The Langham, Gold Coast Review 2025
A popular surfing destination about an hour's drive from Brisbane, Australia's Gold Coast has long been a go-to holiday destination for city dwellers in Sydney, Melbourne and beyond. These days, a new crop of big-brand hotel openings—including the 2022 debut of The Langham, Gold Coast—has global visitors' interests piqued.
Conveniently perched between Surfers Paradise and Broadbeach, The Langham, Gold Coast touts high-end service with an excellent location. During a winter trip to Australia, I was excited to explore the area for the first time. While I was there, I was able to check into The Langham to experience the property first-hand. Read my full review below.

The Langham, Gold Coast is nestled within the middle of a three-tower beachfront complex called The Jewel, named for its resemblance to quartz crystals (the other two towers are home to serviced apartments). Large and majestic, they dominated the skyline as soon as they came into view on my drive from Brisbane; the property was the area's first beachfront property to be built in decades when it opened in 2022, so a splashy first impression seems fitting. Upon entering, guests are greeted with the property's signature ginger flower scent, as well as a lobby comprised of cream-colored marble design with pops of beachy color.

Given its location, it's not surprising that the property is ocean-focused. The outdoor pool directly faces the sea and features a resort-style swim-up bar, bringing a beach day on-site. And because Aussies are known for their love of wellness, the property is outfitted with a full-scale fitness center complete with steamy sauna rooms and an indoor magnesium pool. Treatments at the on-site Chuan Spa are inspired by centuries-old traditional Chinese medicine, including hot stone massages, white clay facials and mud wraps.

The property is home to 169 rooms in a variety of different categories and every room offers ocean views or views of the surrounding city. I stayed in a junior ocean suite, which had an expansive indoor-outdoor terrace and a small sitting area and table. The bathroom featured a standalone circular bathtub in the middle of the floor, while the room's overall décor was a mix of creams and light pinks (the hotel brand's signature color), alongside a cerulean blue rug that reflected the sea.

I was particularly impressed by the smart integration found throughout the room: Electronic blackout curtains completely seeped the room in darkness at night (the only way I sleep), and the smart room lighting was very simple to adjust from the side of my bed. The Diptyque toiletries were divine and plentiful—a perfect way to refresh after a day on the beach.

The Langham, Gold Coast is home to the signature Cantonese restaurant T'ang Court. The restaurant first debuted in Hong Kong, where it earned three Michelin stars—today, it has seven other locations across Asia, with the Gold Coast outpost being its first in Australia. As a big fan of Cantonese cuisine, I was excited to get a table here, and the meal did not disappoint. From the vegetarian spring rolls with black truffle to the Peking duck and crispy pork belly, every dish I ordered was fantastic.

During my stay, I also enjoyed daily breakfasts at Akoya, featuring a robust buffet of global favorites, healthy dishes and Western classics. I also got to experience a classic Langham afternoon tea at the Palm Court, complete with towers of pastries and sandwiches alongside a glass of afternoon bubbles. The Lobby Bar's wide selection of wines and cocktails is top notch as well. I highly recommend the very fun Grand Jewel, featuring local gin, Champagne, Italian herbal liqueur, and a housemade syrup with local hibiscus, underneath a berry-infused smoke bubble just begging to be popped.

You'll definitely want to make time to enjoy the Gold Coast's famed beaches, with Surfers Paradise and Burleigh Heads being particularly great for surfers. Surfers Paradise is about a five-minute drive from the property, while Burleigh Heads is about twenty minutes. If you plan to head to Burleigh Heads, don't miss lunch at Rick Shore's, a Queensland institution set right on the beach, serving up excellent pan-Asian cuisine. A thirty-minute drive from The Langham, the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary offers face time with koala bears and kangaroos; it was one of the highlights of my stay in the area.

The Langham, Gold Coast is an approximately 35-minute drive from Gold Coast International Airport (OOL). Guests can also arrive via Brisbane International Airport (BNE), which offers a wider variety of international connections, including several direct flights to the U.S. (Los Angeles and San Francisco).

Wyndham's New Ad Blitz: 25 Brands, 1 Message
The world's largest hotel franchisor wants its guests to think "I am a Wyndham person" rather than "I am a Super 8 person who sometimes stays at other random hotels." Wyndham on Wednesday launched a new multi-million dollar ad campaign — its first to promote all 25 of its hotel brands and its loyalty program under one tagline. The "Where There's a Wyndham, There's a Way" campaign marks a shift for the world's largest hotel franchisor, which has typically marketed its brands, like Super 8 and La Quinta, separately. It's also the result of hiring a new ad agency and adapting new marketing techniques to reach customers in an era of AI-based disruption to travel search. The campaign will serve as the foundation of its consumer messaging for years, not just a single campaign, said Marissa Yoss, vice president, brand marketing and paid media. The campaign emphasizes what Wyndham calls "grounded storytelling" over polished travel imagery. One ad shows a young aunt racing to make her niece's graduation and then helping

