Sonny Gray improves to 6-1 as Cardinals shut out Rangers
May 31 - Willson Contreras drove in a run and scored one to back the solid pitching of Sonny Gray and two relievers as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Texas Rangers 2-0 on Saturday afternoon in the second contest of a three-game interleague series in Arlington, Texas. The Cardinals managed just five hits, but that total was enough to beat Texas, which posted four hits but had only one runner reach third base. St. Louis evened the series after getting shellacked 11-1 on Friday. The Rangers were shut out for the eighth time this season one day after producing their second-highest run total of 2025. Gray (6-1) went seven scoreless innings for St. Louis, scattering four hits and walking one while tying a season high with 10 strikeouts. Phil Maton relieved and worked around a walk in the eighth before Ryan Helsley retired the heart of the Rangers' order in the ninth and struck out two to record his 13th save of the campaign. Gray has won his past three decisions in a stretch of five starts without a loss. Masyn Wynn had two hits -- one of them a double -- to lead the Cardinals' offense. Patrick Corbin (3-4) started and went 5 1/3 innings for the Rangers, giving up two runs on three hits and two walks while striking out three. Corbin has surrendered three runs or less in all 10 of his starts this season but has just one win in his past seven appearances. The Cardinals manufactured the game's first run in the second inning, with Contreras walking, going to second on a wild pitch by Corbin, moving to third on a groundout, and trotting home on a sacrifice fly to deep center field from Nolan Arenado. In the fourth, Contreras doubled home Winn to make it 2-0 after Winn opened the frame with a double into the left field corner. Texas threatened in the fifth as Jake Burger singled and Marcus Semien singled, the latter with two outs. But Gray worked out of the jam by coaxing Kyle Higashioka to fly out. The Rangers had baserunners in the seventh and eighth innings but could not score. --Field Level Media

Lindelof to Barcelona? Victor Lindelof is eyeing a return to Benfica when his Manchester United contract expires this summer. The Swedish defender spent five years on the books of the Portuguese club before earning a £31 million move to Old Trafford in summer 2017. Lindelof is endured an injury ravaged season and has yet to start a Premier League game for the Red Devils. And his campaign took a turn for the worse on Sunday when he missed his penalty as holders United crashed out of the FA Cup to Fulham in a shoot-out. West Ham were one of the clubs who showed an interest in taking him on loan in January – but he looks likely to move as a free agent in the summer. United have not held discussions with Lindelof - who has spent 79 days out injured this season - over an extension to his current deal.

Achraf Hakimi, Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Senny Mayulu were also on target as PSG inflicted the biggest-ever European Cup final defeat on helpless Inter. At the final whistle, Enrique celebrated by hugging wife Elena, son Pacho, 26, and daughter Sira, 25. The result marked the Spanish boss' second Champions League win after leading Barcelona to glory 10 years ago. But Enrique also used the moment to pay tribute to youngest daughter Xana, who tragically died in 2019 at the age of nine from bone cancer. Following 2015's UCL win, Xana famously waved a Barcelona flag as proud dad Enrique watched on. A decade later, the gaffer remembered his daughter as he switched into a black t-shirt bearing her name. The top also showed a picture of two cartoon characters, one little and one large, each clutching a flag bearing PSG's club crest. Meanwhile in the stands, French fans also paid tribute with a tifo showing Enrique planting a PSG flag into the ground with Xana watching on while wearing their club shirt. Another declared: 'He's made sure Xana is with him in victory again.' One noted: 'Xana is with you today.' Another added: 'I'm glad he won for her.' Speaking before the final, Enrique revealed that Xana would be with him on the sideline in spirit. Enrique said: 'I remember an incredible photo I have with my daughter, after winning the Champions League, placing a Barca flag on the pitch. 'I wish I could do the same with PSG. She won't be there physically, but she'll be there spiritually and that's very important to me.' After the final whistle, Enrique added: 'Xana is not physically here, but she is always connected to me and she is enjoying this time with us.'
