Temu car parts slammed as unsafe for Australia

A booming online marketplace is fuelling a dangerous new trend in backyard car repairs - and no one really seems to be watching.
Temu, The Chinese mega-platform which offers countless products for less than the cost of a coffee, is targeting Aussie car owners with bargain-priced tools and vehicle components.
While the site claims to offer value, car makers say the low-cost parts pose 'a significant safety risk'.
From brake pad spreaders and panel clamps to unbranded fasteners, even engine components, the app sells an expanding range of vehicle hardware with little to no information on where they were manufactured, whether they've been safety tested in Australia, or if they comply with any Australian Design Rules (ADRs) and roadworthiness standards.
In the same way that Chinese car manufacturers have pivoted to Australia after facing regulatory hurdles in Europe, parts suppliers have turned to new markets to offload vehicle components.
Despite the proliferation of parts entering the country, most government agencies approached by News Corp Australia simply passed the buck.
Federal agencies said they were 'monitoring' the situation or claimed responsibility for safety standards lay with state departments.
Meanwhile, state departments claim they only uphold standards for new vehicles entering the country while modifcations made after that arrival are the responsibility of owners and mechanics.
CAR BRANDS LEFT STUNNED BY TEMU'S MOVE
While the buck-passing continues, so too does the flood of parts entering the country, with Temu in particular looking to actively promote their part in the process.
Some products are marketed as 'universally applicable' but experts say the parts are often poor quality imitations.
Many parts, such as vehicle cooling systems, are specific to indindividual vehicles and should only be installed by qualified experts.
Installing an unknown component without precise specifications, can lead to system failures, overheating or engine damage.

Several automotive products listed on the site appear to mimic genuine parts from established car manufacturers by copying brand names and genuine part numbers.
For example, a listing titled 'For Honda, VTEC Solenoid Car Heat Shield Spool Gasket' seems genuine and made for, or by, Honda on first impression.
It even includes Honda's manufacturer part number.

However, the PDF manual containing basic installation information, fails to offer any clarity on the part's compatibility or origin.
Further investigation revealed the origin as 'Zhejiang, China' with no official affiliation to Honda disclosed.
Zhejiang is known as a manufacturing hub in China, while the area is home to reputable manufacturers, it also has numerous small-scale factories that may not adhere to international quality standards.
On the genuine Honda Parts Connection website, the same part is listed at approximately $268, much higher than the $45 on Temu.
Honda Australia said it could not guarantee that the product advertised is a genuine Honda part.
'While the images depict a Honda part number, Honda Australia cannot confirm the authenticity of a part advertised based on representations from a third party suppler/retailer,' a Honda spokeswoman said.
'To ensure ongoing vehicle reliability and safety, Honda Australia strongly recommends using Genuine parts sourced through a Honda Centre.'

SOCIAL MEDIA FUELLING MARKET FOR CHEAP PARTS
Temu's expansion into Australia's automotive parts market has been backed by YouTube and Instagram influencers who receive free products and discount codes in exchange for showcasing installation tutorials to their followers.
In one example, a YouTube creator showcased how he realigned the panels of a heavily damaged Nissan Patrol using a $13 clamp from Temu paired with a winch.

