What to watch for in tonight's NASCAR Cup race at Nashville
LEBANON, Tenn. — The second half of the NASCAR Cup regular season begins with tonight's race at Nashville Superspeedway and there's much at stake for several drivers in the field.
Here are a few things to keep an eye on in tonight's race (7:19 p.m. ET green flag on Prime):
Taking advantage of the pole …
Chase Briscoe gets another chance to take advantage of winning the pole.
While he finished third in last weekend's Coca-Cola 600 after starting on the pole, he led only one lap, did not score points in the first two stages and ended with only two points in the third stage. Briscoe was undone by a pit road penalty for an uncontrolled tire on his first stop.
That shows how a problem even early in a 600-mile race can have an impact throughout the event. Tonight's race at Nashville is 399 miles.
'It's frustrating,' Briscoe told NBC Sports about last weekend's performance. 'It really just comes down to kind of how our season's been all year. We just haven't been able to put, at first a full day together, especially a full weekend. Last weekend, we talked about it all week, if we qualify well, we should be able to really maximize our stage points.'
Instead, he didn't score as many as a pole-sitter would be expected to do so. Briscoe ranks last among drivers in a playoff spot in stage points scored this year with 18. Eight drivers outside a playoff spot have scored more stage points than Briscoe this season.

Bubba's bounce back?
Bubba Wallace is succinct in describing his last few races: 'The last three weeks, four weeks, if you want to count All-Star, just (expletive).'
Wallace has finished 33rd or worse in the last three points races, dropping him from seventh to 12th in the season standings.
Last year, 14 of the 16 playoff drivers won in the regular season but this season the victories have been concentrated among a small group of drivers, which could mean more playoff spots will be determined by points. With Wallace falling in the standings, he could be getting close to that area.
For all that, Wallace is keeping a better attitude. He admits in years past that he would focus too much on what has happened in the last few weeks and not what his team has done all season to still allow him to be 38 points above the cutline entering Nashville.
'You're going to have bad races,' Wallace said. 'I've seen so many guys have bad races, like Denny (Hamlin), right, have so many bad races. His stats the last three aren't that great either. Bad luck struck at Charlotte. They show up the next week like 'What happened last week?' They don't care.
'And so I've started to kind of look at that and as much as it sucks, as much as it weighs you down, you have to show up for your team and for your sponsors and enjoy it.'
It also helps that Wallace will start 12th and have a chance to score points in the first stage.
But another bad finish could drop him closer to the cutline.
Deep in the pack
Kyle Larson has an average finish of 4.5 at Nashville and is the only driver to place in the top 10 in all four Cup races at Nashville.
He has work to do if he is to extend that streak. Larson qualified 28th — his worst starting spot since Phoenix in March 2019.
How quickly can he get to the front? Will he score points in the first stage?

Locked in …
The top 32 drivers in points after tonight's race will be locked into the in-season tournament, which will begin later this month in Atlanta.
Brad Keselowski enters tonight's race 32nd in points. Admittedly, Keselowski has other things to worry about — last week's fifth-place finish in the Coca-Cola 600 was his first top 10 of the year — but should Keselowski have another poor finish, the could be in jeopardy of not being a part of the tournament. The winner gets $1 million.
Keselowski starts a season-best sixth tonight.

