SINGAPORE – A new lexicon has emerged to describe the strange, sometimes bleak contours of the modern economy, its terms of engagement and consequences. From 'price walking' to AI girlfriends, here are some everyday dystopian terms to help make sense of today's economy.
1. Ghost jobs
These are job listings created by companies with no intention to fill them – a common frustration experienced by online jobseekers.
'Ghost jobs' are not scams, but rather a manifestation of flaws in the recruitment ecosystem, The Wall Street Journal reported in January. Some companies want to give the impression that they are growing or may keep vacancies open on the off chance that a stellar candidate comes their way.
Such phantom vacancies are not uncommon. According to an analysis of internal data by global hiring platform Greenhouse, between 18 and 22 per cent of jobs advertised in 2024 were vacancies that were never eventually filled.
2. Quiet vacationing
Quiet vacationing refers to the practice of workers working remotely while travelling, without telling their bosses.

Quiet vacationers indulge in this practice because of pandemic-driven shifts towards remote work, concerns about voicing their desire for greater work-life balance and wanting to make the most of limited time off.
'Employees are working longer hours in an increasingly competitive job market, while also feeling the urge to fulfil pent-up travel desires post-pandemic,' says Dr Sriram Iyer, adjunct lecturer at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School. 'This leads to a trend in which individuals combine work and leisure by taking vacations while still attending to work obligations.'
He also notes that the introduction of the Tripartite Guidelines on Flexible Work Arrangement Requests in April marks a growing recognition of the desire for flexible work that is fuelling the quiet vacationing trend.
3. Productivity theatre
These are actions workers take to appear busy without necessarily accomplishing meaningful work.
A 2023 global survey of more than 18,000 desk workers by workplace communication service Slack found that workers surveyed in India, Japan and Singapore reported spending over 30 per cent of their time on performative work, just to keep up appearances.

Respondents also indicated that 43 per cent of meetings could be eliminated without negative consequences. 'This could have been an e-mail' is one common meme refrain to such theatre.
4. Asset limited, income constrained, employed (Alice)
This describes people earning above the poverty line, but who are still struggling to afford the essentials. The term was coined by American advocacy group United for Alice to refer to the growing number of Americans who make too much to qualify for social assistance, but not enough to avoid living pay cheque to pay cheque.
One closely related term is 'precariat', which refers to the growing class of workers with precarious employment such as gig workers, part-timers or contract staff, who lack stable benefits or job security.
As at 2023, it is estimated that 70,500 platform workers operate in Singapore, representing around 3 per cent of the workforce. The Platform Workers Act, passed in 2024, mandates Central Provident Fund contributions for platform workers and provides work injury protection.
Singapore does not have an official poverty line, but the 2023 Minimum Income Standard study led by NUS senior research fellow Ng Kok Hoe shows that a couple with two children aged seven to 18 needs $6,693 a month, while a single elderly person aged 65 and up needs $1,492.
5. Ensh**tification
Coined by American tech critic Cory Doctorow, 'ensh**tification' is used to describe how digital platforms start off as free, user-friendly services, before slowly degrading into advertisement-heavy or paywalled platforms with exploitative designs.
This race to the bottom occurs because platforms initially operate at a loss to attract users, before the company's focus shifts to extracting shareholder value. The quality then starts to deteriorate when users get locked in with few alternatives.
Frequently cited examples include the plight of vacation rental platform Airbnb, online dating apps, search engine Google, ride-hailing apps and social media platforms.
6. Dark patterns
'Dark patterns' are deceptive user interface designs that trick users into making choices they might not otherwise make.
Examples include subscription services that are easy to sign up for but tedious to cancel, pre-checked boxes opting you into marketing e-mails, or hidden additional fees and charges revealed only at the payment stage. Other ploys include creating a false sense of urgency or scarcity by implying that a deal might soon expire.
It was reported in 2024 that the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore has said such 'dark patterns' on e-commerce websites will be an area of focus for the organisation's new policy unit.
7. Price walking
Also known as the 'loyalty penalty', this price discrimination practice – sometimes found in insurance, telco plans and subscription services – sees long-time customers paying progressively more over time unless they cancel or renegotiate their plans.
Some jurisdictions, like the United Kingdom and parts of the United States, have moved to ban this practice for insurers.
In Singapore, where fierce price competition has driven down mobile data plan prices, consumers with older plans may be paying more than new customers for worse deals.
8. Dynamic pricing
Another form of price discrimination. This refers to adjusting prices in real time based on demand and consumer data, most visibly on ride hailing apps' surge pricing or travel booking platforms.
