Australia rugby coach Joe Schmidt backs Jake Gordon's skills but no hints on Wallabies captaincy
– Australia rugby coach Joe Schmidt has given a glowing review of Jake Gordon's importance to the Wallabies as a player, but offered no clue as to where the experienced scrum-half fits in his leadership plans for the British and Irish Lions series.
Schmidt, who will name his squad over the next two weeks, has not yet confirmed who will captain the Wallabies against the Lions, but an Australian media report said last week that it would be Gordon.
The New South Wales Waratahs skipper was left out of the squad for the last World Cup by former coach Eddie Jones – who is now in charge of Japan – but his Test career was revived by Schmidt and he started all nine Tests in 2024 ahead of Tate McDermott and Nic White.
'Jake, he's one of the leaders in the group, but so is Nic White... and Tate McDermott has been a former captain,' Schmidt told reporters in Perth.
'Jake has a really good skill set, mature player, very nice kicking game, one of the sharper passes around and he is utterly committed when he's on the grass.
'His ability to cover corners and make tackles, involved in the physical stuff, he's a multi-purpose sort of player, but at the sharp edge of his game is really his pass-kick, which were very helpful to us last year.'
The Lions play Argentina in Dublin next week before heading to Australia for six tour matches and the three-Test series in late July and early August.
Schmidt said he knew from his time as Ireland coach just how special the Lions jersey was to the players who wore it and warned that the Wallabies would really need to roll their sleeves up to be ready for the Tests.
'They can play in so many different ways,' he said of the tourists.
'They can be really physical, they can be square and coming at you. They can get you on the edges. They have got the likes of Tommy Freeman and Hugo Keenan, who are so good in the air that you're going to have to be good there.
'We can just try to work as hard as we can, to be as well-prepared to understand the threats they're going to bring, and be ready to combat them and also to try to put our stamp on the game a little bit, and take the initiative when we can.' REUTERS

ROME - Juventus have extended their technical partnership with German sportswear giant Adidas until June 2037, in a deal worth 408 million euros ($468 million) over a decade, the Serie A club said in a statement. The current agreement between the two parties, which runs until June 2027, will remain unchanged, the Italian club said. The new contract will then take effect from the 2027-2028 season and cover all Juventus teams until the end of the 2036-2037 season. "This renewal fills us with pride and testifies to the synergy between these two great companies," said Maurizio Scanavino, Juventus Chief Executive Officer. Juventus, famed for their black and white shirts, said the valuation for the new agreement does not include additional royalties for exceeding certain sales volumes or variable components linked to sporting results. "We're delighted to extend our partnership with the most decorated club in Italian football for a further 10 years," said Sam Handy, General Manager of Adidas Football. Juventus have won the Italian league title more than any other rival club. Juventus and Adidas joined forces from the 2015/2016 season. The German sportswear group has a long-term partnership in place with English Premier League club Manchester United which runs until 2035, and also works with other teams including Real Madrid and Bayern Munich. Juventus said last month that U.S. carmaker Jeep will pay 69 million euros to become its main shirt sponsor until June 2028. "We needed to make sure that Sophie Ingle was in a good place, she's still on her path to full fitness but she's in a position now where she can contribute," Wales manager Rhian Wilkinson said. The 33-year-old, who has been released by Chelsea, tore her ACL in a pre-season friendly against Feyenoord last September, but Wilkinson said the former Wales skipper who has 141 caps showed enough in training to merit a place in the squad. "I don't want to get into (what role Ingle will play) specifically because Sophie's pushing, she's looking really good in training. Gattuso replaces Luciano Spalletti, who was sacked this month following a 3-0 defeat by Norway in a World Cup qualifier. He officially departed after overseeing his final match, a 2-0 victory against Moldova. "It's a dream come true, and I certainly hope to be up to the task.
