Hopes that Jersey and Guernsey rugby sides can combine each year

Yahoo15-05-2025

Organisers hopes Saturday's inaugural Channel Island rugby match can become an annual event.
Jersey and Guernsey rugby clubs have come together and will take on Sweden on Saturday evening at Footes Lane.
It is the first time the two Channel Island clubs have joined forces for a combined team.
The game will be played two weeks after Jersey beat Guernsey in their annual Siam Cup match at St Peter.
"The intention is to run it every year and next year to play away in Jersey as we have the Siam Cup," Guernsey RFC chairman Gary Haycock-West told BBC Radio Guernsey.
"Jersey have been very much a part of this journey, very collaborative.
"The whole idea is it's going to have a good legacy.
"If we can get a great spectacle, hopefully, over the coming next year or maybe a year after we can then introduce the ladies, the seconds, very similar to the Siam Cup."
With Guernsey traditionally playing in green and Jersey in red the sides will play in a white shirt with the Guernsey flag on the front and Jersey flag on the back.
The flags of all five main islands have been included on the shirt, while the side will compete for a trophy whose base is made from Jersey and Guernsey granite.
"This came about by thinking 'we've got a big gap in our finances for this budget year, because of the Siam being away', so myself and a couple of others were kicking around a few ideas," added Haycock-West.
"I went home with great excitement and said to the wife 'we've got this idea, Jersey and Guernsey playing together in a rugby match against someone else;' and she went 'it'll never happen, too much rivalry'.
"I go down the pub on the Friday with a bunch of mates, much the same answer, so I thought is this a non-starter?
"But you put it into the players, and both islands really embraced it because ultimately their end is the Siam Cup and now they're playing internationally against Sweden, so it's a great opportunity."
The team will be co-captained by Guernsey skipper Lewis Hiller and Jersey captain Evan Whitson, with eight starters from the home island and seven starters travelling from Jersey.
"The opportunity to play an international side like Sweden and combine the two clubs has been something that's excited me for a while," said Guernsey director of rugby Jordan Reynolds, who is leading the coaching staff.
"They're ranked 30th in the world, they've just come off the back of the European tournament where they did really well.
"They've got a lot of players playing in National One, so a level above what we're playing at the moment.
"So it's going to be a huge challenge for us, but one that we're excited about, it's not every day that you get to play with your rival club.
"Hopefully we can make some success out of this and it can be something that we can play again in a year's time."
The game being played a few hours after the Muratti Vase final - where Guernsey face Jersey at football in one of the most hotly anticipated derbies of the year.
And while inter-island rivalries on the sports field are nothing new, Haycock-West hopes that this sporting union may well represent a new-found coming together for island sides:
"I'm really hoping that if we can make this work, which I believe we are, maybe some other sports can pick up a similar model and start to up their game.
"Obviously the Channel Islands punch well above their weight in lots of sports like the Commonwealth Games and such like, but hopefully we can move this and work closer together."

Diamondbacks Predicted to Trade Former Cy Young Winner Amid Season-Long Struggles

Based on facts, either observed and verified firsthand by the reporter, or reported and verified from knowledgeable sources. An offseason haul that included Josh Naylor, Corbin Burnes and others had the Arizona Diamondbacks looking like the biggest threat to the Los Angeles Dodgers in the NL West. The early part of the season indicated Arizona would indeed be a thorn in the side of the Dodgers and one of the best teams in the NL. The last two weeks have proved the opposite of that, as the Diamondbacks have fallen to 29-31 and fourth place in the division. Because of that slide, Bleacher Report's Zachary D. Rymer has predicted Arizona will move former Cy Young winner Zac Gallen prior to the trade deadline. PHOENIX, ARIZONA - MAY 17: Starting pitcher Zac Gallen #23 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts after giving up a home run to Hunter Goodman #15 of the Colorado Rockies during the first inning of the... PHOENIX, ARIZONA - MAY 17: Starting pitcher Zac Gallen #23 of the Arizona Diamondbacks reacts after giving up a home run to Hunter Goodman #15 of the Colorado Rockies during the first inning of the MLB game at Chase Field on May 17, 2025 in Phoenix, Arizona. More"Things have taken a turn for the weird for Gallen since his sustained run as a Cy Young-caliber ace between 2020 and 2023," Rymer writes. "The 32 walks are especially out of character, and the decline in his fastball velocity to just 93.2 mph is also a concern. Yet the knuckle-curve and the changeup still play as bat-missing pitches, and the worst you'll get with him is a guy who can give you six innings regularly. Like with Alcantara, the best you'll get is a No. 1." Along with the 32 walks, Gallen's 5.13 ERA is also another area of concern. He has just four starts this season in which he's allowed less than two earned runs, with Tuesday's outing being the most recent one. He has allowed at least four earned runs in seven of his 13 starts this season, matching the number of times he did that all of last season. Another thing that could factor into Gallen being a potential trade candidate would be his contract situation. He is set to be a free agent after this season, making him an even more attractive half-season rental for a playoff hopeful team. Gallen's ability to improve his season stats, combined with Arizona's failure to improve on its record and playoff chances, could make him one of the most coveted trade targets if the Diamondbacks decide to make him available. Boom! Ohio State basketball gets commitment from European shooting guard