'This cost me a grand total of $13 and something cents, and she's heavy,' he said.
Nissan Australia was shocked by the video.
'Anything structural or panel wise will definitely impact the safety and operation of the vehicle, we already have challenges with imported and counterfeit parts which are not designed for vehicles compliant with ADR rules and our Australian safety ratings. Other parts also can lead to issues, such as something as simple as clamps and hoses not doing the job they are designed to do and causing leaks, pressure loss etc which can lead to extreme safety risks or engine malfunction,' a Nissan spokeswoman said.
'The use of non-genuine parts, particularly those not engineered and tested to meet Australian safety standards, poses a significant safety risk to both the driver and other road users.'
Another creator, Fink & Co, posted a video 'TEMU car parts…we test it out', showing car enthusiasts unboxing a haul of budget car parts.
The video shows items ranging from jumper cable clamps and wrenches to steering wheels, gear knobs, decals and drill bits.
Others showed the installation of plastic sound-deadening clips and bonnet fasteners for less than $3, a process that, in the hands of a professional, would normally involve OEM parts and proper torque tools.
The parts are even finding their way to reputable workshops.
One Queensland-based mechanic, ABD Automotive, known for specialising in Fords, posted a YouTube video 'Ford Ranger Temu Modifications' documenting the use of Temu products on a Ranger.
The video shows the installation of low cost products, such as. tow receiver, strut kit, wheel nuts and wiper blades.
ABD Automotive included affiliated links and discount codes for Temu.
AGENCIES ARE AWARE BUT WHO IS RESPONSIBLE?
The Federal Chamber of Automotive Industries (FCAI) is aware of the trend and is concerned.
'The proliferation of low-cost, offshore-sourced automotive parts that lack assurance of compliance with Australian Design Rules poses a direct threat to vehicle safety and consumer protection.' a FCAI spokesperson said.
The FCAI stated ' The risks of non-genuine parts are significant. Parallel, salvaged, counterfeit or low-quality aftermarket components are not tested or approved by the vehicle's original manufacturer. Non-genuine parts can compromise the vehicle's safety, performance and reliability.'

The FCAI also warned that using such parts could void warranties or insurance claims and undermine the original safety rating of the vehicle.
The FCAI works closely with the Australian Border Force, which acknowledges the threat posed by counterfeit car parts entering the country.
'The ABF conducts risk-based, intelligence led targeting to identify and seize counterfeit goods and identify dishonest traders, which include companies and individual importers seeking to exploit global trade volumes and economic interconnectivity to falsify the origin, classification, quantity and value of goods,' a ABF spokesperson said.

The ABF works closely with rights holders to target shipments of infringing goods and has a dedicated service for reporting suspicious trade activity, known as Border Watch.
However, counterfeiters have been more sophisticated and organised.
Most counterfeit car parts and accessories are either falsely declared on import documentation or concealed with other goods through international mail.
Some counterfeit car parts and accessories come in counterfeit packaging.
Recent examples have included counterfeit oil filters that do not filter oil, wheel rims that shatter in low-speed pothole impacts, spark plugs capable of causing massive engine damage, and cabin air filters, struct spacers, shock absorbers and other car accessories.
In Australia the sale of car components is governed by national and state rules, including Australian Design Rules (ADRs), customs import restriction and safety standards are enforced by the Department of Infrastructure and, in some cases, the ACCC.
A spokesperson for the ACCC told News Corp Australia that overseas sellers targeting Aussies online must comply with Australian Consumer Law.
That means parts must be fit for purpose, safe, durable, and free from defects.
'Under the ACL consumers receive automatic rights, called consumer guarantees, when they purchase goods or services,' a ACCC spokesperson said.
'If a business fails to meet these guarantees, consumers have a right to a remedy. The remedy businesses should provide will depend on the circumstances, but can include a refund, a repair or replacement.'
'If a business finds that a product they supply is unsafe, we expect it to follow our guidelines and initiate a recall voluntarily to remove it from the market.'

