S'pore's investment in Changi Airport Terminal 5 coming at the right time, says Iata chief
– Singapore is making the investment to construct Changi Airport Terminal 5 (T5) at the right time, as South-east Asia is set to be among the fastest growing aviation markets in the world, said the head of the global trade body for airlines.
'It's a very sensible development,' International Air Transport Association (Iata) director-general Willie Walsh told reporters on June 3, during a roundtable for Asian media at the association's annual meeting in New Delhi.
'It will be important to ensure that the capacity is available ahead of the demand, especially for an airport like Singapore, which prides itself in terms of the standard of service that it provides to airline customers and to airlines themselves,' Mr Walsh said.
'South-east Asia is the part of the world where we'll probably see the strongest growth, going forward,' he added, noting the rapid pace of growth in India and China as well.
Expected to cost billions to build, T5 is designed to handle about 50 million passengers a year when it opens in the mid-2030s. This will allow Changi Airport to handle 140 million passengers yearly, up from 90 million today.
Mr Walsh, an industry veteran who was chief executive of British Airways, said Iata supports the development of the new mega terminal in Singapore, noting that the association has been in close dialogue with the airport operator and the Government about it.
He lamented the fact that many other airports around the world do not fully understand the needs of airlines, which leads to developments that are not appropriate or more expensive than needed.
Responding to a question about taxation in India, he said airlines will always have an issue with airport charges.
'The view of airlines is we want efficient airport operations at a cost-effective price, and that means we want to see airports make sensible long-term investments that can be afforded by the industry,' Mr Walsh said.
'It clearly requires more dialogue between airlines and airports, and where we see airlines and airports working together, it's incredibly effective,' he added.
Asked about Singapore's plans to consolidate the operations of national carrier Singapore Airlines and its budget arm Scoot at T5, and whether there is a need to ensure fairness for other carriers, Mr Walsh said this happens at any other major air hub.
'For a hub airport to be successful, it requires the hub airport infrastructure, but also the hub airline... If you've got the major hub operator, you've got to have facilities that work for them,' he added.
Given the growth that is expected in the wider Asian region, Mr Walsh said there is also sufficient demand to support the emergence of new regional hubs, in addition to the existing ones.
'The critical issue is you have to have the network,' he said, in response to a question about Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport's aspirations to be a hub in East Asia.
'What you often get with these airports is you get a lot of services, but not necessarily connected,' Mr Walsh added.
At an earlier press conference on June 3, Indigo chief executive Pieter Elbers pointed to increased connectivity between India and South-east Asia as a driver of new traffic and opportunities.
He said India is functioning, to some extent, as a growth engine for South-east Asia, and Indigo, a low cost-carrier and India's largest airline, has added a lot of new flights to the region, to 'enormous response' from both markets.
'We see a lot of new traffic developing between India and South-east Asia – to Thailand to Malaysia to Singapore,' said Mr Elbers. 'So the growth in India is not only domestic growth, it is also regional growth.'

