Former caddie-turned-dentist eyes silver lining after rough U.S. Open

Reuters20 hours ago

OAKMONT, Pennsylvania, June 12 (Reuters) - Former Oakmont caddie-turned-dentist Matt Vogt, who qualified for the U.S. Open last week, could have used some laughing gas after a rough start to the year's third major on Thursday but still walked away thankful for all he had accomplished.
The 34-year-old amateur, who grew up outside Pittsburgh and caddied at Oakmont where he also got to play on Monday nights, had the honour of hitting the first shot of the U.S. Open where he went on to card a 12-over-par 82.
"Honestly, I came in with such optimism for this golf course, but it is so hard. It's just so, so hard," said Vogt. "I'd say in the moment you feel like you get punched in the face but, ultimately, yeah, I'd say it was fun."
Vogt, playing on a golf course considered to be one of the toughest in the world and where many top players also struggled on Thursday, made par on his first two holes before his round started to unravel.
By the time he reached the turn Vogt had two bogeys and a pair of double-bogeys on his card. He added four more bogeys on the back nine before capping his day with a double-bogey.
"You just get behind the eight ball here, and honestly your head starts spinning," said Vogt. "That's what it feels like, your head starts spinning out here, and it just gets away from you."
Vogt, who will need a special second round if he hopes to make the cut, may have walked away from Oakmont on Thursday feeling a bit numb but knows that in the future he will look back on this most incredible week with pride.
"For me to just say it's just another golf tournament would be lying to myself," said Vogt. "Down the road there will definitely be a lot of things to take from today.
"I mean, how could any other golf tournament feel more like this or more full of pressure like this? I mean, it's the U.S. Open. I'm trying to have a silver lining on shooting 82."

Reports: Rays acquire RHP Forrest Whitley from Astros

June 13 - The Tampa Bay Rays acquired right-hander Forrest Whitley from the Houston Astros in exchange for cash considerations, multiple media outlets reported Friday. Whitley, once a top-10 prospect in baseball, was designated for assignment by the Astros on Sunday. Houston selected him with the No. 17 pick of the 2016 MLB Draft out of high school in San Antonio and gave him a $3.148 million signing bonus, but he failed to reached expectations. Now 27, he didn't debut in Houston until the 2024 season and made three relief appearances, giving up no earned runs in 3 1/3 innings. This season, Whitley appeared in five games for Houston, with opponents scoring 10 earned runs on nine hits and six walks in 7 1/3 innings. He has no decisions with a 12.27 ERA. In 117 minor league appearances (65 starts) he had a 17-20 record with a 4.75 ERA over 306 2/3 innings. He struck out 421 batters and walked 160. --Field Level Media

Sam Burns succeeds where others fail in the second round of US Open

Sam Burns fired himself into US Open contention at the halfway point after taming Oakmont. The 2023 Ryder Cup player carded a brilliant five-under-par 65 to move to three-under and become the clubhouse leader after the morning wave of second rounds. He was one shot behind overnight leader JJ Spaun, who began his round at lunchtime on Friday. The brutal Oakmont course, with punishing rough and treacherous greens, has chewed up and spat out some of the world's best players so far, but Burns was able to thrive. Starting at two over after Thursday's opening round, he produced a blemish-free 31 with four birdies to make the turn at two under. He dropped a shot at the first hole, his 10th of the day, but recovered with birdies at the second and fourth before draining a 22-foot putt to save par. World number one Scott Scheffler is back at four-over after a 71, which consisted of four birdies and five bogeys and may be one of the better rounds of the day. Brooks Koepka was sitting at two under overnight but dropped down to two over after a difficult second nine holes saw him hit five bogeys. Jon Rahm was another player who endured a torrid time, especially on the greens, as he tumbled down the leaderboard after a five-over-par 75. 'Honestly, I'm too annoyed and too mad right now to think about any perspective,' the Spaniard said. 'Very few rounds of golf I played in my life where I think I hit good putts and they didn't sniff the hole, so it's frustrating.' Indeed, the terrifying course in Pennsylvania was playing even tougher on Friday, with just two of the players who have completed two rounds sitting under par. Norway's Victor Hovland joins Burns in the red after he carded a two-under-par 68 to sit one under overall. Hovland was at three under with four holes to play but two dropped shots, at the sixth and eighth holes, proved costly.

Fever star Caitlin Clark (quad) to return after missing five games

June 13 - Indiana Fever star guard Caitlin Clark will return to the lineup on Saturday afternoon in Indianapolis against the 9-0 New York Liberty, the team said Friday. Clark, 23, missed the past five games with a left quad strain sustained during the Fever's previous meeting with the defending champion Liberty on May 24. Indiana went 2-3 without Clark, the 2024 WNBA Rookie of the Year who is averaging 19.0 points, 9.3 assists and 6.0 rebounds in four games this season. Clark posted a double-double with 18 points and 10 assists in last month's 90-88 loss to New York. The No. 1 overall pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft, Clark earned All-Star and All-WNBA honors in 2024 and set a league record with 337 assists while playing all 40 games. Barring a setback, Fever coach Stephanie White told reporters Friday that guard Sophie Cunningham is also likely to be available on Saturday. She has played only four games this season due to an ankle injury. --Field Level Media
