Lynchburg student wins ‘AAA School Safety Patrol Award'
LYNCHBURG, Va. (WFXR) – A young student of Bedford Hills Elementary has received recognition for going 'above and beyond' as a Safety Patrol Captain.
'This patroller's dedication to her studies and school, her classmates, and her community makes her a shining example of leadership and character. We can't think of a better representative of the AAA School Safety Patrol,' said AAA Mid-Atlantic representative Adam Reece, who presented McAngus with the award at a school assembly.

Lynchburg City School officials said McAngus has gone 'above and beyond' in her duties, showing initiative to train and mentor, displays responsibility and respect, and is always ready to learn. This past fall, she designed a certificate to award younger students who embody the 'Husky Way' and read the AAA training handbook to fellow patrollers.

D-Day anniversary events remember the ‘Bedford Boys'
BEDFORD, Va. (WFXR) — The anniversary of D-Day is a particularly somber one for the Town of Bedford, which has been home to the National D-Day Memorial since 2001. The town lost 20 young men while they were storming the beaches of Normandy, giving Bedford, a town of just over 3,200 at the time, the highest per capita death toll from D-Day. Executive Director of the Bedford Boys Tribute Center Ken Parker says 19 of those men were killed within the first nine minutes, without ever having fired a shot. 'They gave up all their tomorrows for our today,' said Parker. 'They perpetually teach us that freedom is not free.' At the National D-Day Memorial, Virginia Governor Glenn Youngkin spoke in front of hundreds, including 10 of the few surviving World War II veterans. He called on listeners to remember the sacrifices of those who gave their lives that day, many of whom, he pointed out, were barely old enough to graduate high school at the time. Clarence 'Bill' Wenzel was one of those men, just 17 at the time he joined the Navy during World War II. On Friday morning, he recalled the moment he was notified that he had been drafted. National D-Day memorial in Bedford commemorates 80th anniversary of D-Day 'I didn't like being drafted to go to war, because I was raised by a pastor,' said Wenzel. 'I was taught to love everybody and now here I'm being trained on how to kill another human being.' Later in the day, dozens gathered outside the Bedford County Courthouse for the annual wreath-laying ceremony for those 20 'Bedford Boys.' On the 10-year anniversary of D-Day, roughly 5,000 met at the courthouse for the dedication of a memorial stone shipped from France to honor the boys. Every year over the next four decades, two of the surviving 'Bedford Boys,' met at the stone to lay an ivy wreath at its base in honor of their fallen brothers. On the 81st anniversary, the town carried on that tradition, as relatives of those two men had the honor of placing the ivy wreath by the stone, while the descendants of the fallen 'Bedford Boys,' looked on. 'It's without a doubt the highlight of our entire year,' said Parker. 'To pay homage and respect to our beloved Bedford Boys.' Finally, at 6:44 p.m., a nod to June of 1944, all the church bells in town rang for one minute, while the bell atop the courthouse rang once for each of the 'Bedford Boys,' that laid down their lives in service of their country. Emergency room visits for nitrous oxide misuse surge 757% over 4 years in Michigan
Michigan health officials are reporting a dramatic increase in emergency medical incidents relating to the recreational use of nitrous oxide, also known as "laughing gas." The Michigan Department of Health and Human Services related the circumstances in a press release issued Wednesday. Specifically, calls to the Michigan Poison and Drug Information Center involving recreational nitrous oxide use and its adverse health effects increased by 533% from 2019 to 2024. That statistic is supported by a 553% increase in emergency medical service calls related to nitrous oxide during the same period. Emergency department visits also increased by 757% from 2019 to 2023. The medical complications of such use can include neurological damage and psychiatric effects. "This is a serious public health problem. At the MiPDC, our consultants are encountering a significant increase in cases involving neurological and cardiovascular effects related to the recreational use of nitrous oxide," said Dr. Varun Vohra, MiPDC senior director and clinical toxicologist. Starting in 2024, state law has prohibited the sale of items designed for recreational nitrous oxide use. The product is used in medical settings as an anesthetic and analgesic, and commercially in steel aerosol whipped cream dispensers. But it can also be bought online or at a variety of retail shops, with a variety of flavors that are considered attractive among younger people. "The drug landscape is constantly changing and the increases in nitrous oxide misuse are concerning, given the widespread availability of the product and the increase in multiple substance use," said Dr. Natasha Bagdasarian, state chief medical executive. "It is crucial that individuals who use nitrous oxide are aware of the risks of chronic use and take steps to reduce its harms." Anyone who notices concerning symptoms after using nitrous oxide recreationally should seek emergency medical care. Individuals can also call the MiDPC at 800-222-1222 for information.
