Oil edges up as geopolitical concerns and weaker dollar support

LONDON: Oil edged up on Tuesday, in the face of rising geopolitical tensions as the war in Ukraine ramped up despite peace talks in Turkey and Iran was set to reject a U.S. nuclear deal proposal that would be key to easing sanctions on the major oil producer.
Crude had gained nearly 3% on Monday after the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries and allies, known as OPEC+, kept its July output hike at 411,000 barrels per day, the same as earlier months and less than some in the market had feared.
Brent crude futures gained 45 cents, or 0.7%, to $65.08 a barrel by 1154 GMT. U.S. West Texas Intermediate crude was up 31 cents, or 0.5%, to $62.83.
'Risk premia have filtered back into the oil price following deep Ukraine strikes on Russia over the weekend,' said analyst Harry Tchilinguirian of Onyx Capital Group.
'But more importantly for the barrel count, there is the to and fro between the U.S. and Iran regarding uranium enrichment.'
Oil leaps 4% after OPEC+ keeps output increase unchanged
Ukraine and Russia at the weekend ramped up the war with one of the biggest drone battles of their conflict, a Russian highway bridge blown up over a passenger train and an attack on nuclear-capable bombers deep in Siberia.
Iran, meanwhile, was poised to reject a U.S. proposal to end a decades-old nuclear dispute, an Iranian diplomat said on Monday, saying it fails to address Tehran's interests or soften Washington's stance on uranium enrichment.
If the nuclear talks fail, it could mean continued sanctions on Iran, which would limit Iranian supply and be supportive of oil prices.
Further support came from the weak dollar. The dollar index held near six-week lows as investors weighed the outlook for U.S. President Donald Trump's tariff policy and its potential to hurt growth and stoke inflation.
A weaker U.S. currency makes dollar-priced commodities such as oil less expensive for holders of other currencies.
'Crude oil prices continue to rise, supported by the weakening dollar,' said Priyanka Sachdeva, senior market analyst at Phillip Nova.
Adding to supply worries, wildfires burning in Canada's province of Alberta have affected more than 344,000 barrels per day of oil sands production, or about 7% of the country's overall crude output, according to Reuters calculations.
Further price support could come if forecasts of a drop in U.S. crude inventories are realised in the latest round of weekly supply reports.

Euro zone bond yields muted ahead of ECB policy rate decision

Euro zone bond yields were little changed on Thursday as markets eyed an expected interest rate cut from the European Central Bank later in the day. With the ECB widely expected to cut rates by 25 bps to 2%, investors will focus on any indication of what comes after. The market still anticipates at least one more cut by the end of the year, bringing the deposit facility rate to 1.75%, but it is factoring in only a 30% chance so far for a cut at the central bank's next meeting in July. 'A downwardly revised inflation projection and a balance of risks around the growth outlook, perhaps more clearly pointing to the downside, would generally paint a dovish backdrop, but given the uncertain environment around trade specifically, one should not expect any concrete hints from President Lagarde,' analysts at ING wrote in a note to clients. Germany's 10-year yield, the benchmark for the euro area, was mostly flat at 2.52%. It fell to its lowest since May 8 on Tuesday at 2.485%. Germany's policy-sensitive two-year yield was also unchanged at 1.79%, within its recent tight range. The ECB has cut rates seven times in 13 months, as inflation eased from post-pandemic highs, as it sought to support a euro zone economy that was struggling even before US President Donald Trump's erratic economic and trade policy came into the picture. Euro zone bond yields hold steady, down from six-week high Markets have been rattled since Trump announced a slate of tariffs on trading partners around the globe on April 2, only to pause some and declare new ones, pushing investors to look for alternatives to US assets. Italy's 10-year yield, the benchmark for the euro area periphery, slid 2 bps at 3.482%, leaving the gap between Italian and German yields at 93.6 basis points.

Russian drone attack kills five, injures 24, Ukraine officials say

KHARKIV: A Russian drone attack killed the family of the local fire chief in Ukraine's northern town of Pryluky in Chernihiv region, Ukraine's interior minister said on Thursday. Minister Ihor Klymenko said the attack killed the fire chief's wife, daughter and one-year-old grandson. 'On this terrible night, the rescuer was on site with the fire and rescue team to deal with the aftermath of the enemy strikes,' he wrote on Telegram, expressing his condolences. The family was among five people killed when Russia launched six drones to attack the town overnight, regional governor Viacheslav Chaus said. Six more people were hospitalised, he added. Ukraine's northern and eastern regions have been a frequent target of Russian drones and missiles in the more than three-year-old war. Another Russian drone attack on Ukraine's northeastern city of Kharkiv injured 18 people, including four children, Klymenko said. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov said the overnight strikes damaged seven apartment buildings, with direct hits on two. Ukraine strikes grounded Russian bombers in major drone assault 'It flew into our neighbours' apartment next door, and my child and I managed to run out into the hallway,' resident Anastasiia Meleshchenko told Reuters at the scene, adding that the ceiling began to crumble after a blast. 'Yesterday, workers had just finished repair work in my apartment after the previous attack,' she said. Outside, wrecked cars were on the street and emergency services workers were inspecting the damage. There was no immediate comment from Russia.

Iron ore dips as focus shifts to softening China steel demand

BEIJING: Iron ore futures dipped on Thursday, as the focus shifted back to softening steel consumption in top consumer China's off-peak demand season. The most-traded September iron ore contract on China's Dalian Commodity Exchange (DCE) closed daytime trade 0.14% lower at 701 yuan ($97.60) a metric ton. The benchmark July iron ore on the Singapore Exchange lost 0.8% to $94.7 a ton, as of 0701 GMT. Given the lack of core driving forces, prices of the key steelmaking ingredient are expected to fluctuate amid seasonally weak demand, analysts at Galaxy Futures said in a note. 'There is no big change to fundamentals in the iron ore market. The wave of upward momentum led by the price rally of coal faded, so ore prices also softened,' said Zhuo Guiqiu, an analyst at broker Jinrui Futures. However, downside potential is capped by a relatively high hot metal output, despite production cuts and declining portside inventories, Zhuo added. Hot metal output is typically used to gauge iron ore demand. Despite a trade truce between China and the United States, steel exports have recently shown signs of slumping, dragging demand, Galaxy's analysts added. Weak steel consumption is also a downside risk for feedstocks. Iron ore rebounds on short-covering Other steelmaking ingredients, coking coal and coke , recorded further gains albeit at a slower pace, rising 1.68% and 0.56%, respectively, following Wednesday's more than 6% rally. Steel benchmarks on the Shanghai Futures Exchange were range-bound. Rebar nudged up 0.14%, hot-rolled coil lost 0.19%, wire rod added 0.06% and stainless steel advanced 0.2%.