ACCC noted that the The Department of Infrastructure, Transport, Regional Development, Communications and the Arts is responsible for regulating the safety of new road vehicles supplied in Australia, and certain approved road vehicle components.
However, when speaking with the Department of Infrastructure it says it's only responsible for the first import and sale of vehicles, not what happens after.
'Modifications and repairs to vehicles after first provision are not regulated under the Road Vehicle Standards Act 2018, they fall under the jurisdiction of the state or territory regulators,' a Department of Transport spokesperson said.
In Victoria, the Department of Transport and Planning said responsibility lies with drivers and repairers.
'All vehicles travelling on Victoria's roads must comply with standards for registration - and continue to do so after repairs are undertaken,' a Department of Transport spokesperson said.
'It is the responsibility of all drivers to ensure their vehicle is roadworthy at all times to keep themselves and other road users safe.'
The department confirmed that replacement or aftermarket parts need to meet relevant standards, and must be installed in a way that does not affect compliance with Australian Design Rules (ADRs).
Failure to do so could result in an unsafe vehicle or illegal and potentially void insurance.
In NSW, Transport NSW said all aftermarket parts must meet 'base Australian Standards' but quickly passed the query to NSW Fair Trading.
NSW Fair Trading said it does not regulate parts and only oversees mechanic licensing.
'We do not regulate parts, nor do we play any role in safety inspections other than the regulation of the licence of the mechanic,' a NSW Fair Trading spokesperson said.
However NSW Fair Trading encourages consumers to be cautious when buying parts.
'Consumers are encouraged to buy genuine parts if possible or purchase from reputable aftermarket retailers to ensure the parts are of appropriate quality, safety, fit for purpose, and fitted by a licensed vehicle repairer.' a NSW Fair Trade spokesperson said.
'Customers should research traders who offer discounts on parts by checking online reviews and be wary of suppliers offering goods at discount prices.'

But concerns around counterfeit car products are not new.
In 2016, the FCAI revealed that Chinese authorities had seized more than 33,000 counterfeit Toyota and Lexus parts, including airbags, brake components, cables, filters and seals.
The parts were packaged in fake Toyota and Lexus boxes, and were intended for Australia.
In response, the FCAI launched the 'Genuine is Best' campaign, which warned of the growing risk posed by imported counterfeit components.
EXPERTS CALL FOR ACTION
Australasian College of Road Safety (ACRS) chief executive officer Ingrid Johnston expressed concern and agreed that there needs to be stronger oversight.
'Anything that is substandard and impacts safety outcomes is a concern to the road safety community,' she said.
It's not the first time Temu's operations have come under scrutiny.
Last year in Australia, consumer advocacy group CHOICE conducted an investigation in May 2024, purchasing 15 random coin and button battery-operated products from Temu.
Alarmingly, every product tested failed at least one requirement for mandatory Australian button battery regulations.
In October 2024, CHOICE released a list of 15 Temu products that failed to meet Australian safety standards.
But despite failing to meet Australian standards, the products remained available for purchase.
Internationally, in October 2024, the European Commission launched a formal investigation into the platform under the Digital Service Act (DSA).
This probe was initiated due to suspicions that Temu was failing to prevent the sale of illegal products, including counterfeit items, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and toys.
The complaint also outlined the use of 'dark patterns' and addictive design features.
While the EU investigation placed Temu under scrutiny, in Australia experts are warning that substandard or counterfeit car parts could have life-threatening consequences, not just for drivers but for everyone on the road.
So the question remains: how are potentially dangerous counterfeit car parts still being sold so easily to Australians through platforms like Temu?
Australians are advised to avoid purchasing from unofficial websites or sources and to scrutinise products bought overseas to prevent bringing fake goods into the country.
Consumers can report an unsafe product to the supplier directly and to the ACCC via the ACCC website.

