Francis Lui struggles to split five-strong team in Classic Cup: ‘it's hard to say'

Francis Lui Kin-wai can't split his five runners in Sunday's Classic Cup (1,800m) as the reigning champion trainer prepares an all-out assault on the second leg of the four-year-old series.
Lui will be the first handler to have five Classic Cup starters since John Moore, who achieved the feat in 2012 when he won with Zaidan and in 2014 when Designs On Rome led home a trifecta for him.
While Lui boasts over a third of the 14-horse field, this year's Classic Cup looms as one of the most open in years.
Packing Angel is viewed as perhaps the veteran handler's top contender, coming off three consecutive victories, while Divano is fresh from a staggering run in the Classic Mile when storming home from last to run a close second to My Wish.
Packing Hermod had every chance in the Classic Mile but finished third as favourite. Cap Ferrat was trapped wide throughout in the same race and is capable of bouncing back, while Steps Ahead rounds out Lui's squad after scoring at the course and distance last start.
'It's hard to say because they all keep improving after every run. They've all got a chance,' said Lui, who won the race with champion galloper Golden Sixty in 2020 and Hello Pretty in 2006.
Lui will utilise four of the overseas jockeys who are in town for the Sha Tin meeting on Sunday, headlined by Brazilian star Joao Moreira aboard Packing Angel.
The son of Melbourne Cup (3,200m) winner Shocking has burst onto the scene with three strong wins, but quickly rises from 1,400m to 1,800m at start seven.
Lui is hoping Moreira weaves his magic and secures a clear run in the straight after Packing Angel drew the inside gate.
'I can't say it's the best draw because sometimes they can get stuck inside, but it's better than drawing out wide,' he said.
'In his last two runs, he drew out wide and got a fast enough pace for him to travel comfortably. This time, the field is more open so that's why I would say the inside draw is better than outside.'
Blake Shinn made the intriguing call to hop off Divano to ride Packing Hermod, with Briton Tom Marquand replacing him on the former.
Classy as! 👏
My Wish staves off challengers to capture the first #4YOSeries leg - the HK$13 million Hong Kong Classic Mile - with @LukeFerraris for Mark Newnham... #LoveRacing | #HKracing pic.twitter.com/Zl6reIm7X3 — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) January 31, 2025
Divano has drawn wide in barrier 11 while Packing Hermod has also drawn out in 13.
'I hope Divano can run well again,' Lui said. 'He's the kind of horse that has to relax in the early part, then he has a good turn of foot in the straight.
'Packing Hermod is in good form, he just needs time to accelerate in the straight.'
Craig Williams will ride Cap Ferrat, who faded to run 12th in the Classic Mile after a tough run throughout.
Second behind Classic Cup rival Mickley on his only other Hong Kong start, Cap Ferrat has also been dealt a double-figure draw in 10.
However, he should relish the rise in trip after placings in the Group Three Gloaming Stakes (1,800m), Group One Spring Champion Stakes (2,000m) and Group One Rosehill Guineas (2,000m) in Australia pre-import.
'He was wide all the way,' Lui said of Cap Ferrat's last start.
'According to his form in Australia, he's a Classic Series horse, but he's only had two runs here. I hope he can run well.'
Steps Ahead might be rated the lowest of Lui's team, but he has been a model of consistency with two wins and two seconds this term.
'He's an honest horse. It's hard to know his quality, but we take it step by step,' Lui said.
Lyle Hewitson will ride Steps Ahead, who has drawn barrier six.

