
OxBykes customer data leak treated with 'utmost urgency'
A bicycle rental company that accidentally made customer data available on its mobile app has said it is treating the matter "with the utmost urgency". A user of OxBykes, which operates its own fleet of bicycles for rental and sale in Oxford, Cambridge and London, said they had accidently been granted administrative level access to its database on 13 May.Screenshots shown to the BBC by the customer - who asked to remain anonymous - display confidential data including names, contact details and order history.OxBykes said the security flaw had been resolved and that potentially affected customers would be contacted.
OxBykes has 25 depots across Oxford, 14 in Cambridge and three in London. It makes bicycles available for collection instantly after purchase.The user said they had come across the glitch while trying to contact the support team after struggling to find a bike they had rented.They said the data was found via a button on the mobile app and "was accessible throughout the past week".The customer added that they received a personal WhatsApp message from OxBykes founder Louis Wright on Sunday, explaining the error and requesting that they did not release any confidential information.OxBykes CEO Tom Widgery replied to BBC's request for comment on Wednesday. He said the company was "made aware today that a very limited selection of customer data from a small number of customers may have been accessed as a result of a previously resolved vulnerability"."We are treating this matter with the utmost urgency and are currently speaking to our lawyers to understand the full implications of the situation," he said."We have already taken steps to patch the security flaw and are working to understand the extent of any data exposure. "We are also reporting the incident to the Information Commissioner's Office and are preparing to contact any potentially affected customers directly."

Heathrow says record demand shows ‘honest conversation' is needed on expansion
Heathrow airport has called for 'an honest conversation' about expansion after another record month for passenger numbers. More than 7.2 million passengers travelled through its four terminals last month. This was up 0.4% from a year ago and represents its busiest May on record. A Heathrow spokesperson said: 'As these record numbers become the norm, it's time to start an honest conversation about the challenges this presents for an already space-constrained yet highly efficient hub. 'Heathrow continues to deliver excellent service, but to sustain this performance and meet future demand, expanding capacity will be essential.' The airport has previously said it will submit detailed plans for building a third runway to the Government in the summer. Chancellor Rachel Reeves used a speech on growth in January to give her support to the project, which has been repeatedly delayed over several decades because of environmental concerns.

Rail challenger to take on Labour's nationalised trains
Private train operator Lumo is plotting a range of new services across Britain in a direct challenge to Labour's nationalised rail network. FirstGroup, which owns the low-cost rail company, is looking to expand operations after already announcing plans to triple Lumo's passenger count to 10m a year with the addition of five new routes. Graham Sutherland, the chief executive, said FirstGroup is now studying population growth and housebuilding plans to determine where is best to introduce new routes. However, he said the company is particularly keen to restore direct services to London from small towns across the UK, while it is also exploring the possibility of launching trains between poorly connected regional centres. He said: 'Obviously it gets harder the further you get through it, but we feel there are other opportunities still to come out over time. 'Anything we are looking at is commercially sensitive. But the basic criteria is do we think there are under-served areas in terms of rail and do we have an opportunity to drive modal shift and get people out of their cars.'