Dexus sees strong demand for prime office space Melbourne's heritage building Invicta House reopens after major revamp Private lender Zagga backs STRE's refurbishment As one of the biggest landlords in Australia, Dexus (ASX:DXS) has its finger on the pulse of the nation's commercial property scene. In its latest March quarter update, Dexus reported rising occupancy, falling leasing incentives, and a shift back to premium CBD space. The company said it's proof that 'flight to quality' is alive and kicking. Dexus' office occupancy sits at 93.2%, well above the 86.3% market average, while industrial assets are even tighter at 95.7%. And crucially, Dexus says it's collecting every cent of rent. While some landlords are still tossing in sweeteners to fill space, Dexus says it no longer needs to dangle the carrot, especially in towers like Sydney's One Farrer Place where demand is strong. The company signed 13 new leases last quarter at Australia Square, and with 76% of its office assets planted in core CBD locations, it's seeing vacancy drop in Sydney, Melbourne and Perth. Melbourne's CBD just recorded its first fall in vacancy since 2021, while Sydney rents have jumped 10% year-on-year as landlords regain the upper hand. Meanwhile, corporate downsizing is running out of puff, with sublease space now down more than 50% since the peak of the Covid shuffle. 'The outlook for Australian real asset markets continues to improve, underpinned by strong population growth, high levels of employment, constrained supply pipelines and declining interest rates,' said Dexus' CEO, Ross Du Vernet. Invicta shows there's still value in vintage While Dexus rides the return-to-office wave in shiny towers, there's a revival unfolding in Melbourne's heritage buildings. Take Invicta House, a 1920s gem tucked a stone's throw from Flinders Station, recently given a new lease on life by ST Real Estate (STRE). Once home to a silk factory, later hosting Victoria Police and even Greenhouse Backpackers, this heritage-listing still carries the layers of Melbourne's past. Now, after an 18-month transformation, it's ready to turn the page, blending old-world charm with new-school functionality in the heart of the city. STRE picked it up for $37 million in 2021, a fair bit below what Swinburne Uni paid a few years prior, and then tipped in another $2 million for a modern refit, courtesy of highly regarded builder, Dewcape. Now, Invicta is back in business – with two new restaurants downstairs, rooftop terraces up top, and spec suites ready to show off to tenants who want more than just glass and steel. The refurb also added two extra levels, bringing the total net leasable area to over 5,000 square metres, a solid upgrade for a building that's nearly 100 years old. It even received the mayoral stamp of approval. Melbourne Lord Mayor Nicholas Reece was on hand to officially re-open the building, calling it a standout example of how heritage can be reimagined without losing its soul. 'This is an iconic redevelopment that creates a New York-style destination in the renowned precinct of Flinders Lane,' ST Real Estate Managing Director, Matthew Burrows, told Stockhead. 'We wanted to both retain the historical attraction of this building while also offering A-grade-level amenities. 'To see this building through to completion is a major milestone, and we are proud to showcase a modern look to a building that next year will be 100 years old.' Heritage isn't easy, however Burrows acknowledged that heritage refurbishments are difficult. 'It's cheaper to knock it down and build a glass box, to be honest. But you don't get the same retention of the Melbourne streetscape and the heritage,' he said. 'And we're patient long-term investors, it makes sense for us to just sit and hold .' Melbourne's market, though, hasn't exactly been playing nice, and with vacancy still around 8%, it's not exactly a landlord's paradise. 'Melbourne is probably one of the sickest markets in Australia at the moment,' Burrows said, but added that supply is drying up fast and demand will likely outstrip it over the next five years. 'You'll see vacancy come back to a level that's more in equilibrium, and fairer to both parties.' Flexible funding from Zagga While the spotlight is on the building, the real story behind Invicta's comeback was how it was funded. Instead of going cap in hand to the big banks, STRE went the private credit route, and that flexibility made all the difference. 'Private credit, and in particular Zagga, provided quite a compelling option for us due to its flexibility and deep understanding of construction finance,' Burrows said. 'It actually worked better for our delivery of the project than if we dealt with the big four.' He explained that traditional banks offered cheaper rates, but came with tighter LVRs and far more hoops to jump through. The breathing room afforded by Zagga gave STRE the confidence to finish the building first before kicking off leasing. It's a strategy aimed at attracting the right A-grade tenants, who often need to see and feel the space before signing anything long term. 'Pre-committing leasing is an incredibly difficult business, as smaller, more nimble occupiers need to see a completed product. 'Zagga gave us the flexibility to fund the construction and hold back the leasing campaign until completion, giving us the opportunity to attract long-term quality tenants by allowing them to experience the space firsthand.' Now, with 80% of the building already leased, that strategy seems to be working nicely. Invicta House is proof that old buildings can still pay new dividends, if you've got the patience, the plan, and a partner who gets the job done.

