Americans linked to Congo coup attempt plead not guilty to US criminal charges

SALT LAKE CITY (AP) — Four Americans have pleaded not guilty to criminal charges in federal court in Utah after authorities said they conspired to stage a violent coup in Congo that failed.
Three of the defendants were charged earlier this month following their return to the United States from Congo, where the death sentences they faced were commuted prior to their repatriation. Among them is 22-year-old Marcel Malanga, son of opposition figure Christian Malanga, who led the coup attempt that targeted the presidential palace in Kinshasa.
A fourth man in Utah alleged by prosecutors to be an expert in explosives is charged with aiding the plot.
Marcel Malanga, Tyler Thompson Jr., and Benjamin Zalman-Polun were ordered to remain in custody after pleading not guilty during a joint court appearance on Thursday.
The alleged explosives expert, Joseph Peter Moesser, 67, appeared separately and was also ordered to remain in custody after entering a not guilty plea. Prosecutors say he provided explosives training and instructions at his Utah home and contributed weapons.
The May 2024 coup attempt aimed to overthrow Congolese President Félix Tshisekedi. At least six people, including Christian Malanga, died when armed men in camouflage fatigues led an attack on the homes of the president and a deputy prime minister.
The four Americans are charged with crimes including conspiracy to use weapons of mass destruction, conspiracy to bomb government facilities and conspiracy to kill or kidnap persons in a foreign country. They face lengthy prison sentences if convicted.
The three Americans who traveled to Congo were among 37 people sentenced to death last September by a military court in Congo for their role in the coup attempt.

Convicted terrorist who conspired to kill Americans has a new job at an NYC mosque

