Peoria Humane Society seeks homes for 200+ kittens in need

PEORIA, Ill. (WMBD) — With kitten season in full swing, the Peoria Humane Society is bursting at the seams.
Most stray cats aren't spayed or neutered, leading to a surge in litters every spring. Kitty Yanko, executive director of Peoria Humane Society, said they have more than 200 kittens looking for their furr-ever homes.
'It's no fault of the mom cats when they have a litter that they can't take care of, and they're outside without a home. It's really difficult for the kittens and the cats to have a life like that. But the reality is that the numbers are just increasing,' she said.
If you're interested in adopting a new furry friend or two, all you have to do is fill out an application. They will vet you to make sure its a good fit.
'All the adoptions are spayed or neutered, microchipped and have the first set of shots before they leave the shelter to go into their new home,' she said.
If you can't adopt, Yanko said to consider fostering for a few weeks.
'So if anyone would be interested in opening their home to these little babies here and just providing extra care to kind of get them to the point where they can get adopted and get strong, that would be wonderful,' she said.
And if you can't foster, consider donating supplies like food, litter and toys from their Amazon wishlist to help them keep up with the influx of cats and kittens.
'Cats are great companions. They love to be around people and they're just they offer so much love. And so we're really asking the community to help us this kitten season and open your home to fostering, donate supplies or maybe adopt because you end up with something that will be a friend for life,' said Yanko.

Wanapum fire, near Beverly, burns about 370 acres

Jun. 9—BEVERLY — A wildland fire closed a portion of State Route 243 north of Beverly Burke Road for about four and a half hours Saturday near Wanapum Dam and the Wanapum Village. The fire was reported at about 5 p.m., according to a statement from the Washington Department of Transportation. The road reopened at about 9:30 p.m. The fire was estimated at about 372 acres and was listed as contained as of Monday morning. Eric Linn, Grant County Fire District 10 chief, said land along the highway near Wanapum Dam is owned by a number of different federal and state agencies, which scrambles the fire management picture. While the fire was in GCFD 10's coverage area, the Federal Bureau of Land Management was the lead agency, Linn said. The BLM spokesperson could not be reached by press time. Fire breaks out in parking structure of Nashville library and explosions are heard

NASHVILLE, Tennessee (AP) — A fire broke out in the parking structure of Nashville's main public library early Tuesday and explosions were heard. Eli Gilmore, a Nashville musician who lives in the apartment building next door, said he heard loud explosions begin around 1:15 a.m. local time. 'We were sitting around and I just looked over and saw the black smoke coming out of the garage, and then we just started hearing cars exploding, one after another. We saw a floor crack and fall in. It's been shooting sparks across the street.' On a FaceTime call with The Associated Press, he showed video of the building with smoke pouring out of it and emergency vehicles surrounding it. He said at least 50 firefighters were visible on the scene. The city's fire department could not immediately be reached. ___ AP writer Ted Anthony in Pittsburgh contributed to this report.
