India face resilient Timor Leste in AFC Women's Asian Cup Qualifiers
Chiang Mai , Coming off a thumping victory in its tournament opener, the Indian team will look to continue the winning momentum in the AFC Women's Asian Cup 2026 Qualifiers when it takes on Timor Leste here on Sunday. HT Image
The five-team Group B is currently led by Iraq, who are on four points after a 5-2 victory over Mongolia and a 0-0 draw with Timor Leste.
India, who beat Mongolia 13-0, and Thailand, who beat Timor Leste 4-0, are on three points each.
Despite Timor Leste being ranked 158th, 32 places below Mongolia, India coach Crispin Chettri believed that the Southeast Asian side would pose a stronger challenge.
Having watched all teams in action after the first two matchdays, there's now a much clearer assessment of the remaining three opponents.
"Timor Leste are a better organised team than Mongolia, and I feel they are better organised defensively than Iraq as well. They prefer going for counter-attacks. They don't mind keeping the ball either," Chettri said.
"So, in patches, they are good. But as Thailand dominated the match completely, we can't say much about their attack. But they have got pace in their team as well."
Chettri and his coaching staff were in attendance at the 700th Anniversary of Chiang Mai Stadium on Thursday as Timor Leste kept 46th-ranked Thailand to four goals.
India, ranked 70, have never faced Timor Leste before.
Coached by Indonesian Emral bin Bustamam, Timor Leste have been more active in international football as compared to Mongolia. They finished fourth in the 2024 AFF Women's Cup, where they drew against Laos and Singapore.
They have played in four editions of the ASEAN Women's Championship, and the 2-1 win over Singapore in 2019 remains the only official victory in their history. The 0-0 draw with Iraq on Monday was their first-ever point in an AFC competition.
India utilised their five-day break to recover and prepare for the tighter schedule ahead, with three matches in a week. The Blue Tigresses had two morning training sessions on Tuesday and Thursday, and two sessions on Friday and Saturday.
"I think when you have a tournament of four matches, this kind of rest helps in team building. Tactically, we worked on a few things which maybe we didn't do well in the first match.
"We had four training sessions to work on that. So, I think that has helped us a lot in preparing for our upcoming matches and specifically for certain teams also," said Chettri.
There was no training on Wednesday as Chettri gave complete rest to the players, allowing them time to refresh, something the coach believes is necessary between games.
"For me, recovery and staying outside football for a certain time is important. When you are in a tournament with high pressure and playing back-to-back matches, sometimes getting out of the football zone, being yourself, and not thinking about the game is helpful, I believe," the India coach said.
"Players will come out more focused in the next day's training session. They will put in more effort, and I think that will help them cope mentally too," said Chettri.

McCutchen and Reynolds hit game-breaking doubles as Pirates pull away for 9-2 win over Mets
Jun 29, 2025 09:20 AM IST PITTSBURGH — Andrew McCutchen and Bryan Reynolds hit consecutive two-run doubles during a six-run eighth inning Saturday as the Pittsburgh Pirates pulled away for a 9-2 victory over the New York Mets. HT Image The Pirates led 3-2 when Ke'Bryan Hayes singled in a run before McCutchen and Reynols broke open the game. Hayes also had an RBI single in a three-run second that put Pittsburgh ahead 3-1. The game was delayed for 89 minutes during the top of the second with the Mets leading 1-0. The Pirates lifted starter Bailey Falter after the wait. However, the Mets stuck with Paul Blackburn when play resumed and he gave up five straight singles to start the bottom of the second. Mets manager Carlos Mendoza removed Blackburn after the fifth hit. Mendoza didn't stick around much longer, as he was ejected in the fourth by plate umpire Roberto Ortiz for arguing balls and