Shopping centre shooting a 'terrifying experience'
A shooting incident which took place in a County Carlow shopping centre was a "terrifying experience" for every person present, Gardaí (Irish police) have said.
Gardaí received multiple reports of shots being fired in Fairgreen Shopping Centre in Carlow town shortly after 18:15 local time on Sunday evening.
The suspect, a white Irish man in his 20s, is understood to have fired the shotgun a number of times as he walked through the centre.
He was then witnessed exiting the centre and was confronted by armed, plain clothed officers. He later died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
At a press conference on Monday, Assistant Commissioner Paula Hilman said no one was injured by the shots discharged, but a young girl suffered a minor leg injury after falling while running from the scene.
"This was meant to be a normal day out on a bank holiday weekend," she said.
"This was a terrifying experience for every person that was present in the Fairgreen Shopping Centre yesterday evening."
While armed gardaí identified themselves and drew their weapons, Ms Hilman said no officers discharged their weapon.
The man's body remains at the scene, and will be removed to the State Pathologist Office where formal identification will take place.
Ms Hilman said the deceased's family are "grieving the death of their loved one" and asked for privacy.
Gardaí have urged people not to share any footage of the incident on social media.
They have asked anyone who was at the shopping centre between 18:00 and 18:30 on Sunday to contact them.
Following the incident, gardaí found a bottle with an unknown substance on the deceased.
An army bomb disposal team from Cork arrived late on Sunday night, and declared the scene safe earlier on Monday.
The shopping centre and the car park remain cordoned off to the public.
Ms Hilman said gardaí continue to investigate all of the circumstances surrounding this "serious incident".
She paid tribute to the management and businesses within Fairgreen Shopping Centre, as well as the emergency services.
"I specifically want to highlight the response of local Garda members, who on receipt of a call of a very dangerous incident immediately responded to protect their community," she added.
"Their courage was exemplary."
She said that gardaí are aware of the impact this will have on the local community, and there will be work done to ensure it can "come to terms with this incident".
On Sunday, Taoiseach (Irish prime minister) Micheál Martin said he was "deeply shocked and saddened" at the incident.

'Much-loved' farmer Michael Gaine was 'kind and strong'
Mourners attending the funeral Mass of a County Kerry farmer, whose death is the subject of a murder inquiry, have heard he was a kind, strong man, who loved people, farming and animals. Michael Gaine, 56, had been missing for more than eight weeks when remains found on his farm, near Kenmare, were identified.. He was initially treated as a missing persons case before it was upgraded to a homicide. On Saturday the congregation was told by parish priest Fr George Hayes that the funeral was about recovering his dignity, as reported by Irish broadcaster RTÉ. "There were many questions but sometimes in life there were no answers," said Fr George Hayes. He said that the "dignity of Michael's life, and not the manner of Michael's death, that will abide in our hearts". Michael was someone who "loved much and was much loved," Fr Hayes said. In a tribute to his cousin, Eoghan Clarke, who spoke on behalf of the family said Mr Gaine was known for his "incredible work ethic, personality and humour, and was a loving son, sibling and uncle". He said Mr Gaine's "incredible" work ethic had been instilled in him by his parents. He said he and his wife Janice had a "truly beautiful relationship" and that they loved to be together, "from simple trips to the cinema in Killarney, visits to new restaurants, walks in the National Park, and adventurous holidays abroad". "Janice and Michael's sisters will know better than anyone that Michael had a soft, caring side. In Janice's own words, Michael was a true man. He was soft and loving, caring and affectionate, kind and considerate," said. "He was not afraid to show his emotions. He was also brave, fearless and strong. He was strong mentally and, as anyone who ever tried to follow him up the mountain in wellies will know, he was strong physically too". Mourners heard Mr Gaine was a keen rally driver. Over the past week his rallying friends had fixed up the Ford Escort Mark II he used to race and it was used to transport his ashes. Mr Gaine, a sheep and cattle farmer, was reported missing from his home near Kenmare on 21 March. He was last seen in the County Kerry town the previous day. He lived in the remote Carrig East area, close to the Molls Gap beauty spot, along the renowned Ring of Kerry. According to RTÉ, in-depth investigations by gardaí ruled out "innocent" explanations, such as a medical event, an accident, or that he left the area voluntarily. A missing person's investigation operates on the basis of consent, but when gardaí announced the re-classification of their investigation, it meant the range of options in front of the investigation team significantly increased. They could then get search warrants, clear areas of interest and seize and examine certain items like phones and laptops. Human tissue found in fields and in the farmyard at Mr Gaine's farm on 16 May was later confirmed to be his. His death is being treated as murder. A man in his 50s, who was arrested last Sunday on suspicion of Mr Gaine's murder, was later released without charge. He has denied any involvement in the farmer's disappearance. Boy fell to death after slip at Cliffs of Moher