Texeira selected to MLB All-Star Futures Game staff
After logging time in the major leagues as a pitcher, Maui native Kanekoa Texeira is once again climbing the professional baseball ladder, this time from the dugout. Texeira, a Kamehameha Schools graduate from Kula, Maui, is in his second season as the Triple-A manager for the Gwinnett Stripers, the Atlanta Braves' top affiliate in the International League. That reputation has earned him a new honor, a spot on the coaching staff for the 2025 All-Star Futures Game, set for July 12 at Truist Park in Atlanta. 'Hey, you know, it's fun,' Texeira said. 'It's always been part of my dream to stick in this game as long as I can. Reach out to lots of kids or players that I can share in the knowledge I've learned. I still get shocked sometimes, managing a Triple-A team, one step away from the big leagues. If it happens, it happens. If not, I'm still proud of what I've done and what I'm doing right now.' Texeira's selection to the Futures Game staff came via a text from Braves legend Chipper Jones. 'Chipper texted me and said, 'Hey, you want to coach third base?'' Texeira recalled. 'I said, 'Of course.' Then he said, 'Good, because you're going to be with me in the Futures Game.' I told him, 'I'd be stupid to say no to Chipper Jones, man. I got you.'' Growing up in Hawai'i, Texeira remembers watching the Braves daily on TBS, the only major league team regularly televised in the Islands at that time. '100%, 100%,' he said. 'We only could watch the Braves. Just Chipper, you know… I even got to face him when I played, toward the end of his career. That was big for me. Now you got Tim Hudson and a bunch of studs on the Futures Game staff. It's going to be fun, man.' Texeira is in his seventh year as a professional coach. Just last week, the Stripers celebrated 'Tex Day,' donning Aloha Friday jerseys in his honor, a tribute to his Hawaiian roots, nearly 5,000 miles away from the islands. Mets continue to stake claim as one of baseball's best with another win over Dodgers
LOS ANGELES — Nine months ago, the New York Mets were watching the Los Angeles Dodgers celebrate on the same field they played Monday. And after being beaten by LA in the 2024 NL Championship Series, Mets manager Carlos Mendoza acknowledged that his club still had a ways to go to get to the next level. Dodger Stadium serves as a reminder of not only where the Mets were, but where they want to go. Advertisement 'It was kind of like a sour taste,' Mendoza said before the game. 'But also understanding that after everything that we went through as a team to get to the NLCS when nobody thought about this team. And we ended up facing the team that ended up winning the World Series. 'Different feeling this year. Understanding that they're really good again, but we're also good.' It's been a little over a year since All-Star shortstop Francisco Lindor called the team meeting that salvaged New York's season. The Mets would go on to have baseball's best record from that point in late May en route to the NLCS. One truth about baseball is how much things change dramatically from season to season. New players coming in and old players going out make duplicating the same chemistry challenging and oftentimes impossible. But the Mets have been able to do it. Advertisement Over the last calendar year, no team in MLB has a better record than the Mets, who are 103-61 since June 2, 2024. That's six wins better than the Dodgers, who have the second-best record in that span. In their first game back at Dodger Stadium since the NLCS, the Mets came out swinging. And who else would it be but their leader Lindor? The All-Star shortstop started the game with a leadoff homer, giving the Mets a 1-0 lead. But even after relinquishing their lead late, and coming a matter of feet from being walked off by Shohei Ohtani, who already homered in the game, New York found its resolve. They'd go on to score two runs in the 10th inning to retake the lead, eventually winning 4-3. Advertisement 'It feels good because you start the game 1-0, but at the end of the day, we understand that we have to play 27 outs,' Lindor said after the Mets' victory. 'That's a really good team on the other side, tough team. They're gonna play 27 outs, as well.' This season, the Mets have shown that the identity they created last season was not only real, but also sustainable. This season, they have the second-best record in baseball (38-22) and are now 10-5 over their last 15 games. 'They're grinding. It's a group that continues to fight," Mendoza said. "We went through a lot of adversity [last year]. Every team is going to go through adversity. … This group has been tested before. Advertisement And I just feel like not only do we have really good players, but they push each other, they prepare, and they're not afraid to hold each other accountable.' New York has now won three of their first four games against LA to take the upper hand on the season series. The Mets have started to get hot as they begin the month of June with a tough stretch, including two more in LA against the Dodgers, three games against the Philadelphia Phillies and six against the Atlanta Braves. There is no revenge won in June, but the Mets' win over the Dodgers and their success against them so far this season serves as a reminder of what they can be if they sustain this identity and level of play. And that's not only one of the best teams in baseball, but one that can go toe-to-toe with the best in the West.

49ers had under-the-radar reason for making one of their draft picks
The San Francisco 49ers saw some turnover in their linebacker room this offseason with Dre Greenlaw signing with the Denver Broncos, former Tennessee Titan Luke Gifford joining Robert Saleh's defense and De'Vondre Campbell being left unsigned on the market. With all of that change, San Francisco didn't exactly feel comfortable with their depth at the position behind four-time All-Pro Fred Warner entering the 2025 NFL draft, so they used one of their third-round picks (No. 75 overall) on Oklahoma State linebacker Nick Martin. Advertisement Martin, 22, was a three-star recruit at Pleasant Grove High School in Texarkana, Texas before committing to Oklahoma State in his senior year. He went on to spend four seasons with the Cowboys, recording 203 tackles (24 for a loss), seven sacks, two passes defensed, two forced fumbles and two fumbles recovered in 35 games. He also earned first-team All-Big 12 honors in 2023. While his play on the field was impressive at times, it wasn't just his athletic ability that led the 49ers to take a chance on Martin. According to The Athletic's Matt Barrows, who recently spoke with 49ers director of player personnel Tariq Ahmed, Martin's mental game played just as big of a factor. "Ahmad said the 49ers wanted someone with the communication skills to call defensive plays should Fred Warner ever have to come out of a game. Martin did that at Oklahoma State," Barrows wrote. "And they were looking for a defender who could lead a group of rookie defenders the team might have to lean on heavily this season. Martin was a two-time team captain in college." Warner has been incredibly durable throughout his career, playing in all but one of the 115 possible games over his seven seasons in the league. However, the NFL's a tough business, and staying on the field only gets more difficult the longer you play. Advertisement With Greenlaw out, Ahmad and the rest of the 49ers front office and coaching staff are hoping that Martin is able to take on that hole left by his absence. 'Body structure-wise, they're a little different,' Ahmad said. 'But the aggressiveness, physicality, play speed, the passion? There's a lot of ways to compare those two guys. Everyone's different, but we're hoping.' San Francisco bringing back Saleh and using their first five picks on the defensive side of the ball is a great sign for a unit that allowed the fourth-most points in the game last season (25.6 per contest). These changes should help improve that side of the ball and should help the 49ers back into contention for a postseason spot in 2025.
