Chandigarh: Passengers on Air India's Chandigarh-Leh flight AI 458 faced a harrowing experience on Tuesday after the flight, already delayed by nearly three hours, reached Leh without carrying most of the checked-in luggage.
Chaos erupted at Leh airport as over 100 passengers discovered their baggage had been left behind in Chandigarh, triggering anger, slogans, and calls to local police at Leh.
The flight, originally scheduled to depart at 10:20 am on June 24, finally took off at 12.58 pm — after a delay of 2.40 hours. Passengers had earlier received a message from Air India stating that the new departure time would be 12.20 pm. However, the actual takeoff was nearly 40 minutes later than even the revised time.
The situation took a turn for the worse upon landing, when passengers waited in vain at the baggage belt. Many discovered that their bags — which included essential items like medicines, children's belongings, jewellery, and even cash — had not arrived. A video of the agitated passengers raising slogans against Air India staff quickly went viral on social media.

"First, we were kept waiting in Chandigarh for hours without proper updates. Then, at Leh, no one took responsibility or gave clear answers."
One woman alleged that she had medicines, jewellery, and cash in her missing bag and was met with apathy when she raised concerns. "When we asked for a receipt confirming our bags were missing, they scribbled something on a plain sheet of paper. It has no official stamp or value," she said.
Passengers also alleged that the staff misbehaved, didn't offer basic hospitality like water or seating, and refused to take responsibility. Some even called the local police at Leh airport for assistance.
Responding to the controversy, an Air India spokesperson cited weather-related weight restrictions as the reason for offloading the baggage. "Due to bad weather in Leh, the aircraft load had to be cut down for safety.
Ad-hoc arrangements have been made to send the luggage to Leh in subsequent flights," the airline stated.
Airport sources in Chandigarh confirmed that efforts are being made to send the left-behind baggage to Leh by Wednesday.

Passengers create ruckus over missing luggage on Air India's flight to Leh As many as 100 passengers of Air India flight A-458 from Chandigarh to Leh created a ruckus at Leh airport on Tuesday after some of them discovered that their luggage was missing. They raised slogans against the airline, and a video of the protest soon went viral on social media. One of the affected passengers, a woman, alleged that her missing bag contained essential medicines, cash, and valuable jewellery. She said she boarded the flight from Chandigarh at 10.20 am and upon arrival in Leh, her baggage was nowhere to be found. The passengers said they were not only distressed over the missing luggage—which also included children's items and clothes—but also over the rude behaviour of the Air India ground staff. 'When we questioned them about the bags, they simply said they didn't know anything,' said one passenger. According to the passengers, their repeated requests for a formal acknowledgement in writing that their baggage was missing were denied. 'They finally gave us a blank sheet of paper with something scribbled on it. It had no official stamp or value,' said another traveller. Adding to their annoyance, passengers claimed that the staff made no effort to provide basic assistance. 'They didn't even ask us to sit or offer us water,' one of them said. 'Losing our luggage is one thing, but the complete lack of empathy and responsibility from the airline is unacceptable.' Despite several calls and messages, Air India station manager Gaurav Lakhanpal did not respond.

HYDERABAD: The escalating conflict between Israel and Iran has impacted air travel from Hyderabad to West Asian countries, disrupting the plans of hundreds of travellers. On Tuesday, a total of 18 flights, including nine departures and nine arrivals connecting the city with Kuwait, Doha, Jeddah, Dubai, Riyadh, and Abu Dhabi, were cancelled. "As airspace over Iran remains restricted, some flights may take alternate routes, which could result in longer travel times. We recommend keeping a close watch on your flight status for the latest updates," said IndiGo. Meanwhile, some passengers were stranded at the Rajiv Gandhi International Airport, Shamshabad, due to the cancellations. "The flight services from Hyderabad to Doha were cancelled. My wife and child are stuck at the airport and trying to call +1 877-777-2827. It is getting busy, and the flight codes are QR4779, QR0703, and QR7664, and their PNR is 4NT8BI. Kindly provide us with an update on rescheduling," posted Tejeshwar Reddy on X. Later in the day, Air India stated that some flights might experience delays or cancellations due to consequential impacts and extended re-routings/flight times. "Air India will continue to avoid airspaces assessed as unsafe at any given time. We will progressively resume flights to the region starting today, with most operations to and from the Middle East resuming from June 25," said Air India. Another passenger Harsha posted "@qatarairways I had a flight on 24th June at 3:55am from Hyderabad to Doha and Doha to Montreal at 8.30am local time. I went to the airport and waited there for 2 hours and the local staff said all flights to Doha had been cancelled. So what is the procedure to do now?"
