Chinnaswamy stampede: RCB pledges ₹10 lakh to each victim's family
Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) on Thursday pledged ₹10 lakh each to the families of the 11 people who died during a stampede outside Bengaluru's M Chinnaswamy Stadium during a victory parade celebrating the team's IPL title win.
"The unfortunate incident in Bengaluru yesterday has caused a lot of anguish and pain to the RCB family. As a mark of respect and a gesture of solidarity, RCB has announced a financial support of ₹10 lakh to each of the eleven families of the deceased," the franchise said in a post on X.
RCB also announced the creation of a fund named RCB Cares to support fans injured in the incident.
"Our fans will always remain at the heart of everything that we do. We remain united in grief," the statement said.
Stampede during RCB's IPL 2025 celebration
A massive crowd had gathered outside the stadium on Wednesday to celebrate RCB's historic first-ever IPL title. However, the event turned tragic when a stampede broke out, killing 11 and injuring 33 others.
Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah said the stampede occurred near a small stadium gate overwhelmed by the crowd. "A large number of people gathered there and broke it, which led to the stampede," he said, adding that most victims were young.
Deputy Chief Minister DK Shivakumar said the programme was shortened in response to the crowd surge. "We appeal to the people to remain calm. The programme ended within 10 minutes. We are trying to make everything normal... Lakhs of people came," he said.
Government announces inquiry and financial relief
The Karnataka government also announced ₹10 lakh compensation for each of the victims' families. A magisterial inquiry has been ordered into the incident.
"I don't want to defend the tragedy that has happened. Fifteen days' time is given for magisterial inquiry," said CM Siddaramaiah.
Authorities are continuing to review the circumstances that led to the stampede, including security lapses and crowd management failures.

'Shetty, while laying out a series of allegations against RCB and its partners, told the bench that the franchise did not apply for the mandatory permissions to hold the public celebration,' India Today report added. The state also held the BCCI accountable, arguing that the cricket board had an agreement with RCB to handle key responsibilities such as security, gate and ticket management. Further, the government told the court that no official permissions were granted either for the victory parade or for the celebratory ceremony that followed. Referring to communication received on June 3, just an hour before the IPL final, Shetty argued that it was a mere intimation, not a formal request. He further added that the Karnataka State Cricket Association (KSCA) had only sent an intimation letter, and not a proper application seeking event permission. 'Various entertainment programmes were also planned without approval,' he said. The stampede at the stadium, which hosted a victory celebration after RCB's women's team won the WPL 2024 title, has triggered widespread criticism of the organisers and calls for accountability. His statement came a day after RCB owners, Diageo India — the Indian arm of UK-based Diageo Plc — responded to speculation that part or all of the IPL franchise was up for sale "I am not a mad man. I'm just a member of the Karnataka Cricket Association from my younger days, that's all. I don't have time, though I had offers to be part of the management... Why do I need RCB? I don't even drink Royal Challenge," Shivakumar told news agency ANI. Earlier this week, a Bloomberg report said that the British distiller was in discussion with potential advisers on selling the club. Diageo owns the team through its Indian unit, United Spirits Ltd., and may seek a valuation of as much as $2 billion. Following the rumours, the shares of United Spirits, registered with the Bombay Stock Exchange (BSE), gained a 3.3 per cent increase in its price, this hitting a five-month high on Tuesday morning. This forced the BSE to sent out a mail to Diageo, who then responded saying the reports were merely speculative in nature. Mital Sanghvi, the company secretary, informed the regulating body of the Indian Stock Market on the mail saying, "The company would like to clarify that the aforesaid media reports are speculative in nature and it is not pursuing any such discussion. This is for your information and records."