In practice, dynamic pricing means that what you pay may depend less on cost than what the system thinks you can pay.
In 2024, some Singapore netizens criticised children's theme park KidZania for implementing surge pricing on ticket sales. Elsewhere in the world, such pricing has been creeping into ticket sales for concerts and festivals.
9. Shrinkflation
'Shrinkflation' refers to the practice of manufacturers reducing product size, while maintaining or increasing prices.

A closely related but distinct concept is 'skimpflation', in which businesses cut back on the quality or availability of their services while keeping prices steady.
In March, Trade and Industry Minister Gan Kim Yong announced a pilot scheme for supermarkets to display unit prices for some common grocery items, such as rice, meat, cooking oils and vegetables. This would mean being able to see the price 'per litre' or 'per kilogram' for these items, allowing for better comparison.
10. Buy now, pay later
Once reserved for big-ticket items like smartphones or furniture, interest-free instalment plans are now being offered for vacations, fast fashion and even food delivery orders through Grab PayLater and Atome. Grab now allows you to finance your McDonald's delivery order over four interest-free payments.
While convenient for managing cash flow, the buy-now pay-later scheme has drawn controversy for having fewer safeguards than traditional credit and encouraging overspending – particularly among young adults. More than 70 per cent of Gen Z people in Singapore used buy-now pay-later services in 2024, according to a report by payment processing firm Worldpay, which also found that such transactions are 70 per cent larger in sum than average credit card purchases.
In 2022, a code of conduct for providers of buy-now pay-later schemes in Singapore was formalised to guard against consumer overspending.

11. AI companions
While many artificial intelligence (AI) fears revolve around job replacement, AI is fast gaining ground in an unexpected area: social connection.
A 2024 Stanford University study found that 63 per cent of over 1,000 students interviewed reported that AI assistants like ChatGPT helped to reduce their feelings of loneliness or anxiety.
Part of the appeal of AI systems is how they are cheaper than therapy or dates with other humans and are designed to be non-judgmental. Many also believe they are anonymous while speaking to one.
However, this agreeableness of AI is a double-edged sword, creating personal echo chambers as AI sycophantically agrees with whatever is proposed.
A small industry of AI start-ups has launched to capitalise on the desire for human-AI relationships, with even mainstream players like OpenAI now touting the 'friendliness' of their chatbots as a key selling point.
12. Data brokers
Data brokers are firms that collect and sell personal information. While many Singaporeans use digital platforms for 'free', this often involves terms and conditions which allow platforms to sell user data to brokers.
Such data is then used for targeted advertising, background checks and potentially by scammers and telemarketeers. Social media platforms, e-commerce websites, cashback services and even DNA genetic testing services have been criticised for their collection and sale of user data.
The Personal Data Protection Act provides some safeguards, but many Singaporeans remain unaware of how extensively their digital footprints are bought and sold.
As one popular tech sector adage goes: 'If you are not paying for it, you're not the customer. You're the product being sold.'
13. Brain rot
Oxford University Press' word of the year in 2024 describes the perceived cognitive decline from consuming excessive low-quality algorithmic content.
Dr Samer Elhajjar, a senior lecturer of marketing at NUS Business School, says that while humans may once have had more 'boring' time to sit with their thoughts and reflect, this is no longer the case because of the 'doomscrolling culture'.
While the impact of this is not yet fully understood, some initial studies with children point to TikTok use being linked to anxiety and worse sleep and memory. While evidence on whether 'brain rot' truly exists remains mixed, the term reflects growing anxiety with infinitely scrolling social media feeds and the attention economy.
14. Recession indicator
Real recession indicators are things such as inflation, investors flocking to gold, decreased home sales or companies freezing hiring.
For netizens, however, the recession indicator meme is used to reframe all kinds of everyday occurrences as ominous signs of a looming economic crash: the return of flash mobs, American pop singer Lady Gaga releasing a new album or someone not offering to split the bill on a date.
For instance, one might joke: 'This article about cost-of-living hacks is a recession indicator.'
Analysts predict that Singapore is likely to avoid a technical recession, defined as two consecutive quarters of economic contraction.

