RIX Riga Airport posts 3.4 million euros profit in 2024

RIX Riga Airport surpassed pre-pandemic passenger levels in 2024, doubling profits, advancing sustainability goals, and preparing for major terminal expansion.
RIX Riga Airport continues its steady growth – the number of passengers served in 2024 surpassed pre-pandemic levels (2019), and the company's profit more than doubled compared to 2023, reaching 3.4 million euros, according to the audited annual report for 2024.
Passenger numbers continued to grow last year, reaching 7.1 million – a 7 % increase compared to 2023. Of all passengers served, 78% were direct passengers. The number of flights to and from Riga Airport also increased by 3%, with a total of 63,000 flights handled.
The rise in passenger numbers contributed to a growth in net turnover, which reached 77.63 million euros in 2024 – 7 % more than the previous year. Revenue from aviation services amounted to 44.87 million euros, while non-aviation services generated 32.76 million euros – a year-on-year increase of over 12%.
Several key investment projects were implemented during the year to enhance passenger experience, airport efficiency, and sustainability. In total, Riga Airport invested 16.2 million euros last year. Major projects included the purchase of electric buses for passenger transport (3 million euros), continued reconstruction of the technical services building (over 2 million euros), and upgrades to the airport's electrical infrastructure. The airport also completed a project to replace aircraft bridges and purchased an electric ambulift for passengers with reduced mobility, along with high-powered airside ground handling equipment.
'2024 was a pivotal year in the development of Riga Airport. Not only did we celebrate the airport's 50th anniversary – honouring our history and collective achievements – but we also looked firmly toward the future. We rebranded the airport, giving it a modern, internationally competitive identity that clearly supports our strategic goal of becoming the future travel hub of Northern Europe. Our progress is reflected in the results – strong passenger volumes, solid financial performance, and significant advances in sustainability and infrastructure development. This year, we continue implementing major upgrades that will allow us to accommodate more passengers, reduce our environmental impact, and reinforce Latvia's position on the Nordic aviation map. Moreover, in the second half of 2025, following the conclusion of an international construction tender, we plan to launch the expansion of the Riga Airport's passenger terminal, for which we have already received binding financing offers from international financial institutions. This is a testament to Riga Airport's corporate reliability and financial stability,' said Chairperson of the Board of RIX Riga Airport, Mrs. Laila Odiņa.
According to the Global Reporting Index (GRI) standards, Riga Airport has also published its audited non-financial report outlining its sustainability strategy results. The airport's commitment to sustainability has been recognised with the highest 'Diamond' rating in the Sustainability Index. In 2023, the company updated its NetZero roadmap, pledging to reach climate neutrality by 2035. Significant reductions in CO₂ emissions have already been achieved, with the airport reaching Level 3 of the international 'Airport Carbon Accreditation' (ACA) programme. Key contributors to these results include the development of solar panel parks and replacing ageing diesel-powered buses with new electric buses used for airside passenger transport.

