SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — The inaugural Big Tide Career Fund was held at J.W. Marriott Plant Riverside.
WSAV's Tina-Tyus Shaw served as host, with Big Tide presenting scholarships to three students.
They represent the next generation of leaders from Savannah High, Liberty County High and Bradwell Institute.
'I'm so honored for this to be the inaugural years of our career fund and to be giving awards to the incredible talents of students who are going directly to college,' said Robert Gould, Big Tide founder. 'And then also we have students who are going directly into trade. We are there to be the bridge for them for the essential items that they need to be successful.'
The recipients were Riniya Roberts, Ivan Tovar Torres and Oquahajie Williams.
'It shows that with hard work and dedication things can pay off,' said Williams. 'You know as a student athlete, we work hard not only in the classroom, but as a student athlete we work hard. Not only in the classroom, but also off on the field. And we're coming back home sometimes at 8:00 at night and on Friday nights like 12:00 at midnight and still maintaining a high GPA. Maintaining all A's in my class means a lot.'
'I feel very grateful to be able to receive this,' said Roberts. 'To be honest I was with you I was very shocked to be able to receive it at first. And, it's like, wow!'

Star of Gilmore Girls reminisces about playing baseball in Savannah

SAVANNAH, Ga. (WSAV) — Actor Scott Patterson, best known for playing Luke on 'Gilmore Girls,' will appear June 6 and 7 at Epic Cons: Savannah (June 6 through 8). He – along with dozens more stars of the big and small screens – will meet and interact with fans. Stars of the big and small screen coming to the Coastal Empire for Epic Cons: Savannah June 6-8 Patterson spoke with WSAV about the impact 'Gilmore Girls' has had on fans over the years. 'There's a lot of people that are just catching on to it and they've just discovered it recently. They say they just can't get enough of it. They fall asleep with it. They have it on while they're doing their housework or cooking. You know, it's amazing. Sometimes I meet four generations of the show's fans: the great-grandparents, the grandparents, the parents, the kids. They just don't make many shows like 'Gilmore Girls' anymore.' Patterson says he loves when fans will discuss specific episodes with him. It makes him realize how the show's themes and topics really resonated with viewers. 'When you realize that the details of this show really drill down with people and they carry it in their hearts? It's really amazing. Every encounter I have had with a 'Gilmore Girls' fan, whether it's in a restaurant, the gym, wherever I am, it's always very heartfelt and very sweet.' Patterson is looking forward to coming back to Savannah for the first time in more than 40 years for more than just the convention. Before he was an actor, he was professional baseball player. 'I was drafted by the Atlanta Braves in 1980. I started the season in Durham, North Carolina, in the Carolina League. And then halfway through the season, I was promoted to Savannah, Georgia, the Double-A affiliate of the Atlanta Braves at that time. And it was very exciting promotion, a very exciting time because I became a bona fide prospect. And I did very well in Savannah. It's a lovely place with lovely people. And I actually didn't want to leave. I mean, you want to be called up. But of all the minor league cities I've ever lived in, Savannah was always my favorite.' Hines-Allen confident in Jaguars' defensive turnaround

JACKSONVILLE, FL. (WSAV) — Joshua Hines-Allen was a strong presence at the second week of organized team activities (OTA) for the Jacksonville Jaguars. Hines-Allen's attendance at OTAs came as a surprise, the veteran usually opts out of the mandatory training sessions to train in Arizona. Last season, the Jaguars signed Hines-Allen to a monster 5-year contract worth over $140 million. In 2023, the linebacker had a breakout season. Hines-Allen had 17.5 sacks, which was tied for second most in the National Football League. 2024 saw some regression however, finishing the year with 8 total sacks. Nonetheless, he said he believes Jacksonville's defense can be a major asset this season. 'It's all about the work we put in every day,' he said. 'The communication that we have in the red zone, backed up situations, it all starts out here.' The Jaguars are set to take on the Carolina Panthers in week one of the NFL season on Sunday, Sep. 7 at 1:00 p.m. Copyright 2025 Nexstar Media, Inc. All rights reserved.