Tariffs and potential slowdown of global economy weigh on property players' minds: NUS poll
[SINGAPORE] Real estate leaders in Singapore were significantly more pessimistic in the first quarter of 2025, as sentiment soured after the rollout of tariffs in the United States brought about heightened economic uncertainty. According to a quarterly survey by the National University of Singapore, the Composite Sentiment Index – a barometer of general prevailing sentiment – fell to 4.3 in Q1, from 6 in the previous quarter. The turn in sentiment comes after five consecutive quarters of upward movement as the market progressively recovered from the April 2023 property curbs, which saw heftier Additional Buyer's Stamp Duties imposed on housing buyers, the survey noted. 'Amid such a subdued landscape, the 90-day tariff pauses announced by the US – first for other countries in April, then for China in May – is a silver lining that holds the potential for a de-escalation of the trade war between America and China,' said Prof Qian Wenlan, director of the Institute of Real Estate and Urban Studies (Ireus). However, with trade negotiations still ongoing at large, it is still early days to predict how the global economy will eventually pan out, Prof Qian said. 'So firms and households would need to keep a close watch on leverage and debt obligations in the event of a hard landing, while capital might want to seek less volatile assets such as sovereign bonds and real estate.' Sign Up Sign Up Prof Sing Tien Foo, NUS Business School's provost chair professor of real estate, said: 'This sentiment survey coincided with the announcement of tariffs imposed on many trading partners of the United States. The effects on market sentiment cannot be fully eliminated.' A slowdown of the global economy was cited by 87.5 per cent of respondents as the top risk they were concerned about. This was followed by job losses or a decline in the domestic economy, with 70.8 per cent of respondents worried about this, a markedly higher increase from the 29.6 per cent who flagged this as a risk in the fourth quarter last year. Some 37.5 per cent of respondents were concerned about the possible tightening of financing and liquidity in the debt market, while one-third cited rising costs of construction as a potential risk. Only 29.2 per cent of property executives indicated they were concerned about cooling measures being introduced, a sharp dip from 77.8 per cent who felt so last quarter. The Current Sentiment Index – which follows changes in sentiment over the past six months – fell to 4.2, from 6.2 in the quarter before. This was the lowest since Q3 2023, after the Additional Buyer's Stamp Duty rates were hiked in April that year. The Future Sentiment Index – which tracks sentiment changes in the next six months – similarly fell to 4.5 in Q1, from 5.9 in Q4 2024. Half of real estate executives surveyed expect the number of residential units to be launched in the next six months to remain relatively constant, an increase from 13.3 per cent who believed so in Q4. Some 64.3 per cent expect new launch prices in the next six months to remain at the same price level, while 28.6 per cent think prices will be moderately higher. For the first quarter of 2025, all property sectors had negative current net balances, as well as negative future net balances. Current and future net balance percentages are used to indicate current and future sentiment, with a negative net balance pointing to a poorer sentiment. They are based on the difference between the proportion of respondents who selected the positive and negative options in the poll. 'A weaker business environment will exert a spillover effect into the property sector, and with the exception of business parks and high-tech space which stayed flat, sentiment fell across the board,' said Prof Qian. Real estate players remained most favourable towards the suburban residential market in Q1, with a current net balance of -4 per cent, compared to a +67 per cent net balance in Q4. The suburban residential market also has the highest future net balance of -25 per cent, although this has fallen significantly from the +52 per cent in the previous quarter. The prime residential market had a current net balance of -25 per cent and a future net balance of -50 per cent. This is a reversal from Q4, when the current net balance for the prime residential market was +4 per cent. For the first quarter, the current net balance for the suburban retail sector stood at -4 per cent, while the prime retail sector had a current net balance of -17 per cent. The suburban retail sector recorded a future net balance of -29 per cent, while the prime retail sector's future net balance came in at -54 per cent. All other sectors from office, business parks, industrial and logistics, and hotel/serviced apartments had current net balances ranging from -25 per cent to -13 per cent. The future net balance for these sectors ranged from -46 per cent to -29 per cent. 'The outlook for the immediate future remains gloomy, as the latest survey results revealed -46 per cent and -38 per cent future net balances respectively for industrial and logistics and office, suggesting that respondents anticipate downward pressures on commercial space to increase further over the coming months,' Prof Qian said.

