BBC Radio 6 Music announces spring and summer programming

BBC News01-05-2025
Early June sees the return of Mary Anne Hobbs to 6 Music, who will present a brand new show on Sundays, 6-8pm, from 8th June. Mary Anne's new programme will be home to a borderless world of music, featuring open conversation with some of the world's most fascinating artists. Features will include Directors Cut – an invitation to musicians to create a specially extended version of an album track, exclusively for Mary Anne, and End of Days – in which artists select a piece of music for future generations.
Mary Anne says: 'It's a joy to return home to 6 Music, and pull-up next to my teenage hero Iggy Pop. The new show will be a home for music across all spectrums, outliers to headliners. Open conversations with the Artists we love. New experiments in storytelling and sound. Come with us.'
Tom Robinson, who currently hosts Now Playing @6Music on Sundays (6-8pm) will remain on the station. From Monday 2nd – Thursday 5th June, 11pm-12am, Tom will present a series of specials as part of 6 Music's annual Loud & Proud season, which takes place each June and sees the station spotlight LGBTQ+ voices with a season of specials, day-long celebrations, guest presenters and more. Tom's series will see him interview John Grant, Peggy Seeger and more. Tom will also be sitting in for Steve Lamacq on Monday 26th May, and Huw Stephens from Tuesday 27th – Friday 30th May, and Tuesday 26th – Friday 29th August.
Tom says: 'It's been a privilege to host programmes every week on 6 Music since the station began in 2002. Our listeners' passion for fresh, adventurous music has seen us through thick and thin - and eventually helped us become the biggest digital station in the country. Their love and support for the artists we introduced on my own shows over the last 23 years also helped many music careers. And I'm deeply grateful to our NowPlaying community for regularly sharing their expertise, and hilarious snippets of kitchen life, in recent years. Although I'm now handing on the Sunday night baton, I'll still be presenting various shows on 6 Music in the coming months - including my exciting new interview series for our Loud & Proud season in June."
Tom Ravenscroft, who presents New Music Fix Daily with Deb Grant (Mondays – Thursdays, 7-9pm) and The Ravers Hour (Fridays, 11pm-12am) has made the decision to leave 6 Music at the end of May, as he moves on to a new chapter of his life. Tom's final New Music Fix Daily show will be Thursday 29th May, and his final edition of The Ravers Hour will be Friday 30th May.
Tom says: 'Argh man, this is a sad moment. It is with a heavy heart that I have decided to depart 6 Music but pastures new beckon. It's been a blast, I've met so many wonderful people as a result of this job and will be forever grateful. Thanks to all the crew on New Music Fix Daily and Deb for the past two years in Salford, I think we did some cool stuff. Lots of love to the listeners and everyone who has ever sent me music. I will miss it all. Forever yours. Tom.'
Samantha Moy, Head of BBC Radio 6 Music, says: 'On behalf of us all at 6 Music, I want to thank Tom Ravenscroft for his huge contribution to 6 Music over the years – for his work spotlighting formidable electronic artists with his own shows, including the peerless Ravers Hour, as well as shaping the sound of our evenings with New Music Fix Daily and his incredible series, Peel Acres. He is quite simply a 6 Music legend: iridescent and irreplaceable - we will all miss him.'
Joining Deb Grant to present New Music Fix Daily from Monday 2nd June (7-9pm) is Nathan Shepherd. Nathan will continue to present Indie Forever on Fridays (9-11pm), which was recently nominated for an Audio and Radio Industry Award (ARIA) and a New York Festivals Radio Award.
Nathan says: "All my life I've been passionate about new music. Without new music there's no future in music. I'm so excited to be a part of the New Music Fix Daily team and to present alongside the amazing Deb Grant."
Deb says: 'Nathan is an excellent broadcaster, with great musical perspective and I'm so excited to welcome him to the New Music Fix Daily fold. It's been such a fun and hilarious two years with Tom – I'm going to miss his humour and brilliant music selections. The team and I want to send him all our best wishes for the future."
During their first week together, Nathan and Deb will present five editions of New Music Fix Daily, including two specials broadcast live from Primavera Sound music festival in Barcelona, Spain (Thursday 5th and Friday 6th June, 7-9pm). Nathan and Deb will bring listeners their guide to this year's must-see acts, interviews with Bristol rockers IDLES and 6 Music's SHERELLE, a guest mix from Welsh electronic musician and producer Kelly Lee Owens, acoustic sessions from Spanish indie rock band Hinds and Brooklyn alt-rock band Momma, highlights from the BRIT Award-nominated, indie pop artist beabadoobee's performance at the festival, and more. Nathan will also present his Indie Forever show on Friday 6th June (9-11pm) live from Primavera Sound.
Coming to 6 Music and BBC iPlayer in the coming months are two more editions of Artist in Residence: AAA from Bon Iver and CMAT.
Bon Iver's Artist in Residence: AAA will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Monday 19th May. The exclusive short film, recorded at Maida Vale Studios, will see Justin Vernon break down tracks from his most recent album, SABLE, fABLE, with his producer and long-time collaborator Jim-E Stack. A new radio series of Artist in Residence from Bon Iver will accompany the filmed special and will air on 6 Music from Monday 19th – Thursday 22nd May, 11pm-12am.
CMAT's Artist in Residence: AAA will be available on BBC iPlayer from 6am on Monday 11th August. Also recorded at Maida Vale Studios, the episode will see the Irish singer and songwriter dig into the making of tracks from her forthcoming album, EURO-COUNTRY, with producer Oli Deakin, and revisit a classic from her back catalogue. CMAT will also present an Artist in Residence radio series for 6 Music (Monday 11th – Thursday 14th August, 11pm-12am).
CMAT says: 'I listen to 6 Music every day in a way that is quite embarrassing for someone who gets played on it quite often. I also love to talk about music. So this is quite the dream come true!"
Bon Iver and CMAT's episodes of Artist in Residence: AAA, follows those from Mitski (November 2023) and Loyle Carner (November 2022).
Samantha Moy, Head of BBC Radio 6 Music, says "It gives me great pleasure to give the warmest welcome home to Mary Anne Hobbs. With the complete freedom to fill her new show with her impeccable music selections, I know that listeners will love what she has in store for Sunday evenings. I'm very pleased to say that Tom Robinson remains part of the 6 Music family, and in June, will take a leading role in our Loud & Proud season. And - finally - two years on from when he first joined the station – it's wonderful to say that we'll now be able to hear Nathan Shepherd's energy and passion for music each weekday evening as he joins Deb as our co-host of New Music Fix Daily in June."

