Sainsbury's to axe three key services in UK stores by summer

The supermarket chain has confirmed it is shutting its remaining patisserie, hot food and pizza counters.
This is expected to occur within weeks, as it released its latest financial results for the year up to March 1, 2025.
This decision aims to create more space inside stores so that more fresh food options can be offered to customers.
Sainsbury's said its most popular food items sold at its patisseries, hot food, and pizza counters will instead be made available in aisles.
It has also announced plans to create new 'On the Go' hubs, which will offer hot food to customers from autumn this year.
As reported by The Express, in an update, Sainsbury's said: 'In January, we announced a number of propositional changes to food services in our stores in order to drive growth and availability at a reduced cost to serve, allowing us to create further space to offer more fresh food ranges.
'By early summer, we will have closed patisserie, hot food and pizza counters and are making the most popular items available in aisles.
"We have now closed all remaining Sainsbury's Cafés and we are converting our scratch bakeries to bake-off, driving improvements in quality, value and availability throughout the day."
They added: 'From the Autumn, we will create new On the Go hubs with flexiserve hot food offerings, delivering an improved customer experience.'
This announcement from Sainsbury's follows its decision to install cameras above self-service tills, similar to many UK supermarkets.

However, a selection of shoppers were not impressed and some said they 'won't use a self-checkout again.'

Italy's Kinder Country now in Sainsbury's for £1.60

Kinder Country bars, known as Kinder Cereali abroad, were launched in 1986 exclusively in Italy. The treat consists of milk chocolate filled with milk cream and crispy puffed and roasted cereal. It appeared that in the UK, the bite-sized bars were only available to buy from online sweet distributors or in bulk from Amazon - until now. Shoppers were delighted to see that Sainsbury's stocks the treats in a four-pack for £1.60 - a steal in comparison to online prices ranging from £13 upwards. Reviewers on the supermarket's online shopping site were quick to praise the store for getting them on the shelves. One customer commented: 'Yippee I'm so made up to see these in Sainsbury's. 'I've been looking for them everywhere. 'They're so tasty - good on Sainsbury's for stocking them.' While another added: 'I'm Italian so I knew what I was buying, I highly recommend this item, as it is ideal for a snack or for the children's lunch box.' Others were also quick to share their delight at the snack being available on UK shelves. 'Couldn't believe when I saw it on the shelf as a new product,' a reviewer said. 'I have been buying them abroad for so many years and asking family members to bring them over from Italy, as they are branded a different name. 'Well done for getting them on the shelf.' Kinder says that Kinder Country is 'perfect for sharing, as kids and adults alike can enjoy a scrumptious snack'. Tesco shoppers say 'love this' as they notice surprise meal deal addition

In a new Facebook post on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, one shopper shared a photo that showed you can choose an ice lolly as the snack option of your meal deal Tesco shoppers are just realising that you can choose an ice lolly as part of your supermarket meal deal. Tesco charges £4 for a main, snack and drink, reduced to £3.60 if you have a Clubcard. In a new Facebook post on the Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, one shopper shared a photo that showed you can choose an ice lolly as the snack option of your meal deal. ‌ The post shows that ice lollies such as Twisters and Mini Pops are included. They said: 'Tesco are now doing ice lollies in the meal deal (not sure if new this year or if I'm late to the party). Down in the Clubcard section of the freezers.' ‌ The post quickly took off, with one person commenting: 'Love this!!!! Esp [especially] for summer.' Another said: 'I need to go there.' However, others pointed out that this isn't a new deal - in fact, it was around last year. One worker also commented: 'Only selected stores I work in an extra an [sic] we dont have this offer on.' Others also said that Sainsbury's and Co-op have previously offered lollies with their meal deals too. It comes as Tesco shoppers are being urged to use their Clubcard points before they expire at the end of this month. Tesco sends out Clubcard vouchers every three months - in February, May, August and November - and they are valid for two years. This means the ones that are expiring on May 31, 2025, were first issued in May 2023. The supermarket has emailed a reminder to customers, saying: 'Your Clubcard vouchers are expiring soon. Don't forget to use them on your next shop.' Tesco shoppers earn one Clubcard point for every £1 spent on groceries in stores and online, or one point for every two litres of fuel purchased at a Tesco petrol station. ‌ You also get one point for every £1 spent with Tesco Mobile or for every £1 spent using a Tesco Clubcard Pay+ debit card, and one point for every £4 spent on a Tesco credit card. You need a minimum of 150 points to get a Clubcard voucher, which will be worth £1.50 to spend at Tesco. But if you're not quite ready to use your vouchers yet, there is a trick to extend their life - and double their value. It involves using your Clubcard points with a Tesco "Reward Partner" such as Thorpe Park, Pizza Express and the RAC. It you make a small purchase on the Tesco Clubcard Rewards webpage, your remaining Clubcard voucher balance will then be credited back to you as points. These points will be turned into vouchers again when Tesco next issues you a Clubcard statement. You will need to do this for every voucher you have though - so it may not be worth it for smaller amounts. Tesco has around 20 million Clubcard members in the UK.
