Brits urged to visit beautiful country 'better' than Thailand with less tourists
While Thailand is experiencing a major tourist boom thanks to the 'White Lotus Effect', those wishing to avoid the crowds should consider visiting this equally stunning and exciting Southeast Asian gem
Favourable currency exchange rates, working holiday visas and television inspiration are all leading British travellers to plan big holidays outside the continent in 2025. According to new research from Reboot Online, one of the most searched-for flights of 2025 are flights to Thailand.
But with The White Lotus effect sending tourists to the country in droves and the current plan to slack the visa exemption period in half, you may want to explore alternative options. If you're looking to explore the beauty of Southeast Asia in person but without the keening crowds, consider a trip slightly further east.
The Philippines is more than just a destination dupe for Thailand, it has its own rich culture, cuisine and landscape to entice travellers. The country comprises over 7,000 islands with stunning coastal scenery and highly-rated hikes, as well as cheaper food prices than Thailand, according to Travel Authentic Asia.
The Philippines can be divided into three main sectors: Luzon, being the largest, northernmost island, which includes the capital of Manila; a group of islands called the Visayas, including the major islands like Panay, Samar, and Masbate; and Mindanao, the second-largest island in the Philippines, found at the southern end of the archipelago.
The country attracts nature-lovers with its diverse terrain of beaches, forests and mountains. White Beach, located in Boracay Island, is a top-rated attraction in the country. The white sand beach stretches for about 4 kilometres (2.5 miles) and has become a beloved destination for kitesurfing, sailing out on a paraw and sunbathing.
Boracay itself is a small island in the Visayas region, a central part of the Philippines. The palm tree-lined White Beach put the island on the map but according to one TripAdvisor user: 'Beaches are better in the Philippines than in Thailand, and it's not just Boracay."
Some other top-rated attractions in the country include El Nido Beach, Kayangan Lake, Puerto Princesa Underground River and Big Lagoon. Travelling between the Philippines' islands can add up cost wise though, so it's important to plan your trip well in advance.
Another popular tourist destination is the country's capital of Manila. Known as the 'Pearl of the Orient' the historic city is full of museums, parks, and restaurants to dive into the local culture.
The Philippines - Manila in particular - has become a hotspot for food-focused travellers. The capital is well known for its impressive cuisine and street food markets, like the Legazpi Sunday Market, Quiapo Market, and the country's very own Chinatown, Binondo.
Another popular spot is the capital city of the Davao region. Davao City is packed with attractions to entice travellers including the mountain resort Eden Nature Park and a nature theme park Malagos Garden Resort.
Mount Apo, the highest mountain in the Philippines, is also in Davao City. The trail up the over 9,000-foot dormant is no feat for regular hikers. To summit the peak you will need to prepare in advance and travel with a guide as the climb will take at least three days.
If you are swapping out Thailand for a trip to the Philippines, do keep in mind there is a difference in travel time. Flights between the UK and the Filipino capital of Manila are longer than travel to Bangkok, with flights from London taking approximately 16 hours.

Eerie video shows 'abandoned Center Parcs lodges' left to rot
A TikTok video has shown the eerie side of Center Parcs, with footage appearing to show a number of 'abandoned' lodges at a holiday park in the Netherlands left to rot with furniture still inside A TikTok user has left social media users bewildered with footage of what appears to be abandoned Center Parcs lodges in the Netherlands, still filled with furniture despite being overtaken by moss and mould. The video uploaded by VSnelson_author, shows neglected cabins at Center Parcs De Kempervennen near Eindhoven, igniting curiosity among viewers. Some of the dilapidated lodges were captured on camera raising eyebrows and questions in the comments, as one person asked, "Where's this? Didn't know there was a partially built Center Parcs". Others seemed keen to explore the ruins, with remarks such as "Where on site was this? Was there a few months ago would love to take a look." Amidst speculations, another commenter stated the obvious concern: "Hope your lodge didn't look like this." Despite the derelict scenes in the clip, De Kempervennen remains operational, offering stays from about £90 in July, and holding a decent 3.7-star rating on TripAdvisor. The dilapidation noted at De Kempervennen strikes a vivid contrast against the backdrop of exciting prospects for Center Parcs in the UK, with proposals for a new lavish resort in near Hawick, Scottish borders that could expand their portfolio since beginning UK operations in 1987. Center Parcs is planning to build around 700 lodges and tourist facilities, including its signature Subtropical Swimming Paradise and Aqua Sana Spa, conveniently located just off the A7. This area, south of Selkirk, is home to a variety of wildlife such as ospreys, golden eagles, red squirrels, and deer, and is near numerous historic houses, castles, and abbeys. The massive project, estimated to cost between £350 million and £400 million, is expected to create about 1,200 jobs and become the seventh UK Center Parcs site. This week, the travel giant held a two-day community consultation (from May 20-21) in Hawick to discuss the details with local residents. As reported by the BBC, there have been concerns raised over the potential loss of arable farmland. Some locals are also worried that tourists will visit the Center Parcs complex and then leave the area, providing little support to local businesses. However, the company, which is accepting feedback on the proposed site until Friday, June 6, insists that most of its weekend guests also 'explore' the local area. It has also released a fly-through video and 3D model to give locals a clear picture of what the holiday village would look like. Center Parcs has unveiled dazzling digital visions of its proposed new holiday village, complete with the brand's hallmark Subtropical Swimming Paradise, an expansive lake for watercraft hire, and options ranging from eateries to a spa secreted among lush woodlands. "The flythrough video and 3D model really help bring the plans to life and add to the real sense of anticipation that has been evident at recent consultation events," said Center Parcs' CEO Colin McKinlay. He further stressed their commitment to integrating local feedback into their blueprint. "It's one thing to describe what we're hoping to build, but seeing it laid out visually captures the ambition of what we're planning," Colin continued. If all goes to plan, Scots could be enjoying their very own Center Parcs paradise by 2029.