First ASEAN-Gulf bloc-China summit ‘ambitious', but competing interests pose partnership challenge
KUALA LUMPUR: The historic summit this week between ASEAN, China and a Gulf bloc marks a "symbolically significant and ambitious" hedge against rising global uncertainty in the face of United States tariffs, analysts said. But they added that the inaugural meeting between leaders of the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN), Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) and the East Asian superpower also laid bare the three sides' competing interests as they seek to find common ground without alienating ties with Washington. While the summit in Kuala Lumpur did not produce immediate breakthroughs, it was still a valuable platform for the three parties to clarify each other's priorities and explore urgent methods of cooperation amid growing global fragmentation, the experts said. 'In this context, both ASEAN and GCC countries are among China's most important trading partners, and their positions will be critical as Beijing strategises its response to evolving US trade pressures,' said Li Yao, a senior research fellow at the National University of Singapore's East Asian Institute. But the challenge is how the sides navigate these diverging priorities and a developmental gap in a trilateral partnership spanning 17 countries, all while keeping their relationships with the US on an even keel, the analysts said. The GCC - comprising Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Qatar, Kuwait, Bahrain and Oman - has close ties with the US. US President Donald Trump got lavish receptions across Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE during his recent Middle East tour earlier in May, before securing hundreds of billions of dollars of investment commitment from the three countries. The ASEAN-GCC-China Summit might have purposefully avoided any overtly anti-US language, but the optics of a trilateral meeting involving Beijing - especially amid tariff tensions - could still raise concerns in Washington, the analysts told CNA. Under the second Trump administration, there is a higher risk that such partnerships could be interpreted as undermining US influence, said Joanne Lin, senior fellow and co-coordinator of the ASEAN Studies Centre at Singapore's ISEAS-Yusof Ishak Institute. "For a first-of-its-kind summit, the ASEAN-GCC-China meeting was symbolically significant and ambitious," Lin told CNA. The summit showed an intent to "deepen South-South cooperation, broaden economic partnerships and present a more autonomous front" amid rising global uncertainty, particularly in the face of US tariffs, but this is not without challenges, she said. "The interests and priorities of ASEAN, the GCC and China are not entirely the same or aligned," Lin said, adding that she heard the ASEAN-GCC-China joint statement eventually issued on Wednesday morning was one of the "most difficult" statements that had to be negotiated this summit season. "ASEAN is more focused on practical cooperation, the GCC is increasingly seeking space to assert its Middle East priorities, while China is leveraging the platform to advance its global ambitions and influence." The ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, is the brainchild of Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and marks the first such summit between ASEAN, one of its dialogue partners, and a third multilateral grouping. At the summit, several leaders in their opening remarks pledged to build a new model of cooperation against a backdrop of an 'increasingly complex' global environment. In the summit's joint statement, the three parties agreed to improve economic cooperation and work more closely together in areas such as connectivity, energy security, digital transformation, food and agriculture, as well as people-to-people exchanges. The statement made sure to highlight the importance of upholding ASEAN's 'centrality in the evolving regional architecture', and the GCC's and China's roles in promoting 'peace' and 'stability'. It did not mention the US or its unilateral levies. Geopolitical trust deficits among the sides remain a "major constraint", Li said, pointing to how the South China Sea disputes, for example, continue to shape perceptions of China's regional intentions, with some ASEAN countries expressing stronger concerns than others. China claims most of the strategic and resource-rich waterways as its own, while several ASEAN members including the Philippines have overlapping claims. "Similarly, historical tensions and regional rivalries in the Middle East may influence how GCC members approach multilateral cooperation involving China and ASEAN," Li said. "Therefore, while the trilateral partnership holds potential, its effectiveness will hinge on managing the diverse interests, strategic calculations, and levels of mutual trust among participating countries." DEVELOPMENT GAPS, COMPETING INTERESTS The varying levels of development among ASEAN member states have long posed internal challenges, particularly in reaching consensus on sensitive issues such as environmental standards, labour rights, and streamlining regulations, Li said. 'These disparities are likely to carry over into the broader ASEAN-GCC-China partnership, complicating efforts to formulate cohesive policies across such a diverse grouping,' she said. Lin said the developmental gaps could shape the pace and scope of cooperation in the trilateral partnership. 'Some ASEAN countries still face basic infrastructure and governance challenges, while others like Singapore and China are pushing into advanced tech and finance. Meanwhile, the GCC states are navigating their own transitions away from oil dependence,' she said. Within the ASEAN-GCC-China partnership, Li said differences in economic structure and varying degrees of reliance on the US market and security architecture would introduce further limitations. 