EasyJet apologises as mum claims family could have died in holiday fire
A mum claims her family could have died when she awoke to find their four-star hotel in flames on their EasyJet holiday - as there was 'no staff help or fire alarm'. Bethany Wallace jetted off to Marmaris in Turkey for a two-week EasyJet holiday alongside her husband and three children on April 1st. But on the third night of their holiday at the luxury resort, Bethany claims she awoke at 5am to the smell of smoke. Horrified, the 36-year-old woke her husband and kids as smoke filled the room before running across the hall to alert her eldest son too. (Image: Kennedy News/@thewallacekitchen) The mum-of-three said she heard no fire alarm and didn't see any staff directing guests as they looked for an exit, with some exits being too full of smoke to use. Bethany, who is a baker and business owner, claims she will never forget her 'scared' kids' faces as the family managed to escape through one of the staircases. After making it out, Bethany said there were no directions to a gathering point and guests were screaming for help from balconies - with some even climbing to other balconies to escape. While waiting outside, Bethany said the smoke, which smelt like burnt plastic, was so bad it started to make the family choke. Footage shows them returning the next day to discover their room blackened from the smoke damage, with most of their belongings ruined. After seeing the hotel's doctor, the family were reportedly given medication for the remainder of the holiday, with Bethany's two children suffering from eye infections and her husband from lung issues from smoke inhalation. EasyJet apologised to the family for how 'distressing' it must have been and said pending the outcome of a formal investigation by the relevant authorities, they will not be offering this property to their holidaymakers. Bethany, from Grays, Essex, said: "I woke up to the smell of smoke and when I opened my eyes the room was full of smoke, it was coming through the grids in the room and under the door. "There was no fire alarm, no noise, it was all really quiet, nothing to alarm anyone. I woke my husband up and said we need to get out now. "I grabbed my six-year-old who was sleeping next to us, we went to my eldest son's room which was next door to ours. "It's difficult to get your bearings when it's so full of smoke. We came across the first staircase we'd normally use and that was just too full of smoke, you couldn't see the bottom of it. "At this point we were banging on doors, there were other people coming out, there was no staff at all, it was chaos. We found a staircase we could go down and got out of the building. "It was really scary. The look on my kids' faces when we were trying to escape the building will never leave my memory. We could have died. (Image: Kennedy News/@thewallacekitchen) "There were no members of staff showing us the gathering place, no procedure at any point [that we saw]. My husband and my eldest son only had shorts on, none of us had any shoes on, there was no one handing out blankets, there was nothing. "It was freezing. We were just left, we waited outside and we could see the situation was getting worse, there were people on the balconies screaming for help. "The smoke had a strange smell, it was a really chemical smell like burning plastic and we were all choking on it. "We took the boys and walked half a mile down the road where we felt the air was clearer and stayed there for another hour. "There were people jumping between balconies because the smoke was so bad in their rooms." The mum said she tried to contact EasyJet to find information about what to do but did not manage to get through to them. After two hours, guests reportedly told Bethany that they were meant to head towards the sister hotel, which was a mile and a half away, while the family had no shoes on. Bethany claims EasyJet reimbursed the medical expenses and offered her £1,000 worth of vouchers, but she declined as the holiday had cost the family around £4,000. Bethany said: "Someone came by and he said we need to go to the sister hotel, the next hotel along the road. "It was like Chinese whispers, the guests were passing the message because no one was telling us anything. "We all started walking to the sister hotel which was a mile and a half further on. That was hell because we were all barefoot, carrying the children, and the roads were awful. "The next day we were told the fire started in the boiling room and that there were no fatalities. We were allowed to go back to the hotel to get our stuff. "We went into the building and the state of it was horrific. We managed to get out passports, but most of the stuff wasn't worth taking. You could tell the flames hadn't reached the room but the smoke had been terrible. "Things like the children's teddies and comfort blankets that they've had since babies are stuff you can't replace. "All five of us were on medication for the remainder of our time there. My husband was told he had [lung issues from smoke inhalation], the two children had an eye infection, I had severe headaches that wouldn't go away and my blood pressure was high. "They originally offered us £1,000 in vouchers which I refused to accept so they came back with £1,600 in vouchers and I also refused. We got nothing. The holiday cost around £4,000 in total." The hotel was contacted for comment. EasyJet said they had conducted an independent assessment and until hearing the outcome of a formal investigation by the relevant authorities, they will not be offering this property to their holidaymakers. An EasyJet spokesperson said: "We're really sorry to hear that Ms Wallace and her family were impacted by the fire at the hotel and we understand how distressing this must have been. "Our team in destination, and our 24/7 On-Holiday Support team were in touch with Ms Wallace at the time to provide alternative hotel accommodation, medical care, and any further help needed. "We're still in contact with Ms Wallace to offer our support, including providing an insurance letter to help with reimbursement of personal items lost and additional expenses, offering trauma support counselling, and a full refund of her holiday cost. "The safety and wellbeing of our customers is our highest priority."

Qantas shutters Jetstar Asia, blaming costs and competition
STORY: Australia's Qantas is shutting down its Singapore-based budget airline, Jetstar Asia. That will mean up to 500 job losses, and see the carrier's fleet of Airbus jets redeployed to Australia and New Zealand. Qantas said Wednesday that rising costs and mounting competition had driven the move. Since the end of the pandemic, budget rivals like AirAsia and Scoot have ramped up services. That has driven competition up, and airfares down. Jetstar Group Chief Executive Stephanie Tully says Singapore's Changi Airport has also become a very expensive place to run an airline. It's been steadily raising charges to pay for investment. Tully says costs there have soared for fuel, airport fees, ground handling and security. She said Jetstar Asia had only been profitable in six of its 20 years, and was on track for another deficit this year. Now the airline will be shuttered at the end of July, with customers offered refunds or rebooking on other carriers where possible. The shutdown does not affect Qantas's other budget units - Jetstar Airways and Jetstar Japan. Shares in Qantas were down around 1.5% in afternoon trade following Wednesday's news.