Anthony Albanese's second term showing positive signs for Australia's gas sector However, reform of approvals process is unlikely Investment still occurring in Queensland with Shell reported to be bringing in high spec rig Australia's gas sector has been in the doldrums for some time now thanks to a decade-long period of underinvestment caused by regulatory uncertainty, approval delays, policy interventions and unattractive investment climate. However, the strong mandate Prime Minister Anthony Albanese is bringing into his second term could deliver changes to revive the sector, particularly at a time where there is growing concern about gas supply constraints on the East Coast. Australian Energy Market Operator chief executive officer Daniel Westerman said earlier in 2025 that flexible gas-powered generation 'will remain the ultimate backstop in a high-renewable power system." 'Gas, alongside batteries and pumped hydro, will enable higher renewable contributions and support reliability as coal-fired power stations retire,' he added. Speaking to Stockhead, MST Access head of energy research Saul Kavonic said there were some positive signs, one of which is Queensland Senator Murray Watt replacing Tanya Plibersek in the high-profile environment and water portfolio. 'I think we'll see less politically driven holdups of approvals,' he noted. Kavonic adds that we have been seeing rhetoric, including from the Prime Minister, highlighting the role for gas. 'A lot of what's driving this is under nearly every scenario going forward where they see coal exiting or retiring from the grid, the need for gas capacity increases,' he said. 'What I think the government has realised ... (is) that gas capacity is actually going to be one of the biggest logjams to delivering any of the pathways for the NEM going forward. 'That's why you're seeing moves from Victorian Energy Minister, Lily D'Ambrosio, who really didn't want to even talk about gas for the last several years, now urgently wants to have taxpayers fund an import terminal to solve the gas capacity issue.' Managing expectations However, Kavonic was quick to douse hopes there will be major changes, saying reform of the approvals process is unlikely. While the delays faced by the North West Shelf extension was due to politically held-up approvals, Kavonic said, there was a broader issue where approvals for smaller projects take years rather than months like they used to. 'That's not the Environment Minister deliberately standing on a hose for political agenda,' he said. 'This is just an issue with a lot of inertia and, in some cases, hostility within departments, which just sees them sitting on things needlessly for a long period of time.' Kavonic also noted that the industry continued to view New South Wales and Victoria as being hostile to gas developments, which diminishes the appetite for investment. He highlighted Minister D'Ambrosio's apparent hostility to gas in her social media. 'If you're a gas company, why would you deploy money in Victoria if that's all the noise that you are getting out of the government.' Kavonic also noted that while Santos' (ASX:STO) Narrabri coal seam gas project had cleared some initial hurdles – including the recent ruling by the Native Title Tribunal that the New South Wales State Government can lease the land to Santos, it still had a lot more hurdles to clear regarding pipeline access. 'Narrabri is quite unique, it's got a much stronger local level of opposition there, which predates a lot of the more climate minded opposition we've seen to gas over the last five years,' he added. More generally, he said the language from the Labor Government, particularly post the election, has dramatically improved and become more pragmatic. 'But industry wants to see actions to match the words before they start deploying capital in a material way again.' What needs to be done? Kavonic says there are three things the government can do to really improve the gas sector's fortunes, the biggest of which is to streamline the approvals process. 'The government needs to put in place a clear one-stop shop for approvals, streamline the process, and provide a very clear and more rapid timeframe for a decision," he said. The second is to deliver on its commitment to reform the offshore consultation process, which Kavonic said was held up when a deal with the Greens emerged as a potential hurdle. 'I think industry is going to want to see that reform happen. It would be a very important indicator from the government that they are actually being more pragmatic," he said. 'There should be a lot more room to be pragmatic. First of all, the Greens have been completely destroyed in the lower house and while they still hold the balance of power in the Senate, they are also in complete disarray. 'If there was ever an opportunity to get something done it should be sooner rather than later.' The last area relates to the current review underway on East Coast gas policy regarding pricing. 