Court denies bail for technician accused of sodomising stepdaughter in Cheras
KUALA LUMPUR, May 8 — An air conditioning technician pleaded not guilty in the Sessions Court here today to a charge of sodomising his stepdaughter last month.
The 40-year-old man was charged with having unnatural sex with the girl, aged 9 years and 10 months, on the balcony of an apartment in Cheras, near here, at 2 am last April 8.
He is charged under Section 377c of the Penal Code, read together with Section 16 (1) of the Sexual Offences Against Children Act 2017, which provides imprisonment for up to 30 years and whipping if convicted.
Judge Zulqarnain Hassan did not allow him bail and set June 17 for mention.
Earlier, lawyer Charanpal Singh, representing the accused, when requesting his client to be allowed bail, said he is the sole breadwinner of the family and has to send his four other children, aged seven to 14, to school.
The seven-year-old child has a heart problem and needs follow-up treatment at a hospital, he said.
The prosecution was represented by Deputy Public Prosecutor Faizah Khalilah Zaberi. — Bernama

DAP to issue statement on Teoh Beng Hock case, says Loke
PETALING JAYA: DAP secretary-general Anthony Loke said his party will issue a statement on the Teoh Beng Hock case soon. He however did not indicate a specific time for the statement's release. "We will issue a statement," he said at a press conference after the Higher Education Ministry's Ilmuan Malaysia Madani forum titled "Transport for the People: Balancing Affordability, Quality and Sustainability of Public Transport." Yesterday, it was reported that the sister of Teoh Beng Hock demanded transparency and accountability from the authorities after the Attorney-General's Chambers (A-GC) and police decided not to pursue further action in the 2009 case. Beng Hock's sister, Lee Lan expressed her dismay over the decision for no further action (NFA), especially given that multiple court rulings had established the death was not due to suicide or an accident. She said that the Court of Appeal had ruled in 2014 that Beng Hock's death was caused by the actions of individuals, including Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) officers, and demanded that the police investigate the case under the proper criminal provisions. She also called for those currently in the government to act appropriately as they had in the past stood by the fact that he was killed. Last month, the Teoh Beng Hock Association for Democratic Advancement called for DAP's five ministers to resign in protest over the NFA. Association chairperson Ng Yap Hwa said the ministers - Loke, Gobind Singh Deo, Nga Kor Ming, Sim Chee Keong, and Hannah Yeoh - should take responsibility on the party's behalf for failing to fulfil promises to seek justice for Beng Hock. Beng Hock's family had earlier been informed by police that their latest investigation into the case had been classified as requiring no further action or NFA. On Nov 21 last year, the High Court had directed the police to complete their long-delayed investigation into the death more than 15 years ago. Beng Hock died on July 16, 2009 at the fifth floor of Plaza Masalam, Shah Alam, after being questioned for hours by the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC). An inquest was held and the coroner returned an open verdict. However, the Court of Appeal in 2014 ruled that his death was caused by "one or more persons unknown", including MACC officers. In 2019, police launched an investigation under Section 342 of the Penal Code for wrongful confinement. Prior to 2018, two special investigation teams were set up – one in 2011 and the other in 2015 – to look into Teoh's death, but both cases were classified as NFA by the public prosecutor.

81% of vape-related poisonings linked to ‘magic mushroom' flavour
National Poison Centre pharmacist Fadhli Razali warned that the synthetic cannabinoids found in 'magic mushroom' vapes can trigger violent or erratic behaviour. PETALING JAYA : A staggering 81% of vape-related poisoning cases handled by Universiti Sains Malaysia's poison centre involved products branded as 'magic mushroom' vapes, most of which were used by teenagers and young adults. The National Poison Centre (PRN) said it had seen a sharp rise in such cases since 2022, with many users experiencing seizures, hallucinations, vomiting, and behavioural changes after just one or two puffs. 'These are not harmless vapes. Most samples that we tested did not even contain real psilocybin, but synthetic drugs that can cause serious harm or death,' the centre's pharmacist Fadhli Razali said in a statement. He said between 2020 and 2024, the centre recorded 76 calls involving suspected illicit vape exposure. In 2022 alone, 65% of cases involved such vapes (17 cases), followed by 79% in 2023 (27 cases) and 68% so far this year (26 cases). PRN said the problem had increased among young people, with 41% of cases involving teens aged 15 to 19, and 53% involving those in their early 20s. 'These vapes are easily manipulated to include dangerous substances. Without strict control, it becomes an open door to drug abuse,' he said. Fadhli also warned that the synthetic cannabinoids found in these vapes could trigger violent or erratic behaviour, causing harm to users and those around them. He said these products, often sold online and marketed as trendy or exotic, were now considered a public health threat by PRN. 'We urge all state governments to act urgently and uniformly in banning vape sales, and the federal government must begin enforcing its laws immediately,' he said. He said PRN fully supported the current move by state governments to outlaw vape products and called for a nationwide ban to protect youths from a 'hidden but dangerous drug epidemic'.

Man believed high on drugs attacks wife with electric guitar
TAWAU: A man suspected of being under the influence of drugs allegedly assaulted and threatened his wife with an electric guitar and scissors at Kampung Tanah Merah, Merotai Besar here, yesterday. The 44-year-old suspect reportedly became enraged at 7.13pm after his 36-year-old wife confronted him over suspicions of drug use involving syabu. Tawau district police chief Assistant Commissioner Jasmin Hussin said the man struck the victim's right shoulder with an electric guitar and then pointed scissors at her, threatening to stab her multiple times. He added that the suspect also punctured all four tyres of his wife's car to stop her from leaving to lodge a police report. "However, thanks to the swift action by police, the suspect was arrested near their home around 11.35pm following the victim's report," he said in a statement. Jasmin said police also seized the electric guitar and scissors used in the incident. "The suspect is now in custody to assist with investigations under Sections 323 and 506 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt and criminal intimidation," he said.