A convicted Al-Qaeda sympathizer who conspired to kill Americans in shopping malls and traveled to the Mideast to train with the terror group is now teaching kids at a muslim community center on Staten Island. For the past five months, Tarek Mehanna — who prosecutors say once vowed to wage armed jihad against Americans both here and abroad — has been teaching Arabic and the Quran to children as young as 4 at the Muslim Community Center of Staten Island in West Brighton. Mohamed Bahi, a former senior advisor to Mayor Adams and the Muslim Community Center of Staten Island's founder, announced Mehanna's hiring in a since-deleted Facebook post, promoting the MCC's Jan. 11 grand opening. Advertisement Adams has visited the MCC in Brooklyn in the past. 8 Tarek Mehanna, right, was released from federal prison in August. Mohammad Elshinawy/ Instagram Mehanna, 43, teaches four days a week, four hours per day. Advertisement 'I'm all for second chances — but not when it comes to convicted terrorists teaching kids. That's not rehabilitation — that's insanity,' said City Councilman Frank Morano (R-Staten Island). The Sept. 11 attacks inspired the terror teacher and galvanized his radicalization, according to federal prosecutors. Mehanna and his unnamed co-conspirators were undeterred when denied entry into Afghanistan at the Pakistan border in 2002, and 'agreed to explore ways in which they, too, could kill Americans.' When the U.S. invaded Iraq in 2003, Mehanna discussed purchasing automatic guns with his co-conspirators to murder US citizens inside shopping malls, 'but [they] ultimately dismissed them as impractical,' according to prosecutors. Their focus then shifted towards killing American soldiers, whom Mehanna called 'infidels,' according to court records. Advertisement 8 The Post visited the Muslim Community Center of Long Island, and was told Mehanna was not a member. Leonardo Munoz 'They discussed many options,' reads the government's 2012 sentencing memoradum, which asked a judge to send Mehanna away for life. Ultimately, they decided in 2004 to 'seek training in Yemen, sought guidance on how to obtain it, received contacts, equipped and readied themselves for the journey, and made arrangements to sneak out of Massachusetts.' After days criss-crossing Yemen's hostile landscape, 'braving brigands and once facing down an AK-47,' the group failed to 'find a suitable training camp' and 'Mehanna returned to the United States disappointed but no less determined to provide support to America's enemies.' 8 Mohamed Bahi, right, a former advisor to Mayor Eric Adams, left, founded the MCC of Staten Island. Mohamed Bahe Advertisement The one-time pharmacist worked in an upscale Boston suburb. He attended an Al-Qaeda training camp in Pakistan later in 2004, where he received 'paramilitary training so that he could eventually join Al-Qaeda in Iraq in fighting and killing American soldiers,' prosecutors said. Mehanna spent the last 14 years at the federal pen in Florence, CO, after being convicted in 2011 of providing material support to terrorists, conspiracy to commit murder, and making false statements to the FBI. Mehanna lied about his Yemeni trip when questioned by federal agents, and later translated jihadist propaganda and distributed it online, along with Al-Qaeda recruitment videos, officials said. 8 Mehanna showed beheading videos to pals on 'movie nights' he regularly hosted. AP Prosecutors further stated Mehanna, whose best friend was Islamist extremist Daniel Joseph Maldonado, 'enjoyed viewing' and immersing himself in footage of the beheadings of Pennsylvania contractor Nick Berg, New Jersey contractor Paul Johnson, and Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl. He showed the horrific videos during 'movie nights' he hosted, according to prosecutors, who said Mehanna idolized Iraqi terror leader Abu Musab al-Zarqawi, who killed Berg. 'He prolifically distributed a video of the mutilation of American soldiers in Iraq, described how one could see the internal organs and ribs, and then said, 'Texas BBQ is the way to go,'' prosecutors said. 8 Mehanna had worked at a Boston-area pharmacy prior to his arrest. REUTERS Advertisement 'This is the role model that kids should be looking up to?' seethed former Brooklyn Assemblyman Dov Hikind. 'This is a role model? Someone desperate to become a terrorist? It's a model of terrorism. 'We know what he stands for and what he's about — what is he teaching these children?' asked Hikind, the founder of Americans Against Antisemitism. While in federal custody, a treatise attributed to Mehanna was posted to a Facebook page calling for his release. In the post, he likened the entire Muslim world to the human body, and compared America to AIDS. 'Jihad is its immune system,' Mehanna wrote. Advertisement 8 On Facebook, Mehanna ridiculed a US soldier's death in one comment. Obtained by the New York Post Following his release in late August, Mehanna mocked the deaths of Israeli soldiers on Facebook, writing 'Poor baby' above videos he shared in both October and November. He also ridiculed Sgt. Quandarius Davon Stanley, 23, who was killed May 23, 2024, while delivering aid to Gaza on President Biden's failed floating pier. 'Another poor baby,' Mehanna wrote on Facebook. Advertisement 8 The MCC has been promoting Mehanna's involvement. MCC Staten Island/ Facebook In December, Mehanna translated a speech by Abdullah Azzam, one of Osama bin Laden's mentors, and shared the lecture — about Marwan Hadid, a leading member of the Muslim Brotherhood in Syria — in a now-deleted Facebook post. The MCC of Staten Island, affiliated with the Muslim Community Center in Brooklyn, has only been open since mid-January, and only just filed its not-for-profit incorporation documents with the Department of State's Division of Corporations on June 5. Advertisement The MCC did not immediately respond to a request for comment. 'It's clear he still harbors the same anti-American hatred he held before his sentence,' blasted City Councilwoman Inna Vernikov (R-Brooklyn). 'The 'education' these children are receiving is being administered on American soil and should reflect the values and interests of our nation.' 8 Mehanna, right, is seen embracing author and teacher Mohammad Elshinawy. Mohammad Elshinawy/ Instagram Vernikov wants him removed from any position where he'll have 'any opportunity to mold young minds.' Asked Vernikov: 'Do any of us really believe that someone who was convicted for colluding with Al Qaeda — a terrorist organization that's committed terrorist acts on American soil and shed American blood — is truly 'reformed' and won't continue to collude with other terrorists, and won't indoctrinate the children in his care into a radical jihadist ideology?'

Australian man shot and killed at a villa on the tourist island of Bali

DENPASAR, Indonesia (AP) — Authorities were searching Saturday for two Australian gunmen suspected of fatally shooting an Australian tourist and injuring another at a villa on the Indonesian resort island of Bali. The shooting just after midnight on Friday at Villa Casa Santisya near Munggu Beach in the district of Badung killed Zivan Radmanovic, 32, from Melbourne. The second victim, who is 34 and also from Melbourne was beaten, said Badung Police chief Arif Batubara. 'We cannot yet determine the motive,' Batubara said, adding that an investigation is underway. The two Australians were rushed to hospitals in Denpasar, the provincial capital. According to police, the villa had only three rooms occupied with a total of five guests when the shooting happened. The two victims' wives were also there and another foreign tourist, Batubara said. Radmanovic was shot in a bathroom, where police found 17 bullet casings and two intact bullets. At least three witnesses at the villa told investigators that two gunmen, one wearing orange jacket with a dark helmet and another wearing a dark green jacket, a black mask and a dark helmet, arrived on a scooter at the villa around midnight. Radmanovic's wife, Gourdeas Jazmyn, 30, told police that she suddenly woke up when she heard her husband screaming. She cowered under a blanket when she heard multiple gunshots. She later found her husband's body and the injured Australian, whose wife has also testified to seeing the attackers. The Australian Consulate in Bali has been contacted by authorities and an autopsy for further investigation is still waiting permission from the family of the victim, Batubara said. Error! The Unrest In California Proves Trump's Always Wanted To War