'Industry really wants to see a sign from government that the interventions are going to stop,' Kavonic said. 'Pulling back from more draconian East Coast interventions would also be an important signal but everything right now suggests that they're going to go the other way and toughen up those approvals and potentially impose a form of reservation policy on the East Coast. "When you give contradictory signals uncertainty remains high and people don't want to deploy investment.' Gas investment bright spots It isn't all doom and gloom though. Kavonic points out there's still investment activity with Shell bringing in a heavy duty, high-spec rig to drill the highly prospective Taroom Trough in Queensland. The supermajor typically only makes major investments in upstream exploration when it is sure of its returns. Kavonic thinks increased discussions of LNG imports will eventually be good for local developers in Queensland and gas storage solutions, as increased development of assets to pipe gas from north to south looms as a better option than LNG. Queensland has also flagged its interest in attracting more upstream gas investment with the Crisafulli government releasing nine new areas across the Cooper/Eromanga and Bowen/Surat Basins in late May. 'The best way to bring down energy prices is to have more energy in the market, and that starts with exploration,' State Minister for Natural Resources and Mines Dale Last said. 'These steps are about unlocking new supply, securing an investment pipeline and getting the right policy settings in place so Queensland can lead the way on energy security. 'Unscientific decisions made by the southern states have left Queensland carrying the load for the East Coast gas market. We need a regulatory framework that supports new development, instead of holding it back.' Gas companies With Queensland still keen on gas, it is no surprise that some of the most active gas players on the ASX are focused on that state. QPM Energy (ASX:QPM) for one has been taking steps to progress its producing Moranbah gas project further. Since acquiring Moranbah in 2023, the company has increased the project's 2P reserve position by 166PJ to 435PJ (at April 2025), making its 315PJ of uncontracted gas reserves one of the largest uncontracted gas portfolios in the Eastern Australian market. At current production of ~10-11PJ/year, the company has ~40 years of 2P reserve life. It recently executed new funding agreements with foundation customer Dyno Nobel that includes a prepayment facility of up to $40m for gas delivered from April 2026 to March 2033. This adds to the existing $120m Development Funding Facility (DFF) which is not repaid in cash but rather amortises as QPM delivers gas into a gas sales agreement with Dyno Nobel. QPM is currently finalising planning for a new production well drilling program targeted to begin later this year to be funded under the DFF. It also expects to see improved economics from July when a new, much lower cost structure under the new contracts reached with Townsville Power Station and North Queensland Gas Pipeline kicks in. The project currently produces 22-24 terajoules of gas per day from more than 125 wells. Existing infrastructure includes over 500km of gas-gathering and water pipelines, a 150km electricity distribution network, 64TJ/d of compression capacity, the 160 megawatt Townsville power station and the 12.8MW Moranbah power station. Over in the Taroom Trough, companies such as Omega Oil & Gas (ASX:OMA) and Elixir Energy (ASX:EXR) have seen significant results from their respective projects. This lends further credence to the potential of the Taroom Trough that Shell seems so keen to pursue. Meanwhile, Comet Ridge (ASX:COI) holds a 57.14% interest in the Mahalo Gas Project joint venture with Santos, which has a proved and probable (2P) gas reserves of 266 petajoules and a further 315PJ in best estimate (2C) contingent gas resources. Santos is currently progressing a front-end engineering and design study for Mahalo while pipeline partner Jemena is pushing ahead with FEED for a 10 inch pipeline over about 80km that will connect the field with key pipeline infrastructure. The company also holds the Mahalo North and East projects that could feed gas into the Mahalo hub. Despite the concerns facing projects in the southern states, Advent Energy – an unlisted company that's 36% owned by BPH Energy (ASX:BPH) – is seeking a judicial review to affirm its PEP 11 permit in the offshore Sydney Basin. Advent continues to maintain that the permit is in force with respect to matters such as reporting, payment of rents and the various provisions of the Offshore Petroleum and Greenhouse Gas Storage Act 2006. Its interest in PEP 11 is due to its belief that the permit could host multiple trillion cubic feet of gas, which could go a long way towards meeting East Coast gas demand.
