Mount Etna in Italy spews ash, lava intensely
SICILY (Italy): Mount Etna, one of the most active volcanoes in southern Italy, erupted overnight, spewing large amounts of ash and lava, Anadolu Ajansi (AA) reported, citing local media on Tuesday.
The eruption, which began from the Southeast Crater, involved frequent and intense explosions, releasing two small lava flows directed toward the south and east, Catania Today reported.
An ash plume was also observed, drifting southeast and depositing volcanic ash on the nearby town of Zafferana Etnea.
The Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation (VONA) issued by INGV has since been downgraded to 'green,' the lowest alert level.
Authorities confirmed that the eruption had no effect on operations at Catania's Vincenzo Bellini International Airport.
Located on the island of Sicily, Etna is the highest active volcano in continental Europe at around 3,300 meters.
This latest eruption marks the 13th recorded volcanic activity in recent months.
Intense volcanic activity was observed at Mount Etna in February and April of this year.

Singapore Airlines Group offers job lifeline to 300 Jetstar Asia staff ahead of July 31 shutdown
SINGAPORE, June 14 — The Singapore Airlines (SIA) Group will provide employment opportunities across its carriers for affected Jetstar Asia employees, following news of the budget airline's closure on July 31. In a statement issued yesterday, an SIA spokesman said, 'Our aim is to support as many affected staff as possible in continuing their careers within the aviation sector.' The group is offering roles for about 100 pilots and 200 cabin crew members. Jetstar Asia, which announced its impending closure on June 11, cited rising operational costs — including supplier fees, airport charges and intensifying competition — as reasons behind the decision. Over 500 employees are expected to be impacted. The airline has pledged redundancy benefits and employment support services for those affected. Its parent company, Qantas, has also said it is working to find job placements within the group and across other regional airlines. Since June 11, SIA Group has been collaborating with Jetstar Asia to explore ways to absorb some of its staff. Representatives from SIA and its low-cost arm Scoot will be stationed at Jetstar Asia's office from June 17 to 19 to meet with interested employees and share information on available roles. 'We understand that this is a time of uncertainty, and are committed to providing the necessary support to help make the recruitment and onboarding process as smooth as possible,' said the SIA spokesman, adding that the group values the experience Jetstar Asia's staff bring. Here are the facts about the airline's long history: Founded in 1932 Air India was started by entrepreneur JRD Tata in 1932, before being taken over by the Indian government in 1953. Under the government, years of mismanagement and rising competition led to ballooning debts at the carrier. Tata Group took over the airline's operations in a US$2.2 billion deal in 2022, and has since tried to revive its fortunes. Fleet, routes Air India currently flies to 43 domestic and 41 international destinations. As of May, it operates 191 aircraft, a mix of narrow- and wide-body models from both Airbus and Boeing.
