National salt shortage affecting local communities
CLEARFIELD COUNTY (WTAJ) – Residents in Clearfield County have started to notice the limited amount of salt being put on roads throughout the county due to the salt shortage.
'They've been putting down just the bare minimum to keep up with things I think. And it's just the heavy slush freezing at night time and just been very difficult these past few weeks,' resident Toni Houston said.
With the recent cold temperatures and slushy roads, commutes to and from work for many people have been very hard.

'When I left work at 6:30 yesterday, it looked like they had plowed the roads but I didn't really see a lot of salt at that time, and there definitely was ice,' resident Elizabeth Lanzoni said.
The national shortage of salt has forced many municipalities and counties to modify their efforts to make supplies last until the next delivery. But many don't know when that delivery could be.
In a statement earlier this month, a major salt supplier, American Rock Salt said,
'We realize some municipalities are concerned about supply and we understand the frustration associated with this very difficult winter stressing our supply chain.'
They also said that so far this winter they have shipped more salt than all of last year.
'In 2024 American Rock Salt shipped 1.8 million tons of salt for the entirety of the winter season; this winter through January 2025 alone we have already shipped over 2.1 million tons of salt. In total, we have mined and shipped more salt so far this winter than all of last year. Municipalities have acknowledged that in some instances they have already used the level of salt in 2025 compared to the level they used for the entire winter season of 2024.'
Community members said that we were due for a winter like this.
'I do believe the last two mild winters have softened us a bit with the driving in the ice and you know the constant snow and cold temperatures,' Lanzoni said.
The harsh weather is also something that is making folks countdown the weeks until spring.
'Punxsutawney Phil said 6 more weeks and I think we are down one so 5 more weeks to go,' Houston said.

Beach at Raystown Lake closed until further notice due to E. coli levels
HUNTINGDON COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Tatman Run Beach at Raystown Lake will be closed to swimmers after the most recent testing showed higher levels of E. coli. According to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers at Raystown Lake, a recent water sample that was taken from the swimming area showed that there was a high level of E. coli bacteria present. Due to this, the beach will be closed until further notice. It will reopen once the bacteria level is back within the 'lower 'safe' levels. The boat launch and picnic area will remain open, along with the beach itself. However, swimming will be off-limits. The engineers added that the bacteria levels fluctuate daily and can vary greatly from place to place. They also believe that heavy rain and the runoff it causes most likely played a role in the high levels of bacteria. Funding available for Somerset County residents affected by flooding
SOMERSET COUNTY, Pa. (WTAJ) — Residents who were impacted by the mid-May flooding may soon be getting some help from a local grant opportunity. The Community Foundation for the Alleghenies (CFA), along with the county, after the flooding, worked to establish the Somerset County Disaster Recovery Fund. This fund was intended to help residents recover from natural disasters like the flooding that was brought on by heavy rain. Applications for the Somerset County Disaster Recovery Fund Grant are now open and will be accepted until Wednesday, June 18. Nonprofit organizations, governmental entities, and religious organizations that are assisting residents with response and recovery may apply for a grant of up to $10,000. Pennsylvania is suing the USDA over cutting funding to a $1 billion food aid program for states Here are some eligibility requirements: Must be a 501(c)(3) organization, governmental entity, or religious organization. Applicants also must be registered and operate in Somerset County and be current on all taxes. Applicants for this first round of funding must be able to demonstrate and document the direct impact of the adverse weather events experienced in Somerset County on May 13-14. The applications will be reviewed by a committee that is made up of residents designated by the commissioners and emergency services. Steelers 2025 Training Camp schedule released
LATROBE, Pa. (WTAJ) — Football season is coming! The Pittsburgh Steelers have officially announced their 2025 Training Camp schedule on Wednesday. The Steelers will be returning once again to Saint Vincent College, for their 58th year, with camp scheduled to start once players report on Wednesday, July 23, with the first practice open to the public the next day on Thursday, July 24 at 1:55 p.m. The team's first padded practice will occur on Tuesday, July 29, also scheduled to start at 1:55 p.m. The highly anticipated 'Friday Night Lights' practice will be held at Latrobe Memorial Stadium Aug. 1 at 7 p.m., with the Steelers' final practice that will be open to the public at Saint Vincent College being held Tuesday, Aug. 13 at 10:30 a.m. Joint practice with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers will occur on Wednesday, Aug 14 at Acrisure Stadium, but will not be open to the public. Admission to most of the open practices is free for Steelers Nation, but attendees will need to have a mobile ticket, and season ticket holders will have early access to secure their tickets through Ticketmaster on Tuesday, June 24 at 10 a.m. Wait list members will follow at 11 a.m. Any remaining public tickets will be available at Noon.
