From Fighter Jets To Divine Wheels: Kolkata's Jagannath Chariot Gets Sukhoi Tyres

Kolkata's Lord Jagannath chariot gets new wheels from Russia's Sukhoi fighter jet after 48 years. ISKCON faced steering issues and couldn't procure Boeing tyres.
In a quintessential display of Indian 'jugaad' ingenuity, Kolkata's Lord Jagannath's chariot is getting a fresh set of wheels after 48 years – remarkably, the new tyres are sourced from Russia's Sukhoi fighter jet, designed for speeds up to 280 kmph.
The Indian concept of 'jugaad' – making do with available resources – is being applied to find a solution for Lord Jagannath's chariot. After experiencing steering problems last year, ISKCON quickly sought new wheels, a quest they've been on for 15 years.
Since Boeing tyres — ones being used to power to chariots for so long — have become difficult to procure, the organisers approached Sukhoi instead, as their diameter closely matches that of the Boeing tyres.
ISKCON Kolkata spokesperson Radharaman Das confirmed that their demand for new wheels took the company that manufactures tyres for Sukhoi fighter jets by surprise.
When contacted for a quote, the manufacturer was puzzled, asking why anyone would need Sukhoi tyres and what they'd be used for.
After explaining their requirements, ISKCON invited the manufacturers to inspect the chariot, and only then were they able to procure four Sukhoi tyres for the Rath.
The Sukhoi fighter jet tyres are currently being fitted, and soon Kolkata will see Lord Jagannath's chariot rolling on wheels designed for high-speed jets.

Final assembly line possible in India: Embraer

NEW DELHI: Brazilian aerospace major Embraer says it will increase sourcing from India and even have a final assembly line here if it gets a firm order for 200 aircraft from Indian customers. As of now, only India's biggest regional airline, Star Air, has Embraer aircraft in its fleet. However, the firm is talking to multiple airlines, including Air India and IndiGo, apart from startups, for getting orders. It has established a fully owned Indian subsidiary that will have a dedicated sourcing unit to scout for opportunities in IT, software and engineering. Embraer has nearly 50 planes across 11 aircraft types operating in the country. Stay informed with the latest business news, updates on bank holidays and public holidays . IndiGo CEO backs government policy as Emirates seeks more seats

NEW DELHI: As Indian carriers prepare to increase their share in international airtravel in and out of the country, India's largest airline IndiGo has reacted sharply to Emirates' long-standing demand for more flying rights for Dubai. "First of all, it's called a bilateral agreement, right? That means two sides have to agree on something. If one side makes more and more noise, it doesn't mean you're more and more right. It's not that if one side says, 'now we do it' - that's not how it works," IndiGo CEO Pieter Elbers said at the IATA AGM on Monday, without naming Emirates. On Sunday, Emirates Airlines president Tim Clark said: "We've been stuck with 65,000 seats in each direction (Dubai-India and vice-versa) for just over 11 years now. Fifteen years ago, the population to Dubai was about 25 lakh. This is over 80 lakh. Dubai is one of the fastest growing cities and 40% of the ethnic mix is of Indian origin." "If you look at the way the Indian community has moved to and from Dubai over the last 10 or 11 years, you can see the scale of what is not happening by not giving seats to Emirates or wherever else it may be. Indian govt has a policy at the moment of restricting capacity of foreign carriers into India, and they have their reasons for that," he said. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Treatment That Might Help You Against Knee Pain (Search Now) Knee Pain Treatment | Search Ads Undo Elbers also said Monday, "There were a massive number of flights into India and no operations by Indian operators. So, for a govt to say, 'First let's use the existing pool of traffic rights, and then look at new ones,' I think that's a completely fair and balanced approach."