'Some countries are more deeply integrated into the US-led global supply chains or depend on American security guarantees, making them less willing to pursue initiatives that might be perceived as drifting too close to China,' she said. 'As a result, the political space for manoeuvre will differ significantly across the group, affecting the depth and pace of trilateral cooperation.' All parties in the trilateral partnership - including China - would prefer strong economic ties with the US, said Ruby Osman, geopolitics policy advisor at the Tony Blair Institute for Global Change, which helps governments with policy and strategy. 'But the summit still represents an implicit criticism of the US's increasingly unilateral - and transactional - approach to global trade,' she said. The summit could make Washington reassess its approach to bilateral tariff talks based on the evolving dynamics among its traditional partners and strategic competitors, Li said, noting that Trump has demonstrated 'a degree of flexibility and transactional pragmatism' in past negotiations. But Osman said the US is unlikely to be worried about a trilateral joint response to the tariffs, given its varied trade relationships across the Gulf and Southeast Asia, citing how GCC countries were comparatively unscathed while ASEAN nations were initially among the hardest hit. While gulf countries such as the UAE, Qatar and Saudi Arabia were subject to a baseline tariff of 10 per cent, some Southeast Asia nations such as Cambodia and Laos were hit by tariff threats of 49 per cent and 48 per cent respectively, before Trump announced his 90-day pause on Apr 9. However, the US 'might pay more attention to any emerging collaboration (between ASEAN, GCC and China) on AI and digital infrastructure,' said Osman. 'China and the US are increasingly turning their attention to the race not just to develop but to diffuse artificial intelligence solutions globally, and both ASEAN and the GCC will be key markets to build influence,' she added. COOPERATION BEYOND TRADE The ASEAN-GCC-China partnership promises avenues for broader trilateral cooperation beyond traditional trade, Li said. 'China holds notable strengths in digital infrastructure, green technologies and supply chain coordination - areas it can leverage not only to expand economic influence but also to counteract potential 'poison pill' provisions embedded in future US trade agreements with third parties,' she said. 'Through collaboration in these sectors, ASEAN and GCC countries may benefit from access to technology, investment, and diversified trade routes, thereby strengthening their economic autonomy.' Poison pills are clauses that could limit deeper engagement with China, Li said, something Beijing is increasingly concerned about. Lin said the summit could unlock meaningful cooperation across key areas like energy, infrastructure, digital connectivity and the green transition, all of which are priorities for ASEAN, the GCC and China. 'For ASEAN, it's also a strategic opportunity to leverage Gulf countries' and China's implementation capacity to bridge regional development gaps,' she added. 'There were also discussions about the Gulf states potentially joining the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), which, if realised, would significantly broaden ASEAN's trade ecosystem.' The ASEAN-driven RCEP is the world's largest free trade agreement (FTA), comprising about 30 per cent of the world's total gross domestic product and population. It is made up of the 10 ASEAN countries as well as Australia, China, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand. 'VERY AMBITIOUS' FREE TRADE AGREEMENTS During the summit, Singapore Prime Minister Lawrence Wong had broached working towards an ASEAN-GCC-China FTA 'in due course', while also suggesting an "ambitious plan" to develop a partnership between GCC and RCEP. Both ASEAN and China are in separate talks to each sign an FTA with the GCC, while ASEAN already has an FTA with China. ASEAN, the GCC and China together represent a combined gross domestic product of US$24.87 trillion and a population of approximately 2.15 billion, with their leaders keen to stress the vast untapped potential. Lin said the idea of a trilateral FTA is 'bold but not impossible'. 'However, bringing all three together will be a tall order, mainly due to differences in regulatory regimes, trade standards and economic openness,' she said. 'Some GCC economies still maintain high barriers in certain sectors, and ASEAN itself isn't a single market. Political will is there, but the technical and strategic hurdles remain significant.' Lin also described the suggestion of including the GCC in RCEP as 'forward-looking', one that would 'significantly expand' RCEP's reach and underscore its role as a global trading platform. 'But any move in that direction will require detailed feasibility studies,' she added. Adib Zalkapli, a geopolitical analyst specialising in the Indo-Pacific, said such partnerships were 'very ambitious, but given the current climate, it makes a lot of economic sense'. 'Given the challenges and disruptions to global trade caused by (Trump's) Liberation Day tariffs, it makes strategic sense to leverage existing frameworks like RCEP as a defensive mechanism,' the managing director of Viewfinder Global Affairs said. Trilateral FTAs are also 'not entirely unusual', he said, citing the existing ASEAN-Australia-New Zealand FTA and the North American FTA between Canada, Mexico and the US. 'But like any FTA, the negotiations can be time-consuming and labour-intensive,' he said. Adib said the nature of the ASEAN-GCC-China Summit, involving high-level discussions, means it is not expected to produce tangible outcomes overnight. 'The trilateral summit should not be taken as a sign that ASEAN is tilting towards China. The best response from the US is to be more actively engaging with ASEAN,' he added. 'Convening the summit itself is a success in a way. What is more important is to see in the coming years, efforts by the three parties to operationalise the aspirations or objectives of the summit.'