Britney Wong doubles up again at Sha Tin as Cheval Valiant leads them a merry dance
Britney Wong Po-ni landed consecutive Sha Tin doubles headlined by Cheval Valiant's all-the-way win in the Class Four Lai On Handicap (1,000m) at Sha Tin on Sunday. The 26-year-old smashed out of the gates on the Charm Spirit galloper and never looked back, crossing over to the stands rail from gate nine and setting comfortable fractions on the front end. When the pair were faced by a myriad of challengers in the final 200m, Wong galvanised her willing partner and gamely fended off $57 roughie Straight To Glory and $6.8 second favourite Lahore by a neck. It was the second straight double for Wong and the fourth consecutive winning meeting for the 10lb apprentice, who was teaming up with the horse that provided her with her first Hong Kong win back in September. Britney Wong grabs a double! ✌️ Cheval Valiant was the apprentice's first winner in Hong Kong last year and today she's back aboard @DJWhyteTrainer's galloper successfully at Sha Tin... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 'He was my first win and I know him very well,' said Wong of the Douglas Whyte-trained Cheval Valiant. 'Thank you to Mr Whyte for putting me back on because I had to chase this ride, actually, and I'm happy that everything has gone well today and I have had another win. I'm very happy.' There was a huge sting in the tail post race, however, with Wong copping a three-day ban and HK$15,000 fine for careless riding in the early stages. Earlier, Wong got the card off to the perfect start in combination with Manfred Man Ka-leung for the second consecutive Sha Tin meeting when Ruby Sailing was another gate-to-wire winner in the Class Five Chak On Handicap (1,200m). Ruby Sailing is not for catching! 🔥 Apprentice Britney Wong drives the Starspangledbanner gelding to a first win for Manfred Man at Sha Tin... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 It was a maiden victory at the 20th attempt for the son of Starspangledbanner, who showed tremendous early speed to lead from gate eight and never looked in danger of being caught. Wong got serious at the 400m pole and the pair surged into an unassailable lead, winning by one and a quarter lengths from fast-finishing $2.4 favourite King Oberon. Elsewhere, French ace Antoine Hamelin notched another timely winner thanks to Sky Prophet's upset win at $19.2 in the Class Five Chung On Handicap (1,400m). The Casper Fownes-trained four-year-old was made to work hard to get to the lead from barrier 13, but once there Hamelin controlled the fractions to a tee. Sky Prophet won't quit! 💥 Tough first win for the Caspar Fownes trainee at Sha Tin with @AntoineHamelin as he narrowly denies a rampaging Only U in a thriller... #SummerSeries | #HKracing — HKJC Racing (@HKJC_Racing) June 8, 2025 The pair looked vulnerable to Lapras turning in, but after fending off that rival in a protracted duel, they had just enough to scramble home ahead of the desperately unlucky $1.8 favourite Only U, who lashed home and only missed by a head after a torrid passage. 'It's nice to get a winner today – it's hot, but it's less hot when you win,' said Hamelin. 'I think the horse was in good form and didn't deserve to be so long in the odds. I believed in him [and] I thought he was a chance, the only concern was the draw. 'But he had a good start, he led, he controlled the race and he held that to the line.' Hamelin will depart Hong Kong and return to France at the end of this season, but he will be giving his all until the end of the season. 'I will just do my best to the end. It's hard to plan a target a month before I leave but I will just do my best and try to get as many winners as I can before I leave,' said the jockey.

Hong Kong hails ‘overwhelming support' for legalising basketball betting, proposes 50% levy on profits
The Hong Kong government has hailed 'overwhelming support' from scholars, athletes, and youth groups for its plan to legalise basketball betting in the city, following the conclusion of a one-month public consultation last month. Ninety-four per cent of the 1,063 submissions received by the government between April and May 'expressed support or positive views' on the proposal to regulate basketball betting under the Betting Duty Ordinance, according to a paper submitted by the Home and Youth Affairs Bureau to the Legislative Council on Thursday. Those who supported the legal amendment said public demand for basketball betting has 'increased significantly,' and a regulatory regime can protect bettors' rights and interests. The government proposed in April to amend the ordinance to grant the Secretary for Home and Youth Affairs the power to issue a basketball betting license to the Hong Kong Jockey Club (HKJC). The regulatory regime will mirror the existing one for football betting, the government said. In the paper released on Thursday, the government proposed imposing a 50 per cent levy on the net profits from basketball betting. Citing responses from supporters of the legislative proposal, the government said the HKJC may donate its additional revenue to welfare and charitable purposes. The tax revenue generated may also help the government allocate more resources on social welfare, supporters said, according