Warriors' Champion Reveals What Knicks Must do This Offseason to Become Title Contenders
Warriors' Champion Reveals What Knicks Must do This Offseason to Become Title Contenders originally appeared on Athlon Sports. The New York Knicks were able to reach the Eastern Conference Finals for the first time since 2000 but they fell short of reaching the NBA Finals as they were eliminated by the Indiana Pacers in six games. Advertisement It was a horrible start to the series for the Knicks as they dropped the first two games at Madison Square Garden and they were unable to recover from their early 2-0 series deficit. Of course, fans have placed the blame on Tom Thibodeau, who the Knicks fired on Tuesday, and Karl-Anthony Towns but there were many different reasons why New York fell short of reaching the NBA Finals. Rebilas-Imagn Images A key reason was the fact that they lacked true roster depth and Thibodeau also failed to use his bench as much as some would have liked. Now the Knicks enter the offseason with some key decisions to make regarding their roster and Golden State Warriors champion Draymond Green recently revealed what New York must do this summer to become title contenders. Advertisement '(New York) didn't quite have the depth. They need to add a great player if you think they're gonna compete for an actual NBA championship,' Green said. This is a bold statement by Green but one that makes sense and has also been said a lot since the Knicks' playoff exit. Of course, the Knicks need to upgrade their bench this summer but they could also look to add another star player like Green hinted at, though he did not name who they should go after. Advertisement Despite this, New York first has to find a new head coach and then they will have to decide if they want to run it back with the current lineup that they have or make some moves to acquire another star player. Cleveland Cavaliers assistant Johnnie Bryant is more than just a finalist for the Phoenix Suns head coaching job. He's also now could be an ideal candidate to replace Tom Thibodeau in New York. The third-seeded Knicks fired Thibodeau after losing to the fourth-seeded Indiana Pacers in the Eastern Conference finals in six games. The Knicks, which finished the regular season 51-31, announced the firing on June 3. Advertisement While names like Michael Malone, Taylor Jenkins and Jay Wright have been linked to the Knicks job, Bryant spent three seasons in New York as an assistant under Thibodeau before joining the Cavs for the 2024-25 season. Cleveland Cavaliers associate head coach Johnnie Bryant reacts during a game against the Brooklyn Nets on Dec. 16, 2024, in the Brooklyn borough of New York City. Bryant has a familiarity with several Knicks players, including All-NBA guard Jalen Brunson. Bryant was an assistant under Thibodeau in New York from 2021 to 2024. He and fellow Cavs assistant Jordan Ott are Suns finalists to replace Mike Budenholzer in Phoenix. Ott, 40, and Bryant, 39, have never been NBA head coaches. Malone and Jenkins have. Malone coached the Denver Nuggets to the 2022-23 NBA championship while Jenkins was head coach of the Memphis Grizzlies. Advertisement As for Wright, the Hall of Fame coach won two national championships at Villanova, where he coached Knicks players Josh Hart, Mikal Bridges and Brunson. Wright retired in 2022. The Suns fired Budenholzer after a 36-win season to suffer their first losing season since 2019-20. They also missed the playoffs after last doing so in 2019-20. Kenny Atkinson won the 2024-25 NBA Coach of the Year award with Bryant and Ott as his assistants. Have opinions about the current state of the Suns?