According to one person, Cheryl Louise, the mega discount retailer B&Q is selling a foldable trolley for just £29. The trolley, which weighs just a little over a stone, is perfect for storing all of your beach days essentials, towels, snacks, water - and more. Some thrifty customers have also stated that the foldable trolley is sturdy enough to carry their little ones around - of a maximum of 12.5 stone weight limit. The affordable B&Q bargain boasts an impressive 120l capacity, a strong steel frame, as well as anti-skid tyres. What's more, it can also be folded back together in just three seconds faff-free. So whether you're off to the beach, a camping site, want to organise a picnic or plan the ultimate caravan holiday for your family this summer, this B&Q bargain is sure to be a life-saver. Sharing the epic find on the popular Extreme Couponing and Bargains UK group, Cheryl wrote: ''£29 from B&Q! Will do us nicely for beach trips!'' 'We were gifted one and it's great' The post has clearly impressed many, as it's already racked up close to 215 likes in less than 24 hours. More than 300 social media users flooded to comments where they tagged their friends and family, with many raving about the summer must-have. Scotland's number one secret beach revealed One person said: ''We could do with this for caravan days at the beach.'' A mum chimed in: ''Thank you for sharing! This will be perfect for Disneyland Paris for when my two get tired and it's the cheapest I've ever seen them!'' A third only had rave reviews to share, writing: ''We was gifted one today and it's great!'' Why caravan holidays are so underrated CARAVAN park holidays are a British staple. And with the cost of living crisis wreaking havoc on Britain's purses, more of us are turning to them for an affordable break. Josie O'Brien, Senior Digital Writer on Fabulous, weighs in on why she thinks caravan holidays are seriously underrated... WHEN I was a child, my mum used to collect the £9.50 holiday vouchers in The Sun. She'd use them to book a couple of nights away at a caravan park during the school holidays. As an adult, I fully appreciate the convenience of a humble caravan holiday. No faffing about with passports, no luggage limits and no bog-standard hotel breakfast of stale toast and grey eggs. I still love caravan holidays as an adult. In a world of doing everything for the 'gram, a caravan park brings you back to basics. There's no obligation to get dressed up, no stress to fit a million picturesque excursions in one week and I don't find myself flustered in tourist hot spots like abroad. I love going to coastal caravan parks and strolling along the beach parade. My highlight is always fresh mussels, ice-creams and classic pubs to grab an afternoon tipple in. And then, of course, there's the cost. Staying in a caravan is definitely way cheaper than my international trips. With no expensive hotel bills and the ability to cook my own meals, I'm spending hundreds less than I would abroad. I've had some of my best and most relaxing holidays in caravans. Maybe I'll buy my own one day. A fellow shopper commented: ''We have one, we used for the beach, and do our big shop in it.'' ''What a cracking price,'' someone else couldn't believe the offer. More B&Q bargains to look for If you've decided to race to the local B&Q this week, there are also plenty of other buys to look for, such as this incredible £5 plant that will keep flowering until the first frost. Homeowners have also been loving a privacy fence that's easy to install - and will keep wandering eyes out of your garden for good. The much-loved retailer is also selling a ''lovely'' fire pit with BBQ grill that costs just £25 and will be perfect for garden parties.

Also called T5, the new terminal will welcome another 50million passengers when complete, adding to the current 90million at the airport. It will also allow flights to connect Singapore to 200 cities, up from the current 170 cities. The new terminal will be connected to Terminal 2, and will be the base of Singapore Airlines. Vertical gardens with indoor trees and plant areas will be throughout the terminal, which also has huge glass roofs and walls to let in as much daylight as possible. And a former military runway will become the airport's third runway used by commercial jets, and increased from 1.7miles to 2.5miles. Contactless touchpoints and automated check ins will speed up the process of travelling from landside to gate. The new designs have been created by British-based Heatherwick Studio, behind UK projects such at Coal Drops Yard and BT Tower in London. This is alongside American architecture firm KPF, behind Atlantis The Royal in Dubai and projects in Bermondsey and central London. Thomas Heatherwick, design director of Heatherwick Studio, said it will be full of "lush greenery and characterful districts that redefine what an airport can be". Inside the 'best airport in the world' following 3-year renovation - with 45ft 'waterfall,' indoor garden & robot bartender Work has already started on the 2,670 acre area, which will nearly double the current airport size. The new runway could open as soon as 2027, ahead of the full opening of the project. The terminal expects to fully open by the mid 2030s, costing around $10billion (£7.3bilion) according to Simple Flying. It's not the only major airport expansion taking place right now. Dubai is opening the new Al Maktoum International Airport by 2031, which will handle up to 260million passengers a year. This will replace the current Dubai International Airport - which welcomes 92million passengers - which will close when the new airport is completed.
