong shares advanced, erasing yesterday's losses. Treasuries were steady in Asian trading on Tuesday and the dollar was little changed after hitting its lowest since 2023 in the last session. Oil extended its gains. Investors are keeping a close eye on the latest twists in the trade war after a slew of headlines Monday. The main focus is whether US President Donald Trump and China's Xi Jinping will hold a conversation to dial down the tensions, after the two countries accused each other of violating a trade agreement reached in May. China hasn't confirmed any decision for talks between the two presidents even as the US pushes for a dialogue. "We're clearly seeing a lot of volatility and investors want more visibility,' Massimiliano Bondurri, founder and chief executive officer of SGMC Capital in Singapore, said on Bloomberg TV. "It's normal that markets are actually going to be flip-flopping. You're going to see actually even intraday swings. Could this be something that stays with us? Yes, it could.' Trump has long said that direct talks with Xi were the only way to resolve differences between the nations, but the Chinese leader has been reluctant to get on the phone with his American counterpart - preferring that advisers negotiate key issues. The last known conversation between Trump and Xi took place in January before the US president's inauguration. Top Trump economic adviser Kevin Hassett signaled Sunday the White House was anticipating a call this week with the Chinese leader. Meanwhile, Japan's top trade negotiator Ryosei Akazawa is considering returning to the US for another round of trade negotiations this week as expectations mount for a deal as early as this month. "We continue to expect market volatility as investors digest fresh tariff headlines and incoming US economic data,' said Ulrike Hoffmann-Burchardi at UBS Global Wealth Management. "Fiscal worries remain, and geopolitical tensions are heating up.' Trump worked the phones Monday and took to social media to try to sway Republican holdouts on his multi-trillion dollar tax bill, encountering conflicting demands from GOP senators even as he urged them to move swiftly. The legislation, which last month passed the House by one vote, faces opposition from both moderates and ultra-conservatives in the Senate, where Trump can afford to lose no more than three votes. In Japan, attention will once again shift to a debt market sale Tuesday that may ramp up pressure on the government to adjust its borrowing plans and calm investor nerves. Hot on the heels of auctions last month that exposed a lack of demand, the finance ministry will sell ¥2.6 trillion (US$18 billion) of ten-year notes. In geopolitics, Russia and Ukraine wrapped up a second round of talks in Istanbul that failed to bring the two sides closer to ending the war, but laid the groundwork for a new exchange of prisoners. - Bloomberg

South Korean delivery workers allowed rare pause in services to vote in snap election
FILE PHOTO: Delivery trucks for e-commerce retailer Coupang leave a distribution centre in Seoul, South Korea, June 21, 2018. Picture taken June 21, 2018. REUTERS/Josh Smith/File Photo SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korean e-commerce and courier companies agreed to a rare halt of their delivery services on Tuesday to allow busy delivery workers time to cast their ballot in the country's snap presidential election after pressure from unions and activists. Asia's fourth-largest economy has a highly tuned e-commerce sector and South Koreans typically rely on couriers to deliver everything from fresh food to clothing, often in a matter of hours, with the service normally available throughout the year. South Korea's biggest e-commerce platform Coupang, agreed to halt express deliveries for the first time since it launched in 2014, joining other local delivery services such as CJ Logistics and Hanjin Logistics. "Rocket delivery will be paused during the day on June 3," New York-listed Coupang said in a notice on its platform, pausing deliveries between 7 a.m. and 8 p.m. Most of the tens of thousands of delivery workers in South Korea are considered gig workers or self-employed and do not enjoy the same legal protections as permanent employees. The job is also notorious for long working hours and a heavy workload, with couriers complaining they have seen few of the benefits from an improvement in labour rights in other sectors. The agreement to temporarily halt services during the polls, was positively received by some workers. "I welcome the decision. But on the other hand, it is a little regrettable that night drivers cannot rest," said Cho Shin-hwan, a Coupang courier, who had to work on past elections. Nearly 8 in 10 eligible voters in South Korea voted in the last presidential election in 2022, a far higher turnout than recent elections held in other democracies such as the United States and Japan. Presidential election days are designated as a national holiday in South Korea to encourage workers to vote, with polls for the snap election staying open between 6 a.m. (Monday 2100 GMT) and 8 p.m. (1100 GMT) on Tuesday. "Those affected worked hard to achieve this," said Kim Eun-jung, Deputy Secretary General at the People's Solidarity for Participatory Democracy, a non-governmental body, highlighting how delivery workers were excluded from current labour protection laws. The June 3 presidential election was called after the Constitutional Court ousted president Yoon Suk Yeol earlier this year for his short-lived imposition of martial law on December 3. Selangor Umno Youth urges Tengku Zafrul to step down from minister's post
SHAH ALAM: Selangor Umno Youth has described Tengku Datuk Seri Zafrul Tengku Abdul Aziz's decision to resign from Umno and join PKR while remaining in Cabinet as irresponsible and disappointing, Sinar Harian reports. Its leader, Datuk Mohd Imran Tamrin, said that such an action should not be emulated and does not set a good precedent in the country's political practices, the Malay language daily reported. "His position in the Cabinet was previously based on his capacity as a senior Umno leader. When he leaves the party and joins PKR, he should also step down from his government position," he told Sinar Harian. Selangor Umno Youth also urged the Umno leadership to maintain the number of ministers and deputy ministers from the party in the unity government Cabinet. "We want the number of ministers (seven) and deputy ministers (five) from Umno to be retained. "This is important to maintain the party's voice in the government," Imran stressed further in a press conference late Monday (June 2) night. Previously, it was reported that Tengku Zafrul had submitted his resignation letter from Umno to join PKR. He also confirmed that the resignation letters as a member of the Umno supreme council, Kota Raja Umno chief and Umno member have been submitted to the party leadership. In addition, Tengku Zafrul confirmed that he had expressed his intention to join PKR to its president Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim and secretary-general Fuziah Salleh. Meanwhile, Tengku Zafrul also expressed his gratitude to Umno president Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi, and fellow party members for their support and encouragement throughout his involvement in Umno.
