Mountain rescue team member rescued after slip led to 'significant lower leg injury'
A mountain rescue team has been rescued after suffering a 'significant lower leg injury' due to a slip.
A dog handler and mountain rescue team (MRT) member was rescued on Tuesday, May 20, after Keswick MRT was alerted to an incident in Brandlehow Woods, above Derwentwater.
The mountain rescue team member, who was on a training exercise with the Lake District Mountain Rescue Search Dogs, had 'slipped on a greasy slab of rock' and sustained a 'significant lower leg injury'.
Keswick MRT provided medical assistance to the team member, who was subsequently stretchered back to the road before being transferred to hospital.
Writing on social media: "The day most Mountain Rescuers dread – being rescued themselves.
"A dog handler and MR member from a neighbouring team had slipped on a greasy slab of rock caused by the first rain in what seems like an age.
"The slip, unfortunately, gave rise to a significant lower leg injury.
Surrounded by dog bodies, volunteers that hide in the wood for the dogs to find, and dog handlers the casualty was quick to receive help.
"On arrival Keswick team provided medical assistance and stretchered the man back to the road for onward transfer to hospital.
"We wish the casualty a quick recovery and hope to see both man and dog back on the hill soon."
Keswick MRT were deployed at 7:22pm, with the rescue, involving 34 team members, taking one hour and 38 minutes to complete.

Volunteers remove thousands of Himalayan Balsam plants at Bowling Park
Volunteers have worked to clear an area of Bowling Park from an invasive and fast-growing plant species: Himalayan Balsam. Staff from N-Gen Energy Solutions joined forces with members of the Friends of Bowling Park for a day of improvements at the park, to mark Volunteers' Week (June 2 to 8). The eight-strong team's other tasks included cleaning park signs, planting shrubs and flowers, weeding cobbles, and restoring a bench near The Cabin. Urban ranger Kristian Eastwood, from Better Place Bradford, helped the volunteers clear The Roughs, a woodland area in the park which had become overrun with Himalayan Balsam. (Image: Supplied) Thousands of the plants were removed by volunteers. Bowling Park was chosen for the volunteering work because it is near the Birkshall Gas Site, where N-Gen is investing as a partner in what a spokesperson for the company described as "one of the UK's largest low-carbon hydrogen production, storage, and refuelling stations." The park is also seeing more visitors as it hosts The Beacon, a touring venue providing dance workshops and performances as part of the City of Culture 2025 celebrations. On this day in 2024: Coat of Hopes to arrive at Bradford Cathedral
On this day in 2024, the Telegraph and Argus reported that a symbol of collective climate hopes was about to arrive in Bradford. The Coat of Hopes, a patchwork pilgrim coat, was set to arrive on the night of Friday, June 7, 2024 at Bradford Cathedral, as part of its "perpetual pilgrimage" - of which 1,500km had so far been covered at the time of reporting. The coat, made up of more than 600 blanket patches, began its journey in 2021 with a nine-week journey from the south coast to the gates of COP 26 in Glasgow. The coat's arrival at Bradford Cathedral coincided with the start of the Tree of Life concert, and the coat was set to be on display for three weeks, as well as to be taken to local schools and community groups. Barbara Keal, who instigated the coat, said: "The coat's work through this ongoing pilgrimage is to offer everyone the invitation to stop and, in wearing it, focus on the climate and ecological emergency, and our connection to all those others who face it with us. "The Coat of Hopes carries forward, in its fabric, stories of people and places encountered on its way. "It will be so good to meet, walk, sing, and sew with the people of West Yorkshire, and take them with us as we continue on our way - walking towards the end of this emergency." The coat was set to stop next at Haworth Parish Church on June 29, 2024, with members of the public invited to join in the walk from Bradford Cathedral to the next destination. The Coat of Hopes also has a song, which declares its aims, and which is sung each time a new person wears the coat.
