M'sia wants to continue telecom union membership
Malaysia intends to continue its membership as a council member of the International Telecommunication Union (ITU) for the 2027-2030 session, said Communications Minister Fahmi Fadzil.
He said that as such, Malaysia hopes to gain support from several countries in the Asia-Pacific region through bilateral meetings held in conjunction with the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity Ministerial Meeting (APT-MM) currently underway in Tokyo.

Activists retract claims against Penang exco in defamation dispute

(X pic) GEORGE TOWN : Penang executive councillor Zairil Khir Johari has withdrawn his defamation suit against activists Ravinder Singh and Khoo Salma Nasution after all parties reached a settlement. The dispute concerned a video shared by the activists that linked Zairil's family to the appointment of the project delivery partner for the Penang South Reclamation (PSR) project. Under the settlement, recorded before sessions court judge Sharmila Abdul Samad via e-review, Zairil, the state infrastructure committee chairman, agreed to drop the suit without costs and waived the right to refile it. In return, Ravinder and Khoo removed the video from their social media platforms and agreed not to repost it. The settlement included a joint statement from the activists, who expressed regret for any embarrassment or harm caused to Zairil or his family. They acknowledged that the allegations in the video were unfounded. 'All parties believe that resolving the matter is in the best interest of everyone involved,' the statement read. The video was part of a protest campaign against the PSR, a land reclamation project off the southern coast of Penang island, now known as Penang South Islands. Zairil was represented by Zharif Nizamuddin. Ravinder was represented by Shamsher Singh Thind and Khoo by Theiva Lingam.

No decision on state polls alliance yet, says GRS

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : Gabungan Rakyat Sabah (GRS) has not made a decision on its alliances for the upcoming state election yet, says coalition chairman Hajiji Noor. While Sabah Umno chief Bung Moktar Radin had said that a pact with GRS for the polls was off the table, Hajiji played it down as 'merely Sabah Umno's stand', Bernama reported. 'We in GRS have not made any decisions yet. We will discuss and decide our election strategy, including which parties will be our partners, during the upcoming Supreme Council meeting,' he said. Hajiji, the Sabah chief minister, added that the GRS Supreme Council will most likely only meet after Aidiladha, which falls on Saturday. 'We will discuss not only who our partners will be but also the distribution of seats, candidate selection to ensure winnability, campaign strategies, and efforts to strengthen party machinery across all constituencies.' On Tuesday, Bung said Sabah Umno will not work with GRS in the upcoming state election, but will only consider joining forces after the outcome of the state polls. While Barisan Nasional and Pakatan Harapan have already announced an alliance for the Sabah polls, talks are said to be ongoing to rope GRS into the pact. GRS and PH are currently allies in the Hajiji-led state government while BN sits in the opposition in the Sabah legislative assembly. Anwar Ibrahim, the PH chairman and prime minister, had expressed confidence that PH, BN and GRS would be able to agree on an alliance for the state election.

Daim's widow to challenge Ilham Tower seizure in court

(Website pic) PETALING JAYA : The widow of the late former finance minister Daim Zainuddin will challenge the seizure of Ilham Tower in court. In a statement, Rajesh Nagarajan and Sachpreetraj Singh Sohanpal, who are acting on behalf of Naimah Khalid, said the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission's (MACC) repeated seizure of the Kuala Lumpur city centre landmark was 'pure harassment'. 'This is vindictive, unlawful and a blatant abuse of power by MACC. This is contrary to the rule of law; it is the law of the jungle,' they said. This is the anti-graft agency's second time seizing the tower on Jalan Binjai after making a similar move on Dec 21, 2023. In a strongly worded statement, the lawyers pointed out that MACC had already seized Ilham Tower previously, raising doubts over the justification for taking the same action again. Questioning whether MACC was 'playing musical chairs with the law', they stressed that no corruption charges have been brought against Daim despite repeated allegations and insinuations by both Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim and MACC chief commissioner Azam Baki. 'Having failed to produce any charges, they are now targeting our client with yet another seizure,' they said. 'They want to keep seizing our client's property even though there's no evidence of corruption. 'We will, on behalf of our client, challenge the seizure of Ilham Tower in court immediately.' Azam previously said the commission was considering seizing over RM2 billion in undeclared assets linked to Daim, his family and proxies. Eight new investigation papers were opened after receiving fresh information from foreign agencies. On Tuesday, MACC said it had obtained a court order to freeze £132 million (RM758.2 million) worth of assets in London belonging to Naimah and her family. The assets include two commercial buildings, five luxury residences and one bank account, Utusan Malaysia reported. According to MACC, investigations revealed that the assets were linked to suspected offences under Section 4(1) of the Anti-Money Laundering, Anti-Terrorism Financing and Proceeds of Unlawful Activities Act 2001. In January last year, Daim claimed trial to a charge of failing to comply with the terms of an asset declaration notice issued by MACC. He was accused of not disclosing his ownership of 38 companies, 19 land plots in five states, six properties, two unit trust accounts and seven luxury cars. MACC said he had asked for five deadline extensions but still failed to comply. Naimah also faces an asset declaration charge. She is accused of failing to declare her ownership in various companies, several plots of land here and in Penang, and two vehicles. After Daim's death on Nov 13 last year, the prosecution withdrew the charges and the court granted an order discharging and acquitting him.
