KUALA LUMPUR: Studies and sports can be a good mix as proven by a group of athletes cum students who have passed their Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) with flying colours. Among the high-achievers are national junior track cyclist Dania Avriel Alviera Azif, volleyball player Lee Xin Nee, youth bowler Intan Nor Edryana Nor Azliman and rhythmic gymnast Lim Xian Yar. Dania went through lots of stressful moments juggling her studies and devoting time to training last year but it has all paid off after she scored 10As. The student from SMK Desa Cempaka in Nilai received the good news with a mix of joy and relief. "I'm beyond grateful to share that I have achieved straight As in my SPM. It wasn't an easy journey, full of sleepless nights, tears, doubts and countless prayers," said Dania posted on Instagram. "But with perseverance, support from my family, teachers, friends, and most importantly, Allah's guidance, I made it through. Dania have not only shone in her academic studies but she has done well in her cycling career too. Dania, who focuses on endurance events, won the silver in Omnium in the Asian Championships in New Delhi, India last year. She continued her good run by picking up bronze in the scratch race at the Asian meet in February this year. "I hope to fight for selection for the 2027 SEA Games (in Kuala Lumpur). One does not have to neglect studies while pursing track cycling as it can be done with proper time management," added Dania, who has never failed to pack her books along when she is on international assignment. Like Dania, Xin Nee also showed that she was as sharp in the classroom as she was with her spikes, scoring 10As as well. Other Bukit Jalil Sports School students who had outstanding SPM results were national youth bowler Intan Nor Edryana Nor Azliman who scored 9As and rhythmic gymnast Lim Xian Yar, who scored 7As and 3Bs. Intan is currently preparing for the Asian Youth Championships in Petaling Jaya from Aug 20-28.

Shahidan refutes Irfan's claims of intimidation by MA officials

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Athletics (MA) president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim has denied claims that he and other MA officials threatened national discus thrower Irfan Shamsuddin. This comes after Irfan, a bronze medallist at the recent Asian Championships in South Korea, alleged on Friday that he had been subjected to threats by Shahidan and several MA officials — though he declined to reveal further details. The 28-year-old athlete has since lodged formal complaints with World Athletics (WA), Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh, the National Sports Council (NSC), National Sports Institute (ISN), and MA itself. "I have never threatened Irfan or any other athlete," Shahidan said yesterday. "I believe someone has instigated him. I have a good relationship with everyone." Earlier, Irfan said that the repeated acts of intimidation had impacted his well-being, sense of security and ability to train and perform as a national athlete. "Today, I am officially raising serious concerns regarding the ongoing acts of intimidation against me," said Irfan during a press conference. "It is the right and dignity of every athlete to train without fear. I urge the relevant authorities and sports bodies to take this matter seriously. "I am proud to have won a bronze medal for Malaysia at the Asian Championships, but I feel saddened that I received a series of threats from MA officials. These actions have caused emotional distress." Irfan added: "I have given my time and dedication to represent Malaysia since I was 14, winning six Sea Games gold medals, one silver, and two bronzes at the Asian Championships. "I've trained and competed for this country for 16 years — should my future be determined solely by one individual? "I have the right to speak out — not only for my own dignity but also for every athlete. Sport should be a space for justice, support, and respect." The MA elections will take place on Sunday, with Shahidan seeking re-election against three challengers: incumbent deputy president Datuk Seri Wira Mark Ling, Perak's Datuk Karim Ibrahim and Terengganu's Datuk Wan Hisham Wan Salleh.

MA plays it safe this time after 2023 flop

KUALA LUMPUR: Malaysia Athletics (MA) won't ask for trouble this time. No bold gold medal-target proclaimation from the national association for the Thailand Sea Games in December. MA has wisened up. For the 2023 Phnom Penh Sea Games, Malaysia Athletics Federation (MAF) declared an eyebrow-raising 10-gold target. It turned out MAF was only 'half successful' as its athletes won only five gold. Overall, the Malaysian contingent failed to meet their target in Phnom Penh and the athletics squad were criticised for being a letdown. MA president Datuk Seri Shahidan Kassim was more cautious this time. He said that MAF would not reveal the gold-target for Bangkok. "The sports minister will announce the number of gold target for athletics soon. But we want to make sure our athletes deliver better than five golds in Bangkok. "When the athletes don't perform, the president and association get the blame. But when the athletes perform, no one praises the president or the association," said Shahidan.
