Chief of Integrated Defence Staff Lt Gen Mathew retires after four decades of service
New Delhi, Lt Gen J P Mathew, the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff , on Wednesday superannuated upon culmination of nearly four decades in service.
On the day of his superannuation, he laid a wreath at the National War Memorial here and paid homage to the fallen heroes, officials said.
He was also accorded a ceremonial tri-Service Guard of Honour at the South Block lawns.
"Lt Gen JP Mathew, Chief of Integrated Defence Staff #CISC, superannuated today after a glorious military career spanning over four decades, including a highly impactful two-year tenure at the helm of #HQ_IDS," the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff said in a post on X.
The defence ministry said the general officer had been holding the appointment of CISC since April 2023, "promoting jointness and synergy" among the three services.
"Lt Gen J P Mathew relinquished the appointment of the Chief of Integrated Defence Staff on April 30, 2025 upon the culmination of nearly four decades in service," the ministry said in a statement.
Lt Gen Mathew has made "significant contributions" in the expansion of Defence Cyber Agency and Defence Space Agency towards achieving "credible capability" in these critical domains, the ministry said.
"He also encouraged deeper collaboration with the Indian defence industry and academia, reflecting the government's 'Aatmanirbhar Bharat' vision. From steering major reforms and reviewing the curriculum in the Defence Service Staff College of Defence Management, Military Institute of Technology and National Defence Academy to encouraging participation of women, he was instrumental in enhancing diversity and inclusion in the armed forces," it said.
In order to maintain defence cooperation with neighbouring countries and promote regional stability and security, Lt Gen Mathew represented the Indian armed forces in various fora.
Besides, he was instrumental in enhancing the armed forces' humanitarian assistance and disaster relief capabilities, the statement said.
Commissioned into the Punjab Regiment in December 1985, the general officer became the Colonel of the Regiment on January 9, 2022. For his illustrious services, he was conferred with Param Vishisht Seva Medal, Uttam Yudh Seva Medal, Ati Vishisht Seva Medal and Vishisht Seva Medal, it said.

During a community event with the Indian diaspora in Berlin, Prasad highlighted India's remarkable progress in IT, space, and digital transformation under Prime Minister Narendra Modi's leadership, contrasting it with Pakistan's repeated failures in wars while referring to the repeated incidents of Pakistan-sponsored terrorism and the military's dominant role in the country's politics. "India and Pakistan were born the same day. Where are we in India, and where are they (Pakistan)? India has become a major global IT power in the world. Vijay Mallya Opens Up About Returning To India: "If I Get Assurance Of..."
Fugitive businessman Vijay Mallya has stated that he would consider returning to the country if he is assured of a fair trial in connection with accusations of defaulting on loans worth several crores from Indian banks. In a rare and candid four-hour conversation with podcaster Raj Shamani, Mr Mallya, who is wanted in India for alleged loan defaults, addressed the allegations against him, the downfall of Kingfisher Airlines, and his potential return to India. He said he would "seriously consider" returning to India if he is assured of a fair trial and a dignified existence in his home country. "If I have a fair assurance of a fair trial and dignified existence in India, I will think about it (returning to India) seriously..." Mr Mallya told the podcaster. On being called "fugitive" and "fraud" because he chose not to come back to India, Mr Mallya said it was "fair". However, he questioned why he is being called a "chor" (thief) and where is the "chori" (theft). "Call me a fugitive for not going to India post-March (2016). I didn't run away, I flew out of India on a prescheduled visit. Fair enough, I did not return for reasons that I consider are valid, so if you want to call me a fugitive, go ahead, but where is the 'chor' coming from... where is the 'chori'?" he said. Elsewhere in the podcast, Mr Mallya opened up about Kingfisher Airlines' downfall. He said he approached then Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee with a plan to downsize the airline to save it. However, his request was met with opposition. He attributed much of the airline's troubles to the 2008 global financial crisis. The economic downturn had a significant impact on India, affecting nearly every sector of the economy, he said. "The money stopped. It got dry. The value of the Indian rupee also took a hit," Mr Mallya told the podcast host. Mr Mallya said that, recognising the worsening economic climate, he reached out to Pranab Mukherjee to seek permission to shrink Kingfisher's operations. "I went to Shri Pranab said I have a problem. Kingfisher Airlines needs to downsize, cut the number of aircraft, and lay off employees, as I can't afford to operate under these depressed economic circumstances," Mr Mallya said. However, he added that his appeal was rejected. "I was told not to downsize. You continue, banks will support you. That is how it all started." Mr Mallya added that despite these assurances, Kingfisher Airlines was ultimately compelled to halt all flights amid mounting financial troubles. Notably, Mr Mallya left Indian for the UK in March 2016. He has since resided in London, where he fought a prolonged legal battle against extradition to India.