A 12-year-old boy fell to his death at Ireland's Cliffs of Moher after slipping in a puddle close to the edge, an inquest has heard. Zhihan Zhao was with his mother and her friends at the beauty spot on the County Clare coast on 23 July last year when he walked ahead of the group. A French tourist who witnessed him fall told Clare Coroner's Court she saw him slip and try to pull himself up by grasping at grass, before he disappeared over the edge. The coroner embraced Zhihan's distraught mother after recording a verdict of accidental death. Zhihan and his mother, Xianhong Huang, both Chinese nationals, had arrived in Ireland 12 days before his fatal fall. In her deposition, Ms Huang said that Zhihan was walking ahead of her on the Cliffs of Moher trail and she lost sight of him. "My son walked very fast and was ahead of us by 50 metres," she said. "As there was only one path, I thought we would meet him along the way. "When I didn't, I walked to the visitor centre and I checked the visitor centre." Unable to find him at the visitor centre, she returned to the path to search for him and when there was no sign of him, she reported him missing. Ms Huang said she last saw Zhihan at 13:00 that day and the court heard she provided gardaí (Irish police) with a photo of him she had taken earlier on the trail. Speaking through an interpreter at the inquest in Kilrush, County Clare, Ms Huang, wiping away tears, asked: "What exactly caused Zhihan to fall from the cliffs?" Clare County Coroner Isobel O'Dea told the grieving mother that the evidence of an eyewitness would help answer that question. French tourist, Marion Tourgon, told the inquest she witnessed Zhihan falling over the edge at about 13:45 that day. Ms Tourgon explained she was at the edge of the cliffs with her husband and two children and they were taking a selfie at the time. She describing seeing a young Asian boy, who was alone, come into view. "I saw him slipping in the puddle that appears in the photo that my husband sent to the police," the witness said. "His right foot slipped into the puddle, with him trying to stop himself from falling with his left foot but his left foot ended up in the air." Ms Tourgon added: "It was very quick - he found himself in an awkward position with his left foot in a void over the cliff and his right knee on the edge of the cliff." She continued: "His right knee eventually fell into the void over the cliff and he was trying to grasp the grass with his hands to pull himself up. "He didn't shout and there was no noise." The Tourgon family then phoned the emergency services. An air, land and sea search operation began involving the Irish Coast Guard, gardaí, and Irish civil defence volunteers who used boats, drones, divers and a helicopter. A police witness, Garda Colm Collins, told the inquest he received a call at 14:00 that day after a male was seen falling off the edge of the Cliffs of Moher. He said that the Irish Coast Guard had spotted a body floating in the water at the base of the cliffs. The court heard a lifeboat was launched but it was was not able to access the site where the body was spotted due to the sea conditions. It was another five days before Zhihan's body was eventually recovered from the sea. The boy was found by a fisherman, Matthew O'Halloran, from Corofin, County Clare. He spotted a body facedown and arms extended in the water between Doolin and the Aran Islands shortly after 10:00 local time on 28 July 2024. Mr O'Halloran alerted the Irish Coast Guard and its members retrieved Zhihan's body and brought it ashore at Doolin. The coroner said post-mortem results had confirmed that Zhihan died from multiple traumatic injuries consistent with a fall from a height. "It is clear from evidence we heard that Zhihan slipped off the cliffs rather than any other way. His death would have been very quick - instantaneous." Addressing the boy's mother, she said: "I can't imagine how upsetting this is for you." Ms O'Dea also extended her sympathies to Zhihan's father who was not present at the inquest. She embraced Ms Huang as she left the coroner's court. The accident was the second fatal fall at the Cliffs of Moher within a three-month period last year. In May 2024, a student in her 20s lost her footing while walking with friends and fell to her death. Since August last year, large sections of the Cliffs of Moher trail have been closed due to safety concerns. At the time, the Clare Local Development Company confirmed that it was taking the action following the two fatal accidents.