Tom Kerridge says one high street restaurant is his favourite for two reasons

Celebrity chef Tom Kerridge has admitted that he avoids most high street chain restaurants - but there's one in particular he has a soft spot for after a 'funny date night' with his wife Celebrated chef Tom Kerridge has confessed to having a soft spot for the high street chain Nando's, despite generally steering clear of most chains. ‌ On Russell Howard's podcast 'Russell Howard's Five Brilliant Things', the culinary star revealed his unexpected preference for the well-known fast food joint. ‌ Tom remarked: "To be honest, no. I try to avoid them. If you've got restaurants, you want to eat in them, you normally go there. If you mean like McDonald's and KFC I never, I don't have them. I don't mind a Nando's though I got to be honest. Nando's is alright." ‌ Tom added: "It's a bit of a funny date night for me and my wife. So we've got a young son, he's nine, so if we get a night out and we live in Marlow. "We got a posh Everyman (a cinema chain) open in Marlow, but before that there was the ones up in High Wickham and we would go for a cheeky Nando's and then a movie. That was a date night out, yeah, Nando's High Wycombe." ‌ The 52-year-old chef highlighted another perk of dining at Nando's, beyond its suitability for a relaxed family evening. He added: "That's the beautiful thing. You go to Nandos no-one knows who you are, no-one cares. It doesn't matter. They're not looking at who are the Michelin-starred chefs in Nandos. No-one knows who you are, that's what I like about a Nando's." In addition to his views on casual dining, Tom has been vocal about the significant challenges currently facing the hospitality sector, reports Gloucestershire Live. ‌ Amid the cost-of-living crisis, there's also been a surge in energy prices, leading to venues hiking their fees and inadvertently fuelling a cost-of-socialising crisis. In these tough times, restaurateurs like Tom are caught between a rock and a hard place, striving to serve top-notch food at fair prices while remembering they've got a business to sustain and staff grappling with the same financial pressures. Earlier this year, he expressed his deep appreciation for his team, calling them the lifeblood of his enterprise. Chatting with the Guardian, he referred to his establishment as a "socialist space" where everyone's role is crucial. He elaborated: "A pot washer, that's the beating heart, that's the engineering, because a chef can't work without pans. Housekeeping is vital ... because if they forget to make a bedroom up and a guest walks into a messy room, that now puts a huge amount of pressure on the rest of the business because we have to look after those guests in a completely new way." Catch episode three of Tom Kerridge Cooks Spain on ITV tonight (Thursday, August 8) at 8.30pm.

