Man convicted for deadly Redwood City street race dies in jail
(KRON) — A Redwood City street racer died in jail, officials said, after he was convicted for his role in causing a crash that left twin girls orphaned.
Kyle Harrison, 25, of Redwood City, was found unresponsive in the Maple Street Correctional Center's general population housing pod just before 5 p.m. on March 15, according to the coroner's office and sheriff's office. Shortly after, he was pronounced deceased by paramedics.
Investigators with the San Mateo County District Attorney's Office, coroner, and sheriff are currently conducting independent investigations to determine the circumstances surrounding the in-custody death. Harrison's suspected cause of death was not released by officials.
Last year, Harrison pleaded no contest to engaging in a speed contest and felony vehicular manslaughter for the deaths of Grace Spiridon, and her husband, Gregory Ammen. The couple's 7-year-old daughters 'miraculously' survived the crash on El Camino Real, prosecutors said.
Harrison was sentenced in February to serve eight years in state prison. The inmate was also given 1,676 days credit for time served in jail. He was scheduled to appear for a restitution hearing in the San Mateo County Hall of Justice on May 7, according to the DA's office. Court records show that Harrison was slated to be transported from the county jail to a state prison facility after May 8.
The street race happened on Nov. 4, 2022 in Redwood City. Harrison raced his BMW against a teenager, Cesar Salto Morales, who was driving a Mercedes Benz on El Camino Real. Morales' Mercedes slammed into a Chevrolet Bolt with Spiridon, Ammen, and their two young daughters inside.
Prosecutors said the parents were killed on impact, and their daughters survived in the backseat. The family was less than 10 minutes away from their San Carlos home at the time of the crash.
Prosecutors said Harrison fled the scene, and a witness recorded his BMW's license plate number with her cellphone as he was driving away. Police found and arrested Harrison weeks later.
The sheriff's office said it will release more information about Harrison's death after investigators find out more about what happened in the jail.
'We understand the concerns and questions that may arise from any in-custody death. While the independent investigations are ongoing, we want to assure the community that once the investigations are complete, the Sheriff's Office will make the findings public,' the sheriff's office wrote.
A GoFundMe page raised half a million dollars to support the crash victims' orphaned daughters.

‘Disturbing': Clover community wants answers, justice after hit-and-run that killed father
A town in South Carolina is mourning the tragic loss of a father killed by a driver who didn't stop to help. It happened over the weekend near a Shell gas station along Highway 55 in Clover. Channel 9's Tina Terry asked police about the investigation, but they still haven't found the driver. Now, they're asking for the community's help. Police say the victim, Anthony Parker, was walking with his bike on the shoulder of Highway 55 when the car hit him and kept going. 'That is disturbing. You know for somebody to hit somebody and keep going. Don't see how they can live with themselves,' Ron Penley, a neighbor, said. Neighbors in Clover were disappointed that a driver hit 31-year-old Anthony Raheem Parker Sunday morning and just kept going. 'I think it's terrible, I do,' said another neighbor, Marybeth Adams. The South Carolina State Highway Patrol said Parker was likely hit from behind. Troopers don't know the make or the model of the car involved, but they say it may have damage to the front or the passenger side of the vehicle. 'You would think if somebody saw something like that, they'd report it,' Penley said. A GoFundMe page set up for Parker says he left behind a 3-year-old daughter. His loss is devastating family members, and people in the community are hoping they'll get answers soon. 'I hope they get justice, I really do. They need justice, they need something,' Adams said. The family is raising money to help with funeral expenses. If you have information that can help find the driver involved, you can submit an anonymous tip to the highway patrol by calling 843-661-4705. (VIDEO: First solar-powered Domino's opens in Clover)

Lake Charles man dies in Jeff Davis Parish boating accident
JEFF DAVIS PARISH, La. () — A Lake Charles man has died after a boating accident on Sunday, authorities said. The body of Danny Harrison, 71, of Lake Charles, was turned over to the Jefferson Davis Parish Coroner's Office. Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries agents received a call around 8:30 p.m. Sunday about a boater that was fatally struck by an engine prop while he was in the water. Investigators said Harrison was operating a 16-foot vessel with a 40-horsepower hand tiller outboard motor when he hit an object in the water and was ejected from the vessel. The unmanned vessel then ran in circles when it struck Harrison in the water. Close Thanks for signing up! Watch for us in your inbox. Harrison was wearing a personal flotation device, but the evidence collected suggests he was not wearing a kill switch lanyard. A kill switch lanyard attached to the operator is required for anyone operating a vessel less than 26 feet with a hand tiller outboard motor over 10 horsepower that is designed to have an engine cut-off switch while the motor is running and the vessel is underway, officials said.
