The moon and Venus kick off Memorial Day weekend with a lovely conjunction early on May 23

Should your local weather forecast suggest that Friday morning — the start of the Memorial Day Holiday Weekend — will be fair and clear, it will be well worth setting your alarm clock to awaken you about 90 minutes before the sun comes up. If you head outside at that early hour and if you have a clear and unobstructed view toward the east, you will be treated to a lovely pairing of the two brightest objects in the night sky.
You'll immediately notice the crescent moon; appearing slender and sliver, its disk will be illuminated just 16 percent by sunlight. And hovering to the lower left of the lunar crescent will be the planet Venus, shining like a brilliant silvery-white celestial lantern of magnitude -4.5. The two objects will be separated by a rather wide gap: roughly 7 degrees, which is approximately equal to three-quarters of the apparent width of your fist held at arm's length.
Certainly, this won't be an exceptionally close approach between these two objects but their great brilliance makes them an eye-catching sight in the early morning sky.
Of course, what we are seeing is an illusion of perspective. On this particular morning, the moon is 225,700 miles (363,300 km) from Earth, while Venus is 259 times more distant at 58.5 million miles (94.1 million km). Venus will arrive at its greatest western elongation — its greatest angular distance west of the sun — on June 1. But it actually will slowly get higher in the eastern morning sky right on through the first half of the summer. Currently it's rising just shy of two hours before the sun, but by the third week of July that will have increased to three hours.

And Venus will shine at nearly the same brilliance for a number of mornings to come.
Venus currently rises in the east at 3:35 a.m. local daylight time. The eerie, low glimmering of Venus is a harbinger of daybreak, which begins exactly at that same time. In a telescope, Venus's illuminated portion has fattened to 45-percent; almost half full.
And once you know where Venus is relative to the moon, see if you can keep track of it after the sun has come up. You should have no problem glimpsing it in the daytime; a tiny white speck against the blue sky.
Incidentally, on Friday while you're admiring Venus and the moon, take a moment to also look for Saturn. You'll readily see it shining complacently, approximately 10 degrees ("one fist") to the right of the crescent moon.
You might recall how there was considerable ballyhoo over a recent formation between the moon, Venus and Saturn on April 25th, stating that it would resemble a smiley face in the dawn sky that morning. But what many failed to take into account was that all three objects would be very low in the eastern sky and deeply embedded in the bright dawn twilight.
Those who awoke early that morning could easily see Venus thanks to its great brilliance, but had a bit more difficulty seeing the smile created by the crescent moon, only 9 percent illuminated. But unless you had binoculars, you may have missed out on seeing Saturn, because it was likely swamped by the growing light of the approaching sunrise.
However, you'll have another chance at seeing all three objects on Friday morning, and this time the task will be much easier. For one thing, all three will rise earlier and appear higher against a darker backdrop of the eastern sky. The lunar crescent will be 7 percent wider compared to last month and unlike last month, Saturn should be readily seen with your unaided eyes.
Keep in mind that it will appear much dimmer than Venus — only 1/191 as bright. Shining at magnitude +1.2, it's almost the dimmest Saturn ever gets. The reason is that its nearly edge-on rings will contribute almost no light. But in spite of this, you should not have any problems sighting Saturn's sedate yellow-white glow against the early light of dawn.