The total retail sales value in April was $3.9 billion. PHOTO: ST FILE SINGAPORE - Retail sales in Singapore continued rising in April, continuing the growth in the previous month. On a year-on-year basis, retail sales grew 0.3 per cent, extending the 1.3 per cent growth in March , according to figures released by the Singapore Department of Statistics on June 5. Excluding motor vehicles, seasonally adjusted retail sales rose 0.2 per cent from March. The total retail sales value in April was $3.9 billion. Online sales accounted for 12.6 per cent of this, lower than March's 13.3 per cent. Half of the total sales of computer and telecommunications equipment were made online (49.8 per cent). For furniture and household equipment, online sales proportion was 30 per cent, and for supermarkets and hypermarkets, 13.1 per cent. Within the retail trade sector, more than half of the industries recorded year-on-year growth in sales in April, with computer and telecommunications equipment sales seeing the highest growth (14.8 per cent). The sales of watches and jewellery rose 12.9 per cent due to higher sales of jewellery, while sales of recreational goods rose 4.9 per cent. In contrast, the petrol service stations sector and the wearing apparel and footwear sector recorded year-on-year sales declines of 10.6 per cent and 10.3 per cent, respectively. Food and beverage sales increased 1.2 per cent in April on a year-on-year basis, reversing the 2.7 per cent decline in March . On a seasonally adjusted basis, sales of food and beverage services also increased 1.2 per cent in April compared with the previous month. The total sales value of food and beverage services in April was estimated at $947 million. Of this, an estimated 25.9 per cent was from online sales, higher than the 25 per cent recorded in March. Year-on-year declines were seen for restaurants at 3.7 per cent, but fast-food outlets sales saw a rise of 1.9 per cent, while sales for food caterers went up 19.9 per cent. Overall, retail sales were likely impacted by the challenging recovery in tourist arrivals, which remain below pre-pandemic levels as of April year-to-date, said UOB economist Jester Koh. Furthermore, retail sales continue to be weighed down by the diversion of residents spending abroad, with the Singdollar still exhibiting relative strength among the Asian currencies year-to-date, said Mr Koh. 'We continue to foresee downside risks to Singapore's retail sales over the coming months amid elevated economic uncertainty,' said DBS Bank economist Chua Han Teng. Weaker domestic labour market conditions, which already softened in the first quarter of 2025, have the potential to further dampen household spending and retail sales, said Mr Chua. 'Heightened global trade policy uncertainty and high global trade frictions will negatively impact Singapore's export-reliant economy, especially in the second half of 2025,' he added. 'This will in turn weigh on business hiring and wage increment, leading to belt-tightening by households, and dragging down retail sales.' South Korea's new President Lee begins moves to tackle economic ‘crisis'

PHOTO: REUTERS SEOUL - South Korea's new President Lee Jae-myung held his first cabinet meeting on June 5 focused on devising an emergency package to address stagnating economic growth and aid households, moving swiftly to start tackling a top campaign pledge. Mr Lee took office on June 4 just hours after riding a wave of anger over a brief martial law imposed by Yoon Suk Yeol to win the snap election. The attempt at military rule led to Yoon's ouster and sent shockwaves through Asia's fourth-largest economy. In brief remarks open to the media, Mr Lee told the Cabinet carried over from the caretaker government put in place following Yoon's impeachment in December 2024 that there was no time to waste in getting to work as the people were facing hardship. Mr Lee has so far only nominated a close political ally and legislative veteran as prime minister and is racing to form a Cabinet and staff his office to maintain continuity in administration. The new leader expressed bewilderment on June 4 after walking into the presidential office to find it stripped of computers, printers and even pens and was quiet like 'a graveyard' with government officials who had been assigned there sent back to their posts. Most of the officials have been ordered back, Mr Lee's spokesperson said on June 4. Mr Lee has made economic recovery one of his top priorities and vowed to immediately unleash fiscal spending of at least 30 trillion won (S$28.3 billion) to boost growth, which was projected by the central bank in May to be almost half of its earlier estimate this year at 0.8 per cent, down from 1.5 per cent in February. Mr Kim Min-seok, whose appointment as prime minister requires parliamentary approval, said on June 4 the country was facing even more economic turmoil than during the Asian financial crisis of 1997, complicated by unfavourable external factors. 'Today, the economy is heading downward and stagnating, which is why I believe it's much more difficult,' he told reporters. The previous government had made little progress in trying to assuage crushing US tariffs that would hit some of the country's major export-reliant industries, including autos, electronics and steel. Mr Lee faces what could be the most daunting set of challenges for a South Korean leader in decades, analysts said, ranging from healing a country deeply scarred by the martial law attempt to tackling unpredictable protectionist moves by the United States. On June 4, Mr Lee withdrew the nomination of two judges to the Constitutional Court, made by acting President Han Duck-soo before the election, his office said. Mr Lee previously said Mr Han had no power to nominate judges as an unelected acting leader. The ruling Democratic Party-controlled parliament also passed on June 5 special counsel acts to investigate former president Yoon on insurrection charges and his wife Kim Keon Hee over corruption allegations. The party had previously passed the special counsel acts on multiple occasions, but they were repeatedly vetoed by Yoon and then the acting president.