Source: The Washington Post / Getty 'If it's a lie then we fight on that lie…but we gotta fight,' —Slim Charles, The Wire. It's all been a lie. The frightening story of immigrants killing and raping Americans. The fear-mongering that immigrants are taking American jobs. The horror stories of an open border and hordes of people coming across in the middle of the night. All of it has been a lie. And yet, none of it has stopped this administration from waging a full-out war on Latinos and people of color. Currently, the military-obsessed president has turned peaceful protests into a standoff between those who don't believe people should be arrested at graduation ceremonies and court hearings against the American soldiers. As it stands, some 2,000 National Guardsmen and 700 Marines have been sent to California to quell mostly non-violent demonstrations against Trump's authoritarian push to 'Make America white again.' And all of it is based on lies. Lies that began under Trump's first presidency, when he claimed that illegal immigration was so bad that he wanted to build a wall and Mexico was going to pay for it. Despite that entire campaign falling flat on its face, the alarmism and fear tactics of the scary illegal stealing your job, woman, and Toyota Camry persisted. So much so that once Trump got back in office, he began a war on immigrants using his henchmen at ICE to round up people of color, whether they'd actually committed a crime or not, and have them incarcerated and deported. And all of this was built on lies. But here's the truth: Illegal immigrants make up only 3.5% of the total U.S. population, which is around 11 million people. Clearly that number is impossible to know exactly, '…the estimate essentially comes from taking the foreign-born population from census records, then subtracting the number of legal immigrants.' Around 8.1 million of these undocumented immigrants are working or looking for work, and despite using fake social security cards to secure employment, those workers who are not paid in cash pay taxes on the money they earn. 'In 2010, they contributed an estimated $10.6 billion in state and local taxes, and $13 billion in Social Security,' The Week reports. 'Contrary to common perception, illegal immigrants don't qualify for public benefits like welfare, food stamps, and Medicaid, as these programs require proof of legal immigration status.' This means that they pay into a system and receive nothing in return. Two-thirds of undocumented immigrants have been in the U.S. for 10 or more years, and some 60% of that population lives in six states: California, Texas, Florida, New York, New Jersey, and Illinois. And because Trump has waged war on immigration, the federal government spends more money trying to round up and deport those taxpayers than they do on the FBI, the Drug Enforcement Agency and the U.S. Marshals Service combined. Source: David McNew / Getty All of this is based on the myth that immigrants, especially undocumented immigrants, commit crimes at an alarming rate. However, studies have found that while immigration has increased over the years, crime rates have decreased. 'The American Immigration Council compared crime data to demographic data from 1980 to 2022, the most recent data available. The data showed that as the immigrant share of the population grew, the crime rate declined,' a study done by the American Immigration Council found. 'In 1980, immigrants made up 6.2% of the U.S. population, and the total crime rate was 5,900 crimes per 100,000 people. By 2022, the share of immigrants had more than doubled, to 13.9%, while the total crime rate had dropped by 60.4%, to 2,335 crimes per 100,000 people. Specifically, the violent crime rate fell by 34.5% and the property crime rate fell by 63.3%,' it reads. But this is personal, it always has been. Trump and his administration has labeled Venezuelans 'rapists,' 'savages,' 'monsters' and 'the worst of the worst.' This fear-mongering led to the arrest of some 238 Venezuelans who were sent to a maximum-security prison in El Salvador. An investigation by the Texas Tribune and ProPublica found that not only had many of those deported not been convicted or even accused of crimes, but the Trump administration knew this and deported them anyway. Source: Kevin Carter / Getty Because this was never about the truth. This was always about a little man with freakishly small hands and a giant ego who was never taken seriously, in business or in politics. This has always been about the joke of a president wanting desperately to be seen as a man. It's why he's been hellbent on releasing the military. He was going to deploy a militaristic show of force because that's what bullies do. Whether it was his nonsensical, wildly-expensive showcase of army vehicles during his birthday, or the deployment of troops on peaceful protesters, the president is so far from being an emperor that someone might want to tell him. This was never about immigration; this has always been about a cartoonish heel needing an opponent, and unfortunately for America, the boy impersonating a president has set his sights on anybody in the immigrant community. And even though it's all based on lies, he's still going to ride on that.
