China issues orange alert for forest fires
Beijing, Apr 30 (UNI) Chinese authorities on Wednesday issued an orange alert, the second highest-level warning, for forest fires in parts of China from May 1 to 5.
The national forest and grassland fire-control command office and the Ministry of Emergency Management (MEM) issued the alert for forest fires in parts of Hebei, Shanxi, Henan and Shaanxi during the five-day May Day holiday.
The emergency management departments have been instructed to closely monitor changes in fire hazards, implement early warning and response measures, continuously reinforce fire source control, strengthen emergency preparedness, and effectively address the ongoing severe risk of forest fires.
Forest and grassland fires are among eight major natural disasters. "Generally speaking, China's forest fires have shown an overall downward trend in recent years," said Yang Xudong, an official with the MEM, on March 21, the International Day of Forests.
Statistics show that, from 1950 to 1989, China averaged approximately 16,000 forest fire incidents annually. This number dropped to around 6,000 between 1990 and 2020, and since 2021, it has further decreased to less than 1,000 cases per year.
The causes of forest and grassland fires are categorized into natural and human factors, with the latter accounting for over 90 percent of the causes of fire incidents, according to Yang.
China has a four-level warning system for forest fires, with red being the highest followed by orange, yellow and blue.

IMD issues yellow alert as rain and thunderstorms loom over Mumbai
Mumbai, June 7 (UNI) A yellow alert has been issued for Mumbai due to expected rain and thunderstorms, the Meteorological Department said on Saturday. The Regional Meteorological Department attributed the weather to oligocyclonic conditions affecting the region, along with weak southwest monsoon winds. Mumbai witnessed significant rainfall at several locations on Friday, while other parts of Maharashtra remained under cloudy skies. Temperatures held steady without much increase, but the combination of humidity and intermittent rain created a muggy and uncomfortable atmosphere for residents. Meteorologists predict that this pattern will continue through the weekend, with light to moderate rainfall and the possibility of thunderstorms. Since the onset of the monsoon, rainfall has been moderate, with Colaba recording 30 mm and Santa Cruz 47.1 mm over the past six days. Despite temperatures being slightly below average—32.2°C in Colaba and 31.7°C in Santa Cruz—the high humidity contributed to a warm sensation. Notably, Santa Cruz received 14 mm of rain on Friday, while Colaba remained dry. Similar weather is forecast for districts including Jalgaon, Nashik, Pune, and Nagpur, where isolated thunderstorms are also anticipated. This weather pattern extends from Madhya Maharashtra to Coastal Andhra Pradesh, as well as parts of Karnataka and Telangana, where cloudy conditions prevail. On May 31, a day before the annual celebration, the bureau shared a short video on its official social media account with the caption 'A notice that it must not rain on June 1.' The video was styled like a formal announcement, with an official reading from a transcript in the manner of a news anchor. To guarantee a pleasant environment for parents to take their children out to play, we order that it should not rain throughout Shenzhen on June 1. 'In some special situations, it is permitted to rain in small areas and rain for a short period. The temperature should be controlled around 31 degrees. Leigong, the God of Thunder, Dianmu, the Mother of Lightning, and Longwang, the Dragon King, please be aware of this notice and implement it well.' The fictional notice was said to have been issued by the 'weather arrangement department of the Shenzhen branch of heaven's children care office.'
