Parishioners avoid injury after car crashes into Wollongong church

An Anglican Church minister says he is thankful no-one was hurt after an out-of-control car ploughed into his church.
A driver was treated for minor injuries after a car crashed into St Mark's Anglican Church in West Wollongong about 1.30pm Monday, narrowly avoiding parishioners.
Wollongong police said the car had left the Princes Highway before crashing through a church fence.
The car then crashed through the front doors of the building.
The vehicle went through a front area containing a cafe before driving through another door.
It finally stopped after it crashed into another car at the rear of the church.
It is understood there were eight people inside the church at the time.
Senior minister Alex Zunica said he was grateful the accident did not occur at a busier time.
"The place is often quite full of people and children, so we are just so thankful to God it wasn't at another time," Reverend Zunica said.
He said the cafe had closed for the day, with the car missing eight women who were meeting at the cafe.
"We are providing support to all the people who were involved to make sure they are OK and to help them process what happened," he said.
He said there was significant damage to the building and the cafe but the area where the church held its service was not impacted.
"We are currently assessing the state of the cafe to see if we can do some make-safe repairs and secure it," he said.
A female driver, believed to be aged in her 70s, was treated for hand injuries.
Police are investigating the cause of the crash.

Tornado flips ute in WA, golf ball-sized hail damages property

A tornado has flipped a car in southern Western Australia as large hail stones lashed a nearby town. Southern WA was pounded by storms on Tuesday, including a tornado about 300km southeast of Perth. A Frankland River farmer filmed the tornado; the weather system flipped a ute and ripped the cab walls off a tractor. The farmer told the ABC that he had been watching the storm's lightning strikes when the tornado funnel started forming. The tornado was about a kilometre away from him and lasted about two minutes. Numerous trees were ripped out of the ground as well. 'I was like, 'Wow, look at that'. The first thing you do is get your phone out and take some photos and video,' he said. Several storms brought damaging hail stones across the southern half of WA on Tuesday. Golf ball-sized stones fell at the town of Wagin. Video shows the stones pounding down on Wagin's homes and streets. A thunderstorm is forecast to bring up to 40mm of rain across Perth on Wednesday; much of the southern half of the state will be wet too. The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a marine wind warning but no other warnings for WA. There are frost warnings for areas of South Australia. Parts of the of the Mid North, Riverland, Murraylands, Upper South East and Lower South East are waking up to frozen conditions on Wednesday. Parts of northern and northeast Victoria have frosty conditions on Wednesday as well. Out well beyond the east coast, seas up to 5m are forecast around Lord Howe Island from Thursday morning. 'These conditions may produce significant beach erosion, particularly about south-facing coasts,' a bureau warning cautions. 'Beach conditions could be dangerous and people should stay well away from the surf and surf-exposed areas.' This weather system is causing dangerous conditions on the mainland too. People fishing, swimming or boating on the Hunter, Sydney and Illawarra coasts should be particularly cautious on Wednesday.

‘Kind and gentle': Man dead after alleged drunken e-scooter incident

A man beloved by his community has died after a tragic e-bike incident on Saturday evening. Thanh Phan, 51, took a trip into the Perth CBD for dinner, but was struck by an e-scooter at the interception of Murray and King street. The e-scooter rider is a woman who police allege was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the crash. Mr Phan was taken to Royal Perth Hospital for surgery, where he remained in a critical condition before he died on Tuesday. The 51-year-old from Menora had built a loving community in his neighbourhood, with friends of the engineer expressing their condolences. 'On Saturday night, Thanh Phan – a beloved husband, father of two, brother, and dear friend – was struck by an electric scooter and critically injured,' the family said in a statement. 'Yesterday evening, we received the heartbreaking news that Thanh passed away as a result of his injuries. 'We ask that the media respect the privacy of Thanh's family as they grieve their loss. 'We also call for a review of the governance and safety regulations surrounding hired e-scooters to help prevent further serious incidents that put lives at risk. 'The family has no other comment to make on the issue at this time.' Alicia Kemp, 24, is alleged by police to be riding the e-scooter under the influence of alcohol with a 26-year-old passenger, before she hit Mr Phan. The passenger was taken to hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Ms Kemp is set to reappear in the Perth Magistrates Court on Tuesday after being charged with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm – under the influence of alcohol, and dangerous driving causing bodily harm – under the influence of alcohol.
