Boca Juniors draw with Auckland City, exit Club World Cup
June 24 (Reuters) - Boca Juniors were held to a 1-1 draw by Auckland City and failed to reach the knockout stage of the Club World Cup on Tuesday in steamy Nashville, Tennessee, where the match was suspended for nearly 50 minutes due to stormy weather.
Boca came into the game needing both a convincing win against already-eliminated Auckland City to overturn a seven-goal difference with Benfica and for the Portuguese club to lose to German champions Bayern Munich in the other Group C fixture.
Auckland City had just drawn level shortly after the break when lightning in the area forced players off the field. By the time play resumed, Benfica had secured a 1-0 win to qualify top of Group C and reach the last 16 along with Bayern.
Boca went ahead in the first half courtesy of an own goal by Auckland City goalkeeper Nathan Garrow while Christian Gray drew his side level in the 52nd minute with a header that sailed inside the right post.

June 25 - Nine-time All-Star point guard Kyrie Irving will decline his $43 million player option and instead plans to sign a three-year, $119 million contract to remain with the Dallas Mavericks, ESPN reported on Tuesday night. Irving, who will have a player option for the 2027-28 season, per the report, is recovering from a torn ACL which ended his season in March. He spoke with ESPN on Tuesday night and said that there is a long-term commitment from himself and the Dallas organization and he wants to build a legacy with the Mavericks, believing the franchise can win a league championship. Irving, 33, could return from the left knee injury as soon as January, per the report. He averaged 22.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, 5.1 assists, 1.0 steals and 40.0 minutes in starting all 22 playoff games as the Mavs advanced to 2024 NBA Finals, where they lost to Boston Celtics in five games. For his career, Irving is averaging 23.7 points, 4.1 rebounds, 5.6 assists, 1.3 steals and 34.5 minutes in 779 games (all starts) for the Cleveland Cavaliers (2011-17), Celtics (2017-19), Brooklyn Nets (2019-23) and Mavericks. Sirens select Colgate F Kristyna Kaltounkova No. 1 in PWHL draft
June 25 - After spending their No. 1 overall pick in the PWHL draft on Colgate forward Kristyna Kaltounkova, the New York Sirens traded up to acquire the No. 3 pick and selected Wisconsin center Casey O'Brien on Tuesday. With the Sirens' roster depleted by the expansion draft, general manager Pascal Daoust worked out a deal with the Toronto Sceptres to bolster the offense with standout scorers. In the swap, Daoust sent top defenseman Ella Shelton to Toronto for its first- and fourth-round picks (No. 27). The Sirens lost two of their top three scorers, Alex Carpenter and Jessie Eldridge, along with starting goaltender Corinne Schroeder to Seattle in the expansion draft and signing process earlier in June. New York scored a league-low 71 goals, with Carpenter and Eldridge combining for 20. Liam Delap nets first Chelsea goal to set up Benfica clash
Liam Delap hopes there are plenty more goals to come after scoring his first for Chelsea to help them into the last 16 of the Club World Cup. The former Ipswich striker was on target as the Blues beat Esperance Tunis 3-0 in Philadelphia to secure the runners-up spot in Group D. The Blues will now face Benfica – surprise winners of Group C, ahead of Bayern Munich – in the next round in Charlotte on Saturday. Delap's goal came moments after defender Tosin Adarabioyo had opened the scoring in first-half stoppage time and put Chelsea into a commanding position. The 22-year-old took a pass from Enzo Fernandez, turned past one defender and flicked outside another before calmly rolling the ball into the net, although goalkeeper Bechir Ben Said made minimal effort to stop the shot. It represented Chelsea's first return on their £30million investment in Delap, who reportedly snubbed Manchester United to move to Stamford Bridge. Delap told the club's website, 'Obviously it is a really happy feeling and hopefully it is the first of many. 'I spoke to Enzo (Maresca) and he told me when he gets the ball to just run.