Boom! Ohio State basketball gets commitment from European shooting guard Boom! For a second day in a row, Ohio State basketball received another commitment for the upcoming year. This time, the Buckeyes went to Europe and snagged shooting guard Mathieu Grujicic from Germany. Just 17 years old, Grujicic played professionally for Barca 2, where he averaged nearly 13 points per game while adding 4.9 rebounds and two assists per game. He shot a healthy 34 percent from beyond the arc, giving the Buckeyes a much-needed shooting threat from deep. Of course, it will remain to be seen how much impact the youngster can have in year one, but having the professional experience under his belt may give him a bit of an advantage. Grujicic is the second European player to join Ohio State under head coach Jake Diebler's watch. He joins Croatian center Ivan Njegovan, who will be entering his sophomore year in Scarlet and Gray. Diebler is trying to build the type of roster he needs to run his system. Grujicic fits the bill, coming from a fast-paced system that looks to spread the floor. Fans are hoping to see a much-improved product in year two under Diebler's command.

Arsenal confirm talks to sign loanee forward permanently

Arsenal have confirmed talks are ongoing to keep Chloe Kelly at the club beyond the end of her loan from Manchester City, with her current deal there set to expire on 30 June. The winger, who returned to north London in January, has spoken openly about how the move reignited her passion for the game. Photo byChloe Kelly's second stint at Arsenal may yet become permanent, with the club confirming they are in discussions to sign the winger following the expiry of her loan deal from Manchester City. Advertisement The 27-year-old's contract with City also runs out at the end of June, paving the way for a free transfer should an agreement be reached. Kelly's return to north London in January transformed both her season and, by her own admission, her state of mind. After struggling at City, the forward said her loan move 'helped me rediscover happiness' and spoke emotionally of how Renee Slegers and the Arsenal environment reignited her love for football. 'As soon as I stepped foot in this club, I found happiness,' she told reporters after starting the Champions League final in Lisbon, where Arsenal defeated Barcelona 1-0. 'Renee Slegers, as soon as she got on the phone to me, to give me the opportunity to represent this badge, I wanted to repay her. From being in such a dark place to now, it's crazy.' Photo byArsenal's newly released retention list states confirms that 'discussions are ongoing' with Kelly. Advertisement While Arsenal are keen to keep her, Kelly herself has stopped short of committing publicly. 'Look, if it's my last game for the club, I'll forever be grateful,' she said. 'I know I've given my all to Arsenal Football Club and Arsenal Football Club has given their all to me. They gave me an opportunity to step foot on the pitch and find happiness. It's not about football at times. No matter what happened today, the club gave me happiness. 'No, I was ready to take a break from football completely,' she admitted. 'I'm just grateful.' Her comments underscore the broader culture cultivated so quickly at Arsenal under Slegers, and how far the club has come in rebuilding its identity since Jonas Eidevall departed. Advertisement Kelly's goal in her first game back – a 5-0 rout of Tottenham Hotspur at the Emirates – set the tone for a run-in that culminated in European glory. Yet it was the bond with teammates and supporters that made the difference. Photo by'I love them, they're flipping amazing,' she said of the fans. 'Whether at the Emirates, whether here in Lisbon, Villa Park when things weren't going to plan. They know exactly what we want and they're on that journey with us. They're the best fans that I've ever played in front of.' Kelly also reflected on the personal journey that brought her back, recalling the early years in the Arsenal academy, where she trained with Lotte Wubben-Moy, Leah Williamson, and others who have since become the spine of the team. Advertisement 'I was speaking to Lotte on the pitch after the game,' Kelly said. 'Me and Lotte used to get the underground to Finsbury Park, Finsbury Park to Potters Bar. Potters Bar, we used to get off and get a bus and get off at the M25 bridge and walk to the training ground. Looking back, it's been a journey. To do it with these girls is so good. Players that I've played with growing up, Leah, when I joined Arsenal when I was 12, it's amazing.' With Kelly now approaching the peak years of her career, any permanent deal would be a massive boost for Arsenal. Whether Kelly stays or goes, her impact this season has already proved profound. But Arsenal believe the story is not yet finished – and they are doing all they can to make sure it continues.
