OVERNIGHT: Clouds scatter with partial clearing toward morning. Cool for the season with low 40s chilliest inland locations. Winds: East 4-12 mph. Low: 44.
🥶 WGN Weather Producer Bill Snyder explains science behind our cooler temperatures
The long holiday weekend will open on a chilly note, with upper 30s and low 40s for much of Chicagoland. Even colder air will be prominent to our north where low 30s are likely from Minnesota into Michigan. Frost advisories are in effect for portions of Wisconsin, Minnesota and the U.P of Michigan.
A center of high pressure will sit across northern Wisconsin north and deliver a generous amount of sunshine along with high in the 60s again inland, even close to 70 degrees for areas far south and southwest of Chicago. Lake breezes will mean another day of 50s for areas close to Lake Michigan.
Chicago beaches opened officially on Friday, but the current chilly temperature regime will certainly keep most from heading into the water until further notice despite the fact that the swim risk is low and wave heights are likely to be no worse than 1 foot.
Despite the cooler temperatures, the sun is strong this time of year and can result in a sunburn in about 20 minutes during peak time at 1pm without proper protection.
Comfortable late May temperatures continue in the 60s and 70s across the northern 2/3 of the Lower 48. The real summer heat stays south across Texas, Florida, and portions of the Gulf Coast.

Tranquil and largely unvarying weather conditions throughout the holiday weekend with partly to mostly sunny skies. Next chance of rain doesn't arrive until later Tuesday afternoon.
While it will be quiet and rain-free here thanks to a ridge of high pressure, heavy rain is back across the central Plains from Oklahoma City to Tulsa to Little Rock, Arkansas and Memphis. 3-4' for most, but a few in Southwest Missouri may see up to 6'.
While temperatures will remain below normal, the deficits begin to shrink as we move later into next week.
The ridge over Canada continues to act like an atmospheric block and allow cool troughs to dip southward into the Great Lakes and Northeast with cool shots.
May 23 through 27: The epicenter of the largest temperature shortfall, nearly 10-degrees below normal, is forecast from the Chicagoland area east into western Pennsylvania.
May 28 through June 2: While the deficits aren't quite as impressive as recent days, the area of sub-normal temperatures is forecast to cover the entire Central and Eastern U.S.
June 3 through June 7: No heat waves, but temperatures return near or even slightly above normal across the Great Lakes and Northeast, a big improvement from recent days.
Widespread showers and thunderstorms will be present across the Plains, Texas, into the Tennessee River Valley and Southeast. For the Chicago area, the best chance of seeing any rainfall will come later Tuesday and Tuesday night, otherwise it looks dry.

Indiana Pacers' team flight to NBA Finals takes a detour due to tornado warning in Oklahoma City

The Indiana Pacers' journey to the NBA Finals was never going to be easy, but it got a little more complicated, and it had nothing to do with basketball. The team's flight bound for Oklahoma City for a Game 1 tilt with the Thunder was detoured by literal thunder and forced to land in Tulsa, Oklahoma, due to a tornado warning in the capital Tuesday afternoon. 'The Pacers team plane circled due to the weather in Oklahoma City and subsequently landed in Tulsa to re-fuel,' a representative for the team said. The Pacers have since told CNN that the team jet has departed Tulsa to complete its journey to Oklahoma City. 'We're appreciative of the efforts made by the Delta pilots and crew, and hope everyone in Oklahoma City and the surrounding affected areas remained safe,' the team said in its updated statement. CNN has reached out to the NBA for comment on the situation. The Pacers are playing for a championship for the first time since 2000, when the team lost to the Los Angeles Lakers in the franchise's one and only NBA Finals appearance. The Pacers' path to the Finals included victories over the Milwaukee Bucks, the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers, and a six-game defeat of the New York Knicks in the Eastern Conference Finals. The Thunder meanwhile are appearing in their first NBA Finals since 2012, where they lost to the Miami Heat. The franchise's only NBA championship came in 1979, when the team was known as the Seattle SuperSonics. The Western Conference's No. 1 seed, the Thunder, advanced to the Finals with a sweep against the Memphis Grizzlies, a seven-game epic against the Denver Nuggets, and most recently a five-game win over the Minnesota Timberwolves. The best-of-seven NBA Finals begins with Game 1 Thursday night in Oklahoma City. CNN's Angela Fritz contributed to this report

Fire burns large home in Oakland Hills, destroys portion of building

A fire in the Oakland Hills Tuesday afternoon left a home with significant damage, the Fire Department said. In a social media post, the department said the two-alarm fire burned a home on Skyline Boulevard just north of Hansom Drive and about a half mile south of Fire Station 21. The fire started in the garage of the home, listed on Redfin as a 3,022 square-foot estate, and spread to the main house, but firefighters were able to contain it to just the one house, the post said. Update 1) Fire crews have contained this 2 alarm incident in the 13000 block of Skyline to the structure of origin but this is still an active fire incident. Traffic should avoid Skyline Blvd b/w Parkridge Dr and Keller Rd. No reports of injuries at this time. — Oakland Fire Department (CA) (@OaklandFireCA) June 3, 2025 Video shot from above the home showed the fire gutted the garage area. Firefighters were atop the main house, cutting holes in the roof to let out smoke and heat. Some three dozen firefighters responded to the fire. There were no reported injuries, and the cause of the fire was not immediately known. Traffic along Skyline Boulevard between Parkridge Drive and Keller Road was affected during the firefight and mop-up efforts.

Hazy Skies Continue as Heat and Humidity Build Across Maryland

Canadian wildfire smoke will keep skies hazy overnight across Maryland, with temperatures falling into the 50s and 60s. While the smoke will be visible, most of it will remain at high altitudes and have little impact on air quality at the surface. Wednesday will bring more sunshine and continued haze as the upper-level smoke persists. Temperatures will soar into the upper 80s to near 90 degrees. Some locations may hit the 90-degree mark for the first time this year. The heat continues Thursday, but cloud cover will increase, and humidity will become more noticeable. Highs will again push into the upper 80s, with a muggy feel returning to the atmosphere. Friday will feature a mix of sun and clouds, with a few isolated storms possible across western Maryland late in the day. Baltimore and the I-95 corridor are expected to stay dry. Afternoon highs will reach the mid to upper 80s. The best chance for widespread rain arrives Saturday as a cold front pushes into the region. Expect scattered showers and a few storms, with highs cooling slightly into the upper 70s to low 80s. The front will move out of the area by early Sunday, setting the stage for a beautiful end to the weekend. Sunshine returns Sunday afternoon with lower humidity and highs in the low 80s. Looking ahead, the weather turns unsettled again next week. Showers and thunderstorms are possible Monday and Tuesday, with highs near 80 degrees each day. Forecast confidence drops beyond Sunday, so stay tuned to WJZ for updates as we continue to refine the timing and coverage of next week's rain chances.
