World peace to be focus for new cathedral canon
A former NHS doctor who has been appointed as a canon at Coventry Cathedral says she wants to create a culture of peace in a divided world.
Reverend Canon Kate Massey is currently a vicar in Stockingford, Warwickshire, and will take up the role in June which will focus on the arts and reconciliation.
She said "in an increasingly polarised world" Coventry's "vocation to reconciliation is more timely than ever".
The cathedral is well-known as a centre for reconciliation since the destruction of the city's Old Cathedral in World War Two.
Rev Canon Massy added it would be a "joy and an honour to serve" as the team explores "ways to heal the wounds of history, celebrate difference and build a culture of justice and peace".
Before she was ordained, she specialised in mental health and psychiatry when she was a doctor, a cathedral spokesperson said.
She would bring a "wealth of practical and pastoral experience" and was currently studying for a PhD on the reconciliation work of the cathedral, they added.
Rev Canon Massy follows the Right Reverend Mary Gregory who left the role in November when she was appointed Bishop of Reading.

Tolkien inspires naming of four peregrine falcons
Down the riders came, tearing down from the mountains of Mordor, through Rohan to the Shire - and there they found Frodo, Merry, Pippin and Sam. OK, it might not have gone exactly like that but those are the four names which have been chosen for the peregrine falcon chicks hatched this year at Leamington Town Hall. Warwickshire Wildlife Trust invited people to share their ideas for the three females and one male before putting them to a final vote (Sauron was barred from voting). More than 900 took part in the poll and the Lord of the Rings-themed names emerged victorious, named after JRR Tolkien's hobbits. Other suggestions included the sky and stars as well as names with connections to Leamington - but ultimately, the trust said, the Middle-Earth theme was a "clear favourite". A spokesperson added that the names were submitted by Natasha and Charmain and Charmain added: "The Lord of the Rings is a British classic and these four little ones will soon wander." Newport Historical Society exhibition wins national award
NEWPORT, R.I. (WPRI) — The Newport Historical Society (NHS) is being recognized at the national level for shining a light on some of the city's previously untold history. The American Association for State and Local History (AASLH) announced on Tuesday that the Rhode Island organization would be receiving an award of excellence for its 2024 exhibition, 'A Name, A Voice, A Life: The Black Newporters of the 17th-19th Centuries.' The exhibition was on display at the Richard I. Burnham Resource Center in Newport from May to November 2024. RELATED: Newport Historical Society making Black history more accessible 'A Name, A Voice, A Life' featured the names of Black Newporters whose stories were uncovered during a four-year research project that involved digitizing the Newport Historical Society's archives. The AASLH said its Leadership in History awards are the 'most prestigious recognition for achievement in the preservation and interpretation of state and local history.' 'After an incredible community response and reception to this exhibition, which centered the experiences and contributions of Black Newporters in our historic city, it is so exciting to earn national recognition from an esteemed leader in the field,' NHS Executive Director Rebecca Bertrand said in a press release. The NHS said the exhibition and database also played an integral role in launching the capital campaign to turn the 328-year-old Wanton-Lyman-Hazard House into the future Edward W. Kane & Martha J. Cold War fighter jet fired up after 18 years
A Cold War fighter jet, which spent the majority of its service at RAF Binbrook, has been fired up for the first time in 18 years. Lightning XR724, was designed to intercept Soviet bombers and first flew on 10 February 1965. The aircraft, which was retired in 1991, has been undergoing a five-year restoration project at the site near Market Rasen. Chief engineer Chris Johnson, who was in the cockpit when the 60-year-old plane was started, said: "Getting this old lady running again after so long being idle is going to feel great." Mr Johnson said his team is hoping to fix the aircraft's top engine by the end of 2026. The next public run of the engine is due to be carried out an open day on 6 September.