Zeal Hotels appoints sustainable development lead to drive growth

Zeal Hotels appoints James Ferdinando as sustainable development lead to advance net zero carbon goals and expand eco-conscious hotel projects across the UK. UNITED KINGDOM – Zeal Hotels has appointed James Ferdinando as sustainable development lead, as the group expands around the UK. The newly-created role follows the successful opening of the voco Zeal Exeter Science Park, IHG's first branded net zero carbon hotel. The hotel has the target of being the first in Western Europe to achieve a BREEAM Outstanding rating in recognition of its sustainable approach to design, construction and overall fit out. It has been designed to operate with industry-leading benchmark-setting Energy Use Intensity levels, a critical measure that ensures the buildings sustainable future. Zeal Hotels will draw on Ferdinando's extensive experience in sustainable construction practices and sustainable development. He joins the group from RED Construction, which constructed the voco Zeal at Exeter Science Park, where he was group head of sustainability. Prior to that he worked at a number of world leading global organisations within the electronics and pharmaceuticals industries, as well as construction-related companies including roofing specialists SIG Roofing and BMI. Ferdinando said: 'At Zeal Hotels we're trying to create a repeatable model, relating not only to the design, construction and fit out, but to the ongoing operational energy and carbon management of the hotel. Having completed the build we are now measuring a wide number of data points, including energy consumption and overall carbon impact, to meet and hopefully exceed our targets, proving the concept'. 'It is important to us that we meet our ambitions of true net zero carbon, by producing more energy than we consume over an annual period. With the use of innovative roof and façade PV systems (the first in the UK), we aim to achieve a zero net energy balance and ensure that our consumption EUI is offset with our own generated solar energy.' Tim Wheeldon, founding director, Zeal Hotels said: 'We are thrilled to have James as part of Zeal Hotels. He was an invaluable member of the team during the construction of the voco Zeal Exeter Science Park and we look forward to him driving further innovation as we grow across the UK.' The group is currently involved in a pilot testing scheme for a new benchmark across the built environment, the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard. The Standard is a response to the need for consistent rules around net zero carbon, to both validate net zero claims and accelerate the design, construction and use of buildings that deliver lower-carbon outcomes in line with the UK's legally-binding 2050 carbon targets. Ferdinando said: 'We are delighted to be a part of a project which will set verifiable standards across the UK and one which includes, for the first time, hotels. Our intentions are to meet the 2050 standards when they come out and at this stage we are confident that we will. 'As we develop we look forward to being able to answer the needs of guests, investors and the environment, as well as continuing to influence the rest of the sector for the better.'

Green Key drives certified, measurable hotel sustainability

At the FEE International Conference on Crete, Joaquin Arturo Diaz Rios discusses Green Key's sustainability roadmap, emphasizing certification, stakeholder accountability, and the urgent need for measurable, provable green practices. REPORT – Crete: The Green Key sustainability roadmap is shaping the future of the global hospitality sector, as emphasized by Joaquin Arturo Diaz Rios, CEO of FEE Mexico during the International Conference of the Foundation for Environmental Education (FEE) on Crete, Greece. Diaz Rios highlighted that strengthening Green Key's evaluation tools is essential to accurately measure the environmental impact of hotel operations. Simply claiming to be 'green' is no longer sufficient — properties must demonstrate their sustainability through rigorous internal and external assessments, providing tangible proof to consumers and stakeholders alike. Green Key's sustainability roadmap stresses that hotel operators must first become conscious of their impact, take responsibility, and then take action to minimize negative effects. This involves reducing water and energy consumption, managing waste effectively, and involving not just hotel staff but also guests — whether they are visiting for leisure or business. All stakeholders in the hotel ecosystem share this responsibility. Moving toward a sustainable future requires shifting away from viewing sustainability as a romantic ideal; it is, in fact, an operational obligation. Looking ahead, Diaz Rios noted that regulatory frameworks like the EU Green Claims Directive are driving the hospitality sector toward verified sustainability. Within the next five years, he predicts that major hotel chains and independent properties alike will be compelled to adopt new sustainability-focused operational models. This shift is not merely regulatory — it is also a response to rising consumer demand. Guests increasingly ask for and expect verified, certified green practices, and platforms like now visibly display which hotels are undergoing continuous sustainability evaluations. Diaz Rios also reflected on the Mexican context, where the majority of inbound travelers come from the United States. While awareness levels remain uneven across both international and domestic travelers, Green Key's sustainability roadmap includes raising awareness as a foundational step. As part of the Foundation for Environmental Education, Green Key's mission extends beyond certification — it is about fostering environmental consciousness and spreading the sustainability message across all market segments. As Diaz Rios emphasized, raising awareness is the critical starting point for any meaningful shift toward sustainable practices in hospitality. Only by aligning operational accountability, certification, and consumer expectations can the industry deliver on its sustainability promises.