strikes. Braxton Ashcraft relieved Falter and allowed one run in 2 2/3 innings. The Pirates will try to sweep the three-game series Sunday. The Mets have lost 12 of their last 15 games. McCutchen, Hayes, Joey Bart and Nick Gonzales each had two hits for the Pirates. New York got two hits apiece from Pete Alonso and Brandon Nimmo. The Mets struck quickly when Francisco Lindor led off the game with a double and scored on Juan Soto's single. They cut their deficit to 3-2 on Nimmo's RBI single in the fifth. The Mets put the leadoff man on base in the eighth, trailing 3-2, but Caleb Ferguson got Tyrone Taylor to hit into a double play and Brett Baty to ground out. McCutchen played in his 2,200th career game and is the active MLB leader. The series concludes Sunday with Mets RHP Frankie Montas making his second start of the season, facing RHP Mike Burrows . Carlsen welcomes Praggnanandhaa to Team Liquid; Nakamura hails Indian prodigy as ‘rare gem of chess world'
Norway's Magnus Carlsen and USA's Hikaru Nakamura, the top two highest-ranked players in chess, have congratulated R. Praggnanandhaa and sung the praises of the Chennai Grandmaster after he was signed by Esports Organisation Team Liquid on Saturday. The Norwegian maestro, who is also a part of Team Liquid alongside the USA's Fabiano Caruana, has welcomed the Indian. On X, he wrote, Whole lot of letters in Praggnanandhaa, but no «I» Welcome to the team🤝.' Whole lot of letters in Praggnanandhaa, but no «I» Welcome to the team🤝 — Magnus Carlsen (@MagnusCarlsen) June 28, 2025 The inclusion of Praggnanandhaa in the Team Liquid makes them one of the strongest Esports teams in the chess world. The World No. 2 and arguably the most famous esports athlete in chess — who has promoted this sport in the online world — Nakamura called the Indian a rare gem. Posting a reply to Team Liquid's announcement post on X, Nakamura wrote, 'Pragg is a rare gem in the chess world.' Massive congrats to @rpraggnachess and @TeamLiquid – Pragg is a rare gem in the chess world! — Hikaru Nakamura (@GMHikaru) June 28, 2025 The wave of these signings comes after chess was actively promoted as an Esports, with the traditional board game evolving itself into an online game and getting included in the upcoming Esports World Cup (EWC), set to happen in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia. Besides Praggnanandhaa, multiple Indian stars have signed contracts with Esports organisations. Arjun Erigaisi was among the first few players in the world to sign such a contract. He signed the deal with Gen.G. Earlier, Nihal Sarin and Aravindh Chithambaram also signed contracts with the Indian Esports organisation S8UL. So far, Arjun is the only player to have assured himself a spot in the Esports World Cup, which has spots for only 16 players. Both Carlsen and Caruana are also among the 12 grandmasters who have qualified. The others are Hikaru Nakamura (Team Falcons), Alireza Firouzja (Team Falcons), Ian Nepomniachtchi (Aurora), Nodirbek Abdusattorov (NAVI), Maxime Vachier-Lagrave (Team Vitality), Jan-Krzysztof Duda (Twisted Minds), Wei Yi (Weibo), Vladislav Artemiev (Team Spirit), and Vladimir Fedoseev. Praggnanandhaa will represent Team Liquid for the Last Chance Qualifiers, which will see some heavy-hitters in action trying to secure one of the four remaining spots. This includes former world champion Ding Liren (LGD), Wesley So (NAVI), Oleksandr Bortnyk (NAVI), Anish Giri (Team Secret) and Daniil Dubov (Team Spirit). The Esports World Cup will be an event where the world's biggest esports clubs compete across 24 of the most popular esports titles. For the first time, the World Cup will also feature chess, which will be played online. The first edition of the Esports World Cup was held in 2024 and saw teams compete over eight weeks. The Esports World Cup 2025 is set to be the largest multi-title esports event in history, which is expected to have at least 2,000 players and 200 teams competing for a combined prize pool of $70 million (approx. Rs 602 crore). Chess was also included as an Esports at the Khelo India Youth Games 2025 in Patna.