Kelsey Parker on finding the strength to make it through unbelievable tragedy

Kelsey Parker has suffered more tragedy in her young life than most people would have to deal with in a lifetime. The entrepreneur and podcaster endured the nightmare of seeing her husband, The Wanted singer Tom Parker, battle and eventually die from a brain tumour at the age of just 33, three years ago. Advertisement And after finding love again with tree surgeon Will Lindsay, she became pregnant – but her new-found happiness was destroyed in June when her baby, Phoenix, was stillborn just a week before his due date. View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kelsey Parker (@being_kelsey) Yet despite such incredible heartbreak, Parker, 35, is finding the strength to carry on, for the sake of her beloved children Aurelia, aged six, and Bodhi, four, and through her spirituality. 'My spirituality helps so much, because if I didn't have this, I don't know how I would get through a day,' she reveals. 'I feel Phoenix, and I look for the signs, and I feel like he's with me and the kids all the time. I am so happy that I found spirituality, because that's helped me through this massively. And I think that if I didn't find that on the journey with Tom, I would be so lost right now.' Advertisement Parker, who was in a relationship with Tom for 13 years and married him four years before his death in 2022, says her children are what make her carry on. 'Even with Phoenix, I had to get up the next day and be a mum,' she says. 'My kids are my saving grace – they get me out of bed in the morning. They've been through so much – they're four and six and they've lived such a life already, that life has to continue for them.' Life has to go on without their daddy, of course – but what have they been told about what happened to him and their baby brother? View this post on Instagram A post shared by Sands - baby loss charity (@sandscharity) 'That Phoenix is now an angel in the sky with Daddy, and Daddy's now looking after him,' says Parker. Advertisement 'It is what I believe. When you say everything happens for a reason, oh my God, that's really hard to think. But there's got to be a purpose, there needs to be something to get you through, and it's whatever you believe, isn't it? 'We're not just dying and not going on to anything else. I get signs all the time, so there's no way that when you die that you're just gone. There's absolutely no way. So that's where spirituality comes into it, because it's all about the journey of the soul.' Parker, who hosts the Mum's the Word podcast with her best pal Georgia Jones, wife of McFly singer Danny Jones, explains that she found spirituality when Tom was dying and she was searching for a way to come to terms with the terrible situation her little family found itself in. She says: 'When Tom was still here, I had to find something, because I was like 'this is so cruel'. I was 35 weeks pregnant with Bodhi and I had Aurelia who was only coming on 15 months, and I thought how can life be this cruel to us, how can this be happening for us? Advertisement 'We had the perfect life, and it obviously got flipped upside down. And then, by finding spirituality, you know that when they've gone, what reason they've gone for, and it gives you that bit of peace.' When Tom – who was also a 'massive, massive believer' – died, Parker says his soul left his body, but she stresses: 'I could feel his soul leave him, but his energy is still here. We learn it in science – energy can't be destroyed. It can only be transferred. Tom and Kelsey Parker (Stefan Rousseau/PA) 'I just think, when we look at the world around us, there's got to be more to it than you live and you die and that's it.' Nevertheless, because they can't see Tom any more, photographs have brought comfort to the family. Pictures of Tom and Phoenix are incredibly precious to Parker, and that's why she's supporting the Virgin Media O2 and Hubbub Community Calling initiative to encourage people to donate unwanted, working smartphones to those who need them, after first backing up photos and videos on the old phones so they're not lost forever. Advertisement Virgin Media O2 research estimates there are a whopping 123 million unused devices gathering dust in drawers in the UK, and 46% of people are holding on to them due to sentimentality about the 27.7 billion memories they contain. 'I know when you have a device, you don't want to get rid of it because you feel like it holds so many memories,' says Parker. 'But this is a magical campaign, because when you back pictures up and make memory books, then what use is the old phone when it could help others? 'They're a lifeline for people who are homeless, or women fleeing domestic abuse, or even for those in my situation who need to speak to a bereavement nurse.' Parker has backed up her old phones and donated them to Community Calling, and adds: 'I've got pictures of Phoenix, and it was Tom's birthday on Monday, so I shared videos and photos of him on my Instagram, because that's how you remember people that aren't here any more.' But photographs don't assuage grief, so how is she coping with her double loss? 'It's three-and-a-half years down the line,' she says, 'and now I'm living with grief again, and it's a different kind of grief. But I've got to be strong and I've got to try and move forward and live my life for Phoenix.' View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kelsey Parker (@being_kelsey) And she says her children seem to grasp that they won't be meeting their baby brother or seeing their daddy again. 'They completely understand everything,' she says confidently. 'Aurelia has been here before – I always think about it. She's been sent to me because she understands absolutely everything. She's been really helpful this time around – even with Tom, she understood her dad wasn't coming back. 'He's with the angels.' She stresses that she has no problem talking about Tom, and in fact: 'I love talking about Tom. On his birthday, when we were celebrating him, we were talking about memories of what he'd done, and it's a beautiful thing to do. 'People suffer so much in their grief. But we're all going to deal with grief, because the one thing we're guaranteed in this life is we're all going to die. But we're absolutely terrible about talking about death – we can't cope with the fact that death happens.' And the brave mum adds, wistfully: 'Life is so precious, but it's so short. So live each day, celebrate each day that you're here. We all take life for granted.' Kelsey Parker is supporting Virgin Media O2 and Hubbub's Community Calling initiative to encourage people to donate unwanted, working smartphones to those who need them.
