First look: Royal Caribbean's Star of the Seas begins sea trials – here's everything we know so far

Independent21-05-2025

Royal Caribbean's latest Icon class cruise ship has begun sea trials as it prepares to launch this summer.
The brand's newest vessel, Star of the Seas, is due to start hosting passengers from August 2025 on Caribbean sailings.
The 5,610-capacity ship has touched water for the first time after it entered the sea trials phase of its construction in Turku, Finland.
Over 11 days, more than 2,000 experts are testing everything from how the ship moves through the open water to engine performance and how it copes under pressure.
The Royal Caribbean ship is being tested at speeds of up to 25 knots before entering the final phase of construction at the Meyer Turku shipyard in Turku.
Star of the Seas' maiden voyage is scheduled for 31 August around the western Caribbean for a week, departing from Port Canaveral, Florida. Cruise fares start at £1,289 per person.
There are also shorter showcase sailings beforehand, including a three-night round-trip from Port Canaveral on 20 August that visits Royal Caribbean's private island, CocoCay, in the Bahamas, with fares starting from £796 per person.
The vessel is the sister ship to Icon of the Seas, currently the world's largest cruise ship.
With a gross tonnage of 248,633, Star of the Seas will be the same size as Icon.
Passengers will find similar features to Icon of the Seas, such as an ice-rink, rock climbing wall, giant waterparks and slides on board, as well as 40 bars and restaurants to choose from. These include the Surfside neighbourhood, which features pools and arcades for the kids and bars for the adults.
The ship is welcoming three new foodstands to its AquaDome Market, serving smoky pulled pork and beef brisket, Southeast Asian regional favourites such as pad thai and panang curry and South American staples including empanadas and arepas.
There will also be a refreshed speciality Lincoln Park Supper Club on board, serving intimate meals with live entertainment on a 1930s Chicago-inspired theme.
In the evening, passengers can enjoy the acrobatic Torque show in the AquaDome and watch the Back to the Future Musical in the Royal Theatre.
You may even meet Star's on-board chief dog officer (CDO), Sailor, who lives on the ship.

NFL fans demand their teams sign female flag football star

A women's flag football star has caught the attention of NFL fans after showing off her hugely impressive arm strength. Ava Hanson, the starting quarterback for Wellington High School's flag football team, left NFL fanbases begging for her to sign after leaving them stunned with her display at the Florida state championships last month. In a video posted by user legendaryproductions727 on TikTok, Hanson can be seen dropping back before delivering a roughly 40-yard bomb right in stride to a receiver. The quarterback's Wellington teammate, Avery Schroeder, then scampered into the end zone as the crowd went wild. The impressive play has earned 2.5million views on TikTok - and has plenty of NFL fans asking their team to sign the talented passer. 'I've seen enough welcome to the Atlanta falcons blonde QB,' one wrote. ''She busy? Dolphins need a new QB,' a second added. 'On behalf of the Dallas Cowboys we'd like to welcome you and discuss possible contractual terms,' a third chimed in. And a fourth said: 'Both of York NOW!!!' While fans of those teams may not get their wish, it's possible that they could see the star passer at the upcoming Olympics. Flag football will be part of the Games for the first time in 2028 when they take place in LA. And the sport will feature both men's and women's divisions. However, before any shot at the Olympic stage, Hanson, a senior at the Palm Beach County school, is set to take her impressive skills to the collegiate level. In April, Hanson committed to playing for the Hendrix Warriors - a private liberal arts college in Conway, Arkansas - under head coach Doug Peterson. She had also attracted offers from Daytona State College, University of Mount Olive in North Carolina, and Midland University in Nebraska. The gunslinger threw for 3694 yards and 59 touchdowns for Wellington throughout this past season. Hanson and Wellington narrowly missed out on claiming glory at the state championships, which were held at the Tampa Bay Buccaneers' AdventHealth Training Center on May 8-10. They were narrowly beaten in the 4A final by the Alonso Ravens - a Tampa area school - in a devastating 21-20 overtime defeat.

King visits London market after braving summer showers

Charles toured Old Spitalfields Market after visiting the nearby South by SouthWest London (SXSW London) festival, where he was welcomed by the Kingdom Choir, who performed at the Duke and Duchess of Sussex's wedding. The market on Thursdays features stalls selling vintage items, and Charles perused the silverware, old photos and arts and crafts from places like Indonesia and Persia. Shoppers were kept back but Charles shook hands with many of the stallholders, including Paul Brimmer, not part of the royal tour, who told the King: 'I've got a stall with watches, I'll give you a special discount,' then added: 'You don't carry cash.' Peter Filosidis's table was covered in knick-knacks and Charles asked him where he found the items. Mr Filosidis said afterwards: 'It was amazing to meet the King. It's the King for god's sake, it's the King.' He said he had seen him once or twice at the opera, which the antique hunter attended regularly. Earlier Charles walked from the main SXSW London site at the Truman Brewery in the rain, holding an umbrella, to the crypt of Christ Church, Spitalfields, the venue for the SXSW exhibition Beautiful Collisions, showcasing artists whose work draws on their Caribbean heritage. Denzil Forrester, one of five artists featured, discussed his painting of figures with the King and told him he found inspiration sketching in clubs till 5am. 'Are you sure? You should be in bed,' quipped the King. The six-day SXSW London is a culture, technology and creativity festival being held in Shoreditch, east London. It is the first time the event, which began in Austin, Texas, US, has been held in Europe. It showcases the future of the creative industries, supporting emerging artists and innovative projects, and features a number of discussions, exhibitions and networking events. Deputy prime minister Angela Rayner was among those who greeted the King when he arrived, after she had appeared earlier at the festival speaking about sustainable communities. Other speakers during the six-day festival have included former prime ministers Sir Tony Blair and Lord David Cameron, London Mayor Sir Sadiq Khan and actor Idris Elba, speaking to delegates on a range of issues from AI to healthcare and creativity in communities. Charles also toured the immersive art installation Grounding, where artist Damien Roach has used AI and data to create modern landscape images of mountains, woodland scenes or the sun's corona during a total eclipse.
