Shell-hit J&K villagers await relief amid assessment row
SRINAGAR: Two weeks after the ceasefire agreement between India and Pakistan came into effect after three days of intense skirmishes following the May 7 Operation Sindoor, the ruling National Conference (NC) legislators from Uri and Poonch, the areas most affected by cross-border shelling, have claimed that the administration is yet to complete the damage assessment. However, the Chief Minister's advisor has asserted that the assessment has been finished and the government is now awaiting a central relief package.
The Pakistani shelling in the border areas of J&K left at least 18 civilians dead including 13 in Poonch, 3 in Rajouri and one each in Uri and Jammu and over 100 injured. The worst-hit areas include Poonch, Rajouri, and Uri, where hundreds of houses and structures were damaged. MLA Uri Sajjad Shafi told this newspaper that the damage assessment by the district administration is ongoing but has not been completed.
He noted that more than 500 houses in Uri were damaged, with some completely destroyed and others severely or partially damaged. The government has provided compensation ranging from Rs 6,500 to Rs 1.30 lakh, depending on the level of damage. However, Shafi urged the government to increase the relief amount. 'We have requested Rs 10 lakh for fully damaged houses, Rs 5 lakh for severely damaged houses and Rs 3 lakh for partially damaged homes,' he said, adding that these amounts would help the affected families rebuild their homes.

Cash-for-paper case: 4, including Wagholi college professor, held
A professor at an engineering college in Wagholi affiliated to the Savitribai Phule Pune University has been arrested for paying bribes in exchange for answer paper manipulation, along with three others. The professor allegedly took bribes from students to allow them to rewrite their 'Mathematics 2' paper that was conducted on June 2. A press note shared by the crime branch unit six of Pune city said that a whistleblower informed them on June 2 that the professor had taken bribes from students to allow them to enter the college at night and rewrite their answer papers. Based on this information, the unit conducted a raid at the college at 2 am on June 3 and recovered six bundles of written answer sheets, Rs 2,06,000 in cash, and a duplicate key of the room where the papers were kept. A total of eight first-year students had arrived at the college in the night. The said professor and his accomplices had allegedly spied on students struggling to pass the exams and charged Rs 10,000 to Rs 15,000 as bribes from each one of them to allow them to rewrite their paper. A statement shared by the officiating director of the Board of Examinations and Evaluation at Savitribai Phule Pune University, Professor Prabhakar Desai, said: 'The actions of a professor of Moze Engineering College, Wagholi is highly unethical and in violation of the university examination planning regulations. Savitribai Phule Pune University has immediately constituted a fact-finding committee in this regard and has asked this committee to submit its report within just 7 days. As soon as the report is received from this committee, strict action will be taken against the concerned persons by the Examination and Evaluation Board as per the University law. As examinations are very important events in the life of a student, its seriousness and sanctity should be preserved by everyone and the Examination and Evaluation Board of Savitribai Phule Pune University is very sensitive in this regard.'

Her remark comes amid an ongoing language row between the DMK-led Tamil Nadu government and the Centre, particularly over the three-language formula proposed in the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020. Kanimozhi also addressed concerns about terrorism and national security, saying the focus must remain on development and peace. 'There's so much to do in our country, but we are being diverted. We have to deal with issues like terrorism and unnecessary wars,' she said. Reassuring the diaspora about safety in India, especially in Kashmir, she added: 'India is a safe place. They may try whatever they want, but they cannot derail us. We will ensure that Kashmir remains safe.' Spain marks the final stop in the delegation's five-nation tour, after which the team will return to India. Australia likely to tour Pakistan for white-ball series early next year, says CA head
Cricket Australia has agreed to send its team to Pakistan early next year for a white ball series, its CEO, Todd Greenburg, has said. Speaking during an online media interaction, Greenburg said that Australia was keen to visit Pakistan for more tours and discussions were ongoing between the two boards. 'We are trying to schedule a red-ball and white ball series in our program with Pakistan where the window is available. I think the tour early next year will be a success for both boards,' he said. 'Teams in the Big Bash want more quality overseas players in the competition and if some leading Pakistani players are available I am sure they will be sought after.'