to the government. Financial Secretary Paul Chan first unveiled the government's intention to regulate basketball betting during his 2025 budget speech in February. He said the legalisation could tackle illegal gambling and raise tax revenue amid the city's estimated deficit of HK$87.2 billion. The finance chief projected that regulating basketball betting could generate HK$1.5 billion to HK$2 billion in tax revenue. The government acknowledged on Thursday that 36 submissions – or 3.4 per cent of the responses collected – opposed the proposal. Those who objected raised concerns about the adverse impact of basketball betting on the youth, adding illegal gambling still existed after football betting was legalised. Responding to the concerns, the government said in the paper that the impact of betting activities on young people has been 'steady' in recent years. The proportion of bettors aged between 18 and 21 also 'consistently remained below two per cent,' the government said quoting the HKJC. Some suggested the government to prohibit individuals aged between 18 and 25 from placing bets online, while others proposed imposing restrictions on the amount and number of bets that can be placed by young people. The paper submitted on Thursday is set to be discussed by lawmakers on the Legislative Council's Panel on Home Affairs, Culture and Sports on Monday. 'Disastrous move' In February, the Hong Kong Committee on Children's Rights criticised the government's plan to regulate basketball betting, saying that giving a green light to basketball betting was a 'disastrous move.' The group said popularising sports betting could 'lure' young people to bet with their limited financial resources that should otherwise go to other needs. Gambling loss may also result in psychological pressure and guilt, which may deter individuals from seeking help, it said, warning that gamblers could enter a 'vicious cycle' where they turn to lending agencies or engage in criminal activities.

Brazil held by Ecuador in Ancelotti coaching debut
Brazil held by Ecuador in Ancelotti coaching debut It was a rocky start for Carlo Ancelotti in his debut for Brazil. Photo: Reuters Carlo Ancelotti's debut as coach of Brazil ended in a goalless draw in Ecuador in South American World Cup qualifying. The 65-year-old Italian, who left Real Madrid at the end of the European season, has been charged with taking Brazil through the latter stages of qualifying for the 2026 World Cup. The former AC Milan and Chelsea manager replaced Dorival Junior, who was sacked at the end of March after the 4-1 thrashing at the hands of reigning champions and bitter rivals Argentina. Thursday's result leaves the Selecao in fourth place in the qualifying table on 22 points while Ecuador, the surprise package in the campaign, remain in second place on 24 points. Argentina, who face Chile later on Thursday, lead the standings on 32 points and are the only team to have officially secured their place in the tournament which will be held in the USA, Canada and Mexico. Paraguay, who enjoyed a 2-0 win over Marcelo Bielsa's Uruguay, sit in third place, level on points with Ecuador. Ecuador knew a win would put them on the brink of qualification and there was a packed crowd at the Estadio Monumental in Guayaquil. But the home side were dealt a blow just before kick-off when goalkeeper Hernan Galindez suffered a muscle strain in the warm-up and replacement Gonzalo Valle was hurriedly sent out to make his debut. If Valle had any nerves they eased when he did well to parry a shot from inside the box from Vinicius Jr. who had been set up by Gerson following a turnover. Chances were limited in a contest where neither side was able to get control of midfield. The pattern continued after the break with Ecuador, missing their injured striker and talisman Enner Valencia, struggling to pose a threat. Real Madrid star Vinicius was quiet for much of the game and with Rodrygo absent, Brazil also lacked potency in attack. The best opening came in the 75th minute when Vinicius broke down the left and cut back to Casemiro, but the Manchester United midfielder, recalled to the national side by Ancelotti, saw a tame side-footed effort easily dealt with by Valle. While there was no instant impact from Ancelotti, Vinicius, who played under the coach in Madrid, said he needed time to make his impact felt. "I'm very happy to have Ancelotti here with us, because I've always said he's the best coach I've ever worked with. Having the opportunity to work with him in the Brazilian national team is the best," the winger said. "He hasn't had time to show his work, his game plan, because he's only had two or three days of training," he added. A header from midfielder Matías Galarza just 13 minutes into the game and a late penalty from Julio Enciso earned Paraguay a crucial victory over a depleted Uruguay. The victory left Paraguay on the verge of securing their return to the World Cup for the first time since qualifying for the 2010 finals in South Africa. Victory in Sao Paulo on Tuesday against Brazil would secure their place in the tournament. The top six teams in the 10-team qualifying group head directly into the World Cup draw, while the seventh placed team must enter the inter-confederation playoffs. (AFP)