What makes it special isn't just its composition, but the presence of a constant haze. This haze is made up of tiny particles, and if the data from James Webb is correct, it does more than just drift around in the cold. Normally, planetary atmospheres manage temperature through movement and properties of gas molecules, as I mentioned before. But Pluto cools itself differently. As sunlight hits the planet, the haze particles absorb energy and rise. When they cool, they sink again. This up-and-down cycle helps manage the planet's heat, keeping the atmosphere in a delicate balance. No other world cools itself this way, as far as we know. The idea is kind of crazy, but it also isn't unprecedented. Researchers actually proposed it a few years ago, before we had any proof. That's where James Webb comes in. Recent observations focused on Pluto using mid-infrared wavelengths. The telescope detected the exact type of thermal signals that scientists had predicted. The haze in Pluto's atmosphere was indeed radiating heat, just as the theory suggested it would. But these findings tell us more than how Pluto cools itself. They will also force scientists to rethink what's possible for other hazy worlds. Moons like Titan and Triton, for instance, also have nitrogen-heavy atmospheres and thick hazes. They could be managing their heat in similar ways. There's also a deeper link to our own planet. Researchers say Earth's early atmosphere may have looked more like Pluto's, filled with nitrogen and hydrocarbons. By studying how Pluto's haze behaves, researchers might uncover clues about how conditions to support life first formed here on Earth. June's strawberry moon will be unlike any you've seen in years: When to see it in California
June 2025's full moon is coming to a sky near you in the early morning hours of June 11. And while all June full moons ride low in the sky, spring's final full moon this year will be the lowest full moon in almost 20 years. The strawberry moon will rise over California on the evening of Tuesday, June 10, and will shine into Wednesday morning, a "sight that can be seen around the world," said Brian Lada, an AccuWeather meteorologist. June's full moon is called the strawberry moon because it signaled to some Native American tribes that it was the time of year to gather ripening wild strawberries, according to the Old Farmer's Almanac. Notably, this year's strawberry moon could actually have a reddish glow, due to how low it will sit in the sky and the haze from wildfires. June's full moon will reach peak illumination on June 11, 2025, at 12:44 a.m. PT, the Almanac said. But it will look plenty full as it rises the evening before, June 10. The strawberry moon is the most colorful of the year because it takes a low, shallow path across the sky, said Bob Bonadurer, director of the Milwaukee Public Museum's planetarium. The June full moon's arc across the sky means moonlight must travel through more of the Earth's atmosphere, which can give it a colorful tint. "So there's a chance it will actually look a little bit reddish or pink, and, and so that may also be part of the origin of the name," Chris Palma, professor of astronomy and astrophysics at Penn State University, told AccuWeather. Smoke in the atmosphere from Canadian wildfires could also act to create a colorful moon. According to EarthSky, the moon will the lowest in the sky that it's been since 2006. "That's because we're in the midst of a major lunar standstill," which has to do with the moon's orbit around the Earth. "It's all about the inclination of the moon's orbit, which undergoes an 18.6-year cycle," noted EarthSky's John Jardine Goss. "The cycle happens because the moon's orbit is being slowly dragged around – mostly due to the pull of the sun – every 18.6 years." This year's major lunar standstill culminated in January 2025. And we're still close enough to it that the standstill is affecting the path of this June full moon, EarthSky said. Our planet's oxygen levels will drop, and there's no way to stop it

Sure, there's the threat of climate change and the fact that sea levels are rising around the world. But that's not what we're talking about. Instead, our planet's impending doom is actually set to happen billions of years from now, long after we're all gone, when the oxygen levels drop and life as we know it ceases to exist. When this change occurs, it's going to happen pretty rapidly, a study published a few years ago claims. It will be similar to the Great Oxidation Event (GOE) that happened over 2.4 billion years ago. Back then, oxygen flooded the Earth's atmosphere, giving birth to life as we know it today, or at least its earliest evolutionary forms. We've seen other planets around us that appear to have been stripped of their oxygen, like Mars and Venus. And many argue that Earth is set to see a similar future at some point down the line. Of course, the factors resulting in dropping oxygen levels are complex. Not only do we have natural global warming to blame, but human-driven climate change could also play a large role in the end of life on Earth as we know it. Models suggest that Earth's oxygen levels could drop as low as those of Archean Earth, when microbial life was the only life to be found on our little blue and green planet. Those levels of oxygen would, obviously, not be ideal for people or animals that require oxygen to breathe. Of course, there is always the chance that we manage to get off Earth and settle somewhere else before Earth becomes uninhabitable, but if we don't, and humans are still alive billions of years from now, then it will be the end of the road. Overall, Earth's future billions of years from now is looking pretty bleak. Scientists estimate that the sun will explode, effectively ending life in our solar system some 2 billion years from now. Before that happens, life on Earth will change drastically, as oxygen levels are expected to drop almost a million times lower than today, researchers told New Scientist. Luckily, the end of the world isn't the most pressing problem we have to face at the moment, though there are arguments about how we could possibly delay the inevitable. Even if we did, there's not really anything we could do about it but hope Elon Musk and NASA's plan to put humans on Mars in the 2030s works out.